Fit & Factory Deductions
Recommendations
- Measure carefully, including diagonally from corner to corner. If your window is out of square by more than 1/2", consider an outside mount for a better fit.
- Inside mount shutters may limit access to tilt-in windows. Outside mount is recommended for easier operation and to reduce light gaps.
- Inside mount frames include small factory deductions for proper fit, while outside mount shutters are made to your exact measurements.
- Larger shutters may require dividing rails for added stability, and panel sizes are limited—wider windows require multiple panels.
- Shutters may require some assembly, and pre-drilled holes help ensure a smooth, accurate installation.
Good to Know
- L-Frame shutters made 1/8" smaller than ordered width and height on an inside mount.
- Bullnose & T-Frame shutters made 3/8" smaller than ordered width and height with no sill, and 1/4" smaller than ordered height with sill frame selected on an inside mount.
- Deductions may vary +/- 1/8".
- Cover strips may be available for L-Frame shutters upon request, for light gap coverage.
- 36" maximum width for single panel.
- For panels over 66 inches in height, a dividing rail is required. For bi-folding panels over 50 inches in height, a dividing rail is required.
- Pre-drilled installation holes are strategically placed on all frames for accurate, quick and clean installation. Some assembly is required.
- No Frame Sides shutters using Mounting Strips will not come with pre-drilled holes.
- No Frame Sides shutters will arrive with panels and attached hinges only. Due to the weight of shutter, No Frame is not recommended for larger sizes to ensure a sturdy mount.
Inside Mount Instructions
To ensure an inside mount will work for your window, start by checking that you have enough mounting depth. You can find the exact requirements under the “Specifications” tab on the product page of the item you are considering.
Measuring the Width
- Measure the exact width (left to right) of the inside edge of the window frame in three places (top, middle, and bottom)
- Record the smallest width of the three measurements
- For 1/16” or 1/32” increments, round down to the nearest 1/8”. (For example, if the smallest measurement is 24 9/16," round down to 24 1/2". If it's 24 3/8", no need to round down.)
- This is the width you will order
Measuring the Height
- Measure the exact height (top to bottom) of the window opening in three places (left, center, right)
- Record the smallest height of the three measurements
- For increments of 1/16” or 1/32”, round down to the nearest 1/8”. (For example, if the smallest measurement is 24 9/16," round down to 24 1/2". If it's 24 3/8", no need to round down.)
- This will be the height you will order
Outside Mount Instructions
To get the right fit, you’ll need to account for a few extra measurements when placing your order. Below are our recommended outside mount additions to ensure your shutter fits around your window.

Measuring the Width
- Measure the exact width (left to right) of the inside edge of the window frame in 3 places (top, middle, and bottom)

Measuring Tips
- Use a steel measuring tape
- If you get a 1/16" or 1/32" increment for width, round down to the nearest 1/8"
- If you get a 1/16" or 1/32" increment for height, round up to the nearest 1/8"
- SelectBlinds applies all necessary deductions; do not adjust width.
- Measuring for shutters is very important and can be overwhelming. We recommend giving one of our shutter experts a call at 888-257-1840 to help guide you though the process and ensure a smooth ordering experience.
- To avoid light gaps around the frame, consider ordering an outside mount frame.
- When ordering outside mount shutters, please ensure you read our Measure & Install tab to ensure you are entering the correct measurements for your shutters.
- Shutters over 62" in height need to have a dividing rail.
- Specify the dividing rail location by providing the distance from the bottom of the shutter to the mid point of where the dividing rail will go.
- Dividing rail position will vary slightly depending on louver size. 3" louvers will vary up to 1 1/4" from the specified position, and 4" louvers will vary by up to 1 3/4".
- To avoid excess louver overlap, a minimum of 16" is required between divider rail and the top/bottom rail of the shutter.
- When ordering adjacent shutters in the same room, to achieve a uniform appearance you must specify that all adjacent shutters and their divider rails be the same height.
