Other than a very thin bit of light coming down both sides (which would be unavoidable with any type of shade), even in the middle of the day the rooms are very dark. Pitch black at night. Although some are harder to pull down than others (we got the no strings type) and one has some wrinkles in the fabric, I would absolutely recommend them.
