Inspiring Decorator: Audrey Sprinkle of The Black House on the Corner

Audrey sprinkle sits on leather couch in front of paintings of women

Welcome back for another designer spotlight from one of our favorite Instagram innovators! This time, we’re going dark with The Black House on the Corner, and we mean that in the best way possible! Audrey uses a collection of darker hues in her 1900 Greek Revival Craftsman, bringing out the beauty in the design of her home by collating the moody shades with a pop of bright white and custom themes that give every room it’s own bold personality.

Audrey sat down with us to shed some light on her home, style and what motivates her and her husband after years of designing and flipping houses. Here’s what our newest Inspiring Decorator had to say.

1. What inspired you to become a decorator? What has your journey been like?

I have been into home design and decor since I was a kid! I was 10 when I designed my first piece of furniture and had my dad (against his will) execute it.

It’s been an exciting journey. We took a leap of faith about nine years ago to start flipping homes and it paid off in a big way. My husband and I work — mostly — really well together and the experience of re-building and designing spaces together has definitely strengthened our relationship!

2. How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Definitely eclectic vintage modern. I find myself attracted to strange decor items but mid-century modern furniture!

Eclectic vintage modern decor in dining room

3. What was your favorite project(s)? Why?

Probably my painted wallpaper in our hallway! It was free and a huge transformation. I also didn’t expect much out of it so when it turned out so great, that made it even better! (Check out how cool this is!)

4. What’s your favorite trend right now?

I love seeing more personality come back into design. The all-white and farmhouse aesthetics are on their way out and that excites me because they’re kind of boring!

5. What inspired you to paint your walls black?

I love moody, dark colors and since we have 12’ ceilings and tons of windows, I figured I could get away with it!

We really love Classic Shoreline Cordless Woven Woods and get so many compliments on them! My favorite feature is the cordless option. Having four rambunctious boys, it gives me peace of mind that no one is going to choke on blind cords!

High Ceilings Highlight Select Blinds Layered with Curtains

We’re currently working on a huge master suite renovation. My husband’s “day job” is with a European company, which means he starts work at 3 a.m. our time. He’s in bed by 7 p.m. and it’s still pretty light outside the majority of the year, so I’m most excited to try out the Select Blinds woven woods with a blackout liner feature for our bedroom windows!
We can’t wait to see what Audrey does with our blackout-lined woven wood shades, can you? Until then, it’s a wrap on our Inspiring Decorator: Black House Edition! If you enjoyed this post, be sure to follow The Black House on the Corner on Instagram! Audrey has plenty more projects, insight and style to love coming in the future!

Why Wood Still Wows in Interior Design

Since the Stone Age, wood has been the go-to construction material for builders and designers. Compared to steel and concrete, writes Clay Risen of Popular Science, it’s “cheaper, easier to assemble, and more fire resistant, thanks to the way wood chars [who knew??]. It’s also more sustainable. Wood is renewable like any crop, and it’s a carbon sink, sequestering the carbon dioxide it absorbed during growth even after it’s been turned into lumber.”

More simply put, because wood used to be a living organism, it contains a spiritual energy that affects us in a positive way and helps create a relaxing environment. (Don’t believe me? Search “forest bathing” to learn about the benefits of walking through a forest of trees.)

Wood’s Zen-like presence can be found everywhere in interior design. Its natural organic properties make it one of the most versatile elements evident in all good design, and a simple way to bring nature to every room of your home.

The root of great design

In addition to its soothing effects on your senses, wood is one of the only materials that can be finished to look like shiny marble, or in almost any way you can imagine. There are lots of techniques for texturizing, smoothing, painting and staining wood to give it the look you want. Or left in its natural state, wood can be crafted into truly gorgeous, one-of-a-kind designs that showcase its unique imperfections, knots and grains.

Wood can be used virtually everywhere – inside and out – as a design element to complement any style. In addition to the durable, classic beauty of fine wood furniture, envision it on your floors, walls, ceilings, patios and in accessories throughout your home.

‘Woodn’t’ this look spectacular hanging in your home? You can see why Pinterest users have pinned this gorgeous wooden pendant light to so many lists.

Nail any décor from country to contemporary, traditional to transitional by mixing and matching wood finishes. Sustain your look for years with reclaimed and refinished wood used in doors, windows, flooring, ceiling beams, and as a decorative accent almost anywhere.

Can’t afford to re-floor with wood? Reach for it on your windows with natural woven wood coverings (like our new Veronica Valencia Island Woven Wood in luscious Lomaloma), or real-wood blinds like our 2” Select American Hardwoods (shown here in Old Mahogany).

Putting the ‘BAM’ in Bamboo: 5 FAQs About Bamboo Blinds

For more than 5,000 years, the panda-friendly bamboo plant has endured as one of the most durable, dramatic and exotic materials for interior design. Favored by high-end and DIY designers alike, bamboo and woven wood window coverings add a sense of zen and a dash of adventure to almost any decor. But before venturing into the bamboo forest, here are a few ‘FAQs’ you should know about these beautifully versatile window treatments.

1. What’s the difference between natural bamboo and woven wood blinds or shades?

Besides bamboo being edible (well, as far as pandas are concerned), bamboo window treatments are made from the natural fibers of the bamboo plant. Woven wood treatments are made from a combination of bamboo, rattan, jute, grasses and reeds to create a variety of color options. Speaking of color, good to know that seasons can change the color of these natural reeds, grasses, etc. If you’re doing more than one window, we recommend ordering or purchasing all of the blinds you’ll need for the same room at the same time to avoid possible dye lot changes.

The beauty of classic bamboo can brighten any room. Here’s a sample window treatment using our Signature Shoreline Woven Woods.

The multiple fibers that make up woven wood window treatments add a touch of texture and adventure. Here’s a sample of our Premier Cordless Woven Woods with the classic Roman style fold.

2. Are bamboo window treatments waterproof?

Bamboo thrives naturally in wet, tropical environments, so a little rain isn’t going to hurt. That’s why they’re a great option for the patio and other exterior spaces.

3. Do bamboo shades provide enough privacy?

While the texture and weave of bamboo window coverings allow for some filtered light to come through naturally, you can easily control any ‘see through’ by simply adding a privacy or blackout liner. Window panels or drapes can also be used with these versatile shades to minimize views from the outside while creating a truly custom look on the inside.

4. Can I go cordless with bamboo?

Absolutely. The biggest trend in blinds is cordless operation, a feature you can also get with bamboo and woven wood coverings (as well as corded, if you prefer). Easily raise and lower them with a simple pull ring tucked discreetly in the bottom rail. Cordless lift also eliminates any possible ‘catching’ of traditional cords on the naturally rougher edges of these products.

5. Is bamboo a smart design choice?

Still on trend after all these years (bamboo was first used as the décor du jour in China 5,000 years ago), bamboo window treatments remain a constant go-to in the stable of many designers for many reasons:

  • Today’s hottest design trends call for natural textures, making bamboo a natural choice.
  • They’re versatile enough to complement almost any decor and available in a variety of colors.
  • Made from exotic, natural, eco friendly materials, they provide durable, long-lasting beauty.
