Inspiring Decorator: Autumn Stauffer of Steel City Farmhouse

Picture perfect in Pennsylvania, Autumn Stauffer of Steel City Farmhouse puts a modern spin on a vintage style by creating a home that’s a culmination of old and new. She is frequently writing her home’s story, expertly crafting the contents and chapters in “Pursuit of a Pretty Home in Pittsburgh”.

We recently collaborated with her for a huge window shades project, and were so interested in her designer style that we asked her to be our next Inspiring Decorator! So grab a sammich from Primanti Bro’s and read our interview with Autumn below!

Meet Autumn of Steel City Farmhouse!

1. How would you explain your style and aesthetic?

When designing our home, we wanted a retreat, a gathering point, and a space that inspired our passions. That has slowly unfolded into a timeless yet clean eclectic style as we design and decorate our newly built home. I love a blend of old and new, pieces that tell the story of time mixed against the backdrop of a newly constructed home. This, for me, is what has given our home some soul.

2. Where/Who do you get your home inspiration from?

Most recently I was very inspired by rummaging through my grandmother’s attic. While she is no longer with us, I love incorporating meaningful treasures that remind me of her into our home. Think beautiful sea glass jugs, designer vintage rattan chairs, and intricately designed dishware. It has given a nice balance of old in a new home.

Traveling the world has also served as a huge point of inspiration for my designs and perhaps why my style is a bit eclectic. And this is why you’ll see a side of travel on my predominantly home blog

SelectBlinds.com's Roman Shades lend to the clean and sleek look!

3. What personal project are you proudest of and why?

Right now, my head is still in the clouds on the completion of our custom built home. It was something we dreamed of doing, and it was such a special experience to be able to design our home and build top to bottom what works and serves our lifestyle best.

Welcome to Autumn's custom home!

4. What’s your favorite trend right now?

I love how color and pattern is making a bold, new come back. For me, I want to be wrapped in a happy, cheerful space so I’ve been finding ways to pack a little punch throughout whether it’s the backsplash, wallpaper, rugs or furniture.

Just as in our lives we are all multi-tasking and juggling all of life’s little demands, we need our homes to do the same. I love how more and more the expectation is for a space to flex and be multi-functioning. Doubling benches as storage, or transforming what would normally be a home office into a multi-purpose room all through the design and layout of furniture. This reflects a major shift in how people want usable spaces for their families.

Bold colors and a subtle pattern make a great marriage.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn more about interior design/decorating?

Let’s learn together! By day and trade I work in Corporate America in business. Unlike others I can’t sit here and tell you I’ve been doing this for a decade. It’s something I stumbled upon and realized I loved after I got my first place. I guess my best advice is to experiment on your own home/space or take some pro bono projects to build your portfolio (queue mom and dad, or friends.)

Barn door fit into many different kinds of decor!

Thanks so much for letting us take a closer look at your home, Autumn! We love learning a little more about all of our influencers and hope to work with you again in the future! If you love the window treatments in Steel City Farmhouse, here’s a couple links to the products in this post:

“It was top of my list to get a quote or two for blinds, and we knew it would be expensive but never did we think our quotes would come back between $12-15k for 22 windows. And then I found Select Blinds.”

Happy Customer, Kim S., Recommends Select Blinds for the Office

Kim S. used our Classic Cordless Blackout Shades to cut down on glare and cool off the new office of CeramFab Inc. , a ceramic fibers company that sells products like blankets, bricks, paper sheets, etc., used in high temp furnaces and areas requiring high temp/flame resistant protection.

” We are very happy that we chose to go with SelectBlinds.com for our office window blinds. I was having a hard time finding blackout shades that would fit our windows because they’re a little outside standard measurements, but these were easy to order and the color selection was fantastic. We needed blackout shades that could keep the glare off of the computer screens in the offices and darken the conference room enough for a projector, and the Classic Cordless Blackout Shades (Wirecutter’s Top Pick for Blackout Shades in 2019) work great. We received our order in less than two weeks from the date of order. The shades were very easy to install. Two people put up 10 shades in about one hour. I would absolutely recommend these shades to anyone looking for window blinds.”

Happy Customer Greg K. Doubles Down with Woven & Faux Wood Blinds

Woven Wood Shades from Select Blinds fit on doors and windows

So many details in buying a house and making it a home! Meet our Happy Customer Greg K, who made our day when he told us, “My wife and I were searching to find window coverings for a new house addition we had just completed. My wife came across SelectBlinds which had exactly what we were looking for at a competitive price point. The entire order came very quickly and was super simple to install. Below are a few pictures of the installed blinds which look great.”

For the Master Suite, Greg and his wife chose SelectBlinds.com Designer Series Woven Wood Shades in Nassau to add texture and dimension to this beautiful space. They also added blackout liners to help them get a good night’s sleep. Adding blackout liners is a great choice, too, for areas where you want to keep the glare off TVs. They also help block the heat in the summer and keep out the cold out in the winter.

For their little man’s creative playroom, they chose 2″ Designer Faux Wood Blinds in Pearl White and added the decorative edge binding in Coconut to cover the small route holes and cording. Not only does this feature add functionality by adding privacy and blocking light, it also creates a high-end designer look! We hope he loves it as much as we do!

See Why Happy Customer Jo Ann Refers Her Friends to Select Blinds

Select Blinds customer pairs floor length curtains with grey roller shades

Have you ever created the perfect looking room? How about the perfect looking window?

With windows, the trick is finding coverings that both look good and provide privacy. And when we say “look good” we mean not just in the window, but as part of the room itself. Sometimes it all just comes together, with the perfect coverings combining with everything else to form a setting that just seems…right.

For Jo Ann A., that’s just how things are in her dining room.

Jo Ann entered our contest for a chance to win a $250 Visa gift card (join our Happy Customer Program) with photos of her Select Room Darkening Roller Shades with Cassette. As you can see from the pictures, they certainly look good in her dining room.

We liked Jo Ann’s photos so much, in fact, we decided to learn a little more about what went into choosing them.

First, we wondered why she went with the Select Room Darkening Roller Shades with Cassette.

“I wanted that type of window covering because when the sun sets it was that side of my house and it gets hot. Also, I want to have a privacy because ever since Hurricane Michael hit us last October, we had some damage and until now we had no fences and I don’t want my neighbors or strangers seeing us eating and seeing whats inside my house.”Happy customer pairs Select Blinds grey roller shades and custom drapery

That makes a lot of sense. Room Darkening shades provide an amazing amount of privacy, and they will help keep rooms cooler by keeping them darker. Those are both great qualities, but we wanted to know what Jo Ann likes best about her shades. She said she appreciates how easy they are to roll up or down, but that’s not all.

“I loved them especially with cassette they look awesome and it looks great in my windows. I’m in love with it and even my husband is enjoying it and fell in love with it too! I’ve never before felt so excited to be in that room every day just to look at it.”

How great is that? The shades have become a focal point for Jo Ann.  As an industry leader in making window treatments safe for kids, we are also excited over her choosing a cordless option.  The shades and drapes go together so nicely, which makes sense since Jo Ann said her love for the shades led to getting new curtains.

“I had an old light-colored curtains but when I tried it on it just doesn’t look awesome so I have to go find curtains that would look great with my new roller shades and I got a lot of compliments from my friends/family and they even asked where I got my shades and gave them your website.”

(Note: Check out our selection of curtains here.)

We totally get how getting some sweet new shades could send you down the rabbit hole of needing more new stuff to bring out the best in them. It turns out that the shades have helped to bring the best out of Jo Ann’s home and she couldn’t be happier about her experience.

“All I can say is you all did a great job.  You all make sure that customers are very satisfied and happy. My first experience having a roller shade is way above my expectations and they make my house look great❤❤❤ (editor’s note: the hearts were Jo Ann’s).

“Thank you very much for making my room/house look great again and I’m thinking of replacing all the blinds in the rest of my house soon. You all did a great and awesome job!”

We appreciate that, Jo Ann, but the real credit goes to you. Great choice and we can’t wait to see what you do next!

Wait till You See This NASCAR Fan’s Monster Collection!

Ultimate NASCAR fan shows huge collection in basement man cave

This is just one of two rooms NASCAR super fan Glenn Zabransky and his father have transformed into living shrines to the sport. From die-cast mini car replicas to actual full-size tires and car hoods, their monster collection of all-things NASCAR numbers in the thousands. Photos courtesy of Glenn Zabransky

Glenn Zabransky lives and breathes NASCAR. And we mean LIVES. AND. BREATHES. IT.

Just take a look at the formidable collection he and his father have amassed over the last 28 years since Glenn saw his first race at Pocono Raceway (now a super speedway) in Pennsylvania, when he was just five years old. Hard to believe he could squeeze anything else in, but we were pretty honored that one of his most recent additions were two #38 SelectBlinds.com Ford Mustang hero cards autographed by driver David Ragan with Front Row Motorsports.

Signed David Ragan #38 Nascar Hero Card with SelectBlinds.com Gear and Wrap NASCAR action photo signed by driver David Ragan in Select Blinds car

With a passion for the sport passed down by his grandfather and father, Glenn, who hails from New Jersey when he’s not traveling the country from track to track during race season, started collecting die-cast cars as a kid. His dad, he says, would order a 1/64 scale car for him for every 1/24 his dad ordered, most of which were replicas of Dale Earnhardt Sr. cars (his dad’s favorite driver). The first thing Glenn bought on his own was a Terry Labonte Corn Flakes replica for $10,  snagged at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1996. The collection truly started, though, he says, with a set of 1/24 scale Richard Petty cars from Franklin Mint.

“We have more than five hundred 1/24 scale cars, as well as a few hundred smaller cars.  In recent years we’ve expanded to sheet metal and other pieces of cars from actual races,” Glenn says. “I think I have ten or so pieces of metal (fenders, bumpers, trunk lids, etc.), about eight tires including a Dale Sr. 1994 Daytona 500 tire, as well as other odds and ends like valve covers and rims.”

The collection also includes  “odd-ball pieces like Davey Allison chili and Dale Sr. suntan lotion” Glenn says his mom has contributed.

His most prized items?

“We were able to obtain the actual seats my dad and I sat in at our first Daytona 500,” he says after the famed World Center of Racing underwent a remodel several years ago.

Now that’s cool!

No matter how cool his collection is, though, for Glenn, the coolest thing is that racing is a real family affair.

“The bond that racing has formed between my father and I is something that I’ll always be grateful for,” he shares, “and while my mom doesn’t really follow or care for the lower series, she’s probably been to at least 60 cup races or so.

“My wife knew when dating me that if she ever wanted to see me, she would have to  put up with the NASCAR aspect,” Glenn continues. “Turns out she’s super into it now. She even participates in my fantasy NASCAR league. The fact that she’s so on board and into it makes it even better.”

His now brother- and sister-in-law have also gotten into the sport. Together, the family has traveled to most of the tracks (Indianapolis Motor Speedway, surprisingly, is one pit stop still on Glenn’s bucket list), meeting every NASCAR driver at least once, including favorites Austin and Ty Dillon.

“Actually met them both and their dad, Mike, at Volusia County dirt track during speed week. My wife had on a few-years-old Austin Dillon dirt hoodie and was too nervous to ask Austin for a photo, so I asked and he was happy to do so. He knew we were pretty big fans.  Mike even offered us a beer.”

They also met Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace that night, both of whom had beer to share, too.

“That was a fun night,” recalls Glenn with a laugh, adding that he’s also been impressed meeting Jimmy Johnson and “even” Kyle Busch. “It’s a great thing with NASCAR. You have the ability to interact with the drivers during the event, not just at some sports store signing autographs.”

NASCAR fan's black dog wearing blue #88 scarf at racetrack

The Zabransky family includes three, four-legged members, including Ralph, who was named after Dale Earnhardt Sr’s. father and racing patriarch Ralph Earnhardt.

It’s not just the drivers he loves; it’s the fans he meets, too.

“I love talking about [NASCAR] with other people, trying to ‘recruit’ new fans, and just every aspect of the sport,” he says.  To help in his recruiting efforts, he often gives away duplicate die-cast cars to young fans.

“I was lucky enough to attend a ton of races and have a dad that also collected. Those first cars that a young fan gets can shape their fandom for years to come. ”

He loves sharing stories of his most memorable races, too. His favorite? The 2001 MBNA Cal Ripken Jr. 400  at Dover Downs International Speedway following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Glenn’s uncle, who had worked in the Twin Towers at the time, was with Glenn and his dad for the race. Glenn’s favorite driver then was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won that day and after, went around the track with an American flag hanging out the window.

“An image,” reminisces Glenn, “that’s burned in  my memory. I’ll never forget it.”

Join Glenn this Memorial Day weekend and watch the No. 38 SelectBlinds.com Ford
Mustang and David Ragan recognize Corporal William G. Taylor
of the United States Marine Corps, who was killed in the line of duty while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Twenty-six-year-old Cpl. Taylor of Macon, GA, was killed on Nov.
30, 2005 by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Fallujah, Iraq.

Taylor’s name will be displayed on the windshield of Ragan’s SelectBlinds.com Ford for the Coca-Cola 600 on May 26, where the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will pay tribute to the fallen men and women of the U.S. military. Ragan’s car will also feature a red, white and blue patriotic paint scheme as part of NASCAR’s tribute.

Inspiring Decorator: Audrey Sprinkle of The Black House on the Corner

Audrey sprinkle sits on leather couch in front of paintings of women

Welcome back for another designer spotlight from one of our favorite Instagram innovators! This time, we’re going dark with The Black House on the Corner, and we mean that in the best way possible! Audrey uses a collection of darker hues in her 1900 Greek Revival Craftsman, bringing out the beauty in the design of her home by collating the moody shades with a pop of bright white and custom themes that give every room it’s own bold personality.

Audrey sat down with us to shed some light on her home, style and what motivates her and her husband after years of designing and flipping houses. Here’s what our newest Inspiring Decorator had to say.

1. What inspired you to become a decorator? What has your journey been like?

I have been into home design and decor since I was a kid! I was 10 when I designed my first piece of furniture and had my dad (against his will) execute it.

It’s been an exciting journey. We took a leap of faith about nine years ago to start flipping homes and it paid off in a big way. My husband and I work — mostly — really well together and the experience of re-building and designing spaces together has definitely strengthened our relationship!

2. How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Definitely eclectic vintage modern. I find myself attracted to strange decor items but mid-century modern furniture!

Eclectic vintage modern decor in dining room

3. What was your favorite project(s)? Why?

Probably my painted wallpaper in our hallway! It was free and a huge transformation. I also didn’t expect much out of it so when it turned out so great, that made it even better! (Check out how cool this is!)

4. What’s your favorite trend right now?

I love seeing more personality come back into design. The all-white and farmhouse aesthetics are on their way out and that excites me because they’re kind of boring!

Flowery Backsplash in Vintage Modern Kitchen with Blinds Over Sink

5. What inspired you to paint your walls black?

I love moody, dark colors and since we have 12’ ceilings and tons of windows, I figured I could get away with it!

We really love Classic Shoreline Cordless Woven Woods and get so many compliments on them! My favorite feature is the cordless option. Having four rambunctious boys, it gives me peace of mind that no one is going to choke on blind cords!

High Ceilings Highlight Select Blinds Layered with Curtains

We’re currently working on a huge master suite renovation. My husband’s “day job” is with a European company, which means he starts work at 3 a.m. our time. He’s in bed by 7 p.m. and it’s still pretty light outside the majority of the year, so I’m most excited to try out the Select Blinds woven woods with a blackout liner feature for our bedroom windows!
We can’t wait to see what Audrey does with our blackout-lined woven wood shades, can you? Until then, it’s a wrap on our Inspiring Decorator: Black House Edition! If you enjoyed this post, be sure to follow The Black House on the Corner on Instagram! Audrey has plenty more projects, insight and style to love coming in the future!

For J. Finlay’s Roman Shades, Motorization Is Key

White Select Blinds motorized roman shades under custom cornice

One of the best parts about our industry is seeing what people are able to do with the window treatments they order. While we are certainly aware of what each of our products can do, seeing them in action is truly something else.

And when our customers are proud to show off their rooms with some freshly-installed window treatments, we want to make sure they get that chance. Becoming a “Happy Customer” is how you get entered into a contest to win a $250 Visa gift card.

Not surprisingly there are plenty of entries (we are the highest-rated and most-reviewed window fashions company in the world, after all), but looking through them one thing we’ve learned from our Happy Customers is that there is no one style or color that makes them, well, happy. Every room requires something a little different, and we’d like to know more about what went into creating each unique look.

The best way to find out is to ask, which is what we’re doing here.

So welcome to one of our newest Happy Customers, J. Finlay, who ordered Classic Roman Shades in the Simply White color

J. told us the shades arrived sooner than expected and were easy to install, while the upgraded motorization is a hit.

Long Wood Dining Room Table Under White Roman Shades

We’re certainly glad she’s happy, but why go with the Roman Shades in the first place?

“I decided to order my Roman Shades from Select Blinds because of the price, quality, and choice of colors.  I wanted white so it would match our window trim/crown molding and wanted a more contemporary look, so I chose the flat fold option to replace my heavy blinds.

“Since my window faces west, it was a difficult decision whether to go with blackout shades or light filtering.  I chose the light filtering, and as you can see in the third picture (below), it works beautifully partially down with bright sunlight shining.  Choosing the motorized remote was also a factor in choosing this shade.”

It is great to know that installation was easy, as we’re sure you couldn’t wait to start using your new shades. Now that they have been up for a bit, what do you like best about them?

“With the motorized remote, I can easily raise or lower this shade to allow more light into the room, and lower it when the sun is on the west side of the house.  My cats can now sit on the window ledge and look out at the world on that sides of the house, and when it’s colder, they love to lay on the floor where the sun shines in.

“Since they are white, I did spray the front of the shade with fabric protector spray, and used a UV spray on the back of the fabric since Florida sun is brutal.”

Dining Room with Area Rug with White Roman Shades from Select Blinds

Of course we want the cats to be happy, and it’s good that both you and your feline friends are enjoying what the shades have to offer. It’s clear why you are a fan of your Roman Shades, but is there anything else you’d like for us to know?

“I will definitely consider replacing another blind in my house with a Roman Shade from Select Blinds.  Detailed measuring instructions and online videos really helped when placing my order.”

That’s what we like to hear, both for shopping with us again and being helped by the instructions.  We for sure understand why some would be hesitant to do this all on their own, but we’re glad you found out how simple the process can be. From a look at the photos, it’s easy to see why you’re a fan!

Sharon A. Upgrades from Aluminum to Select Blinds’ Honeycomb/Cellular Shades

Drapery over White Pleated Shades from SelectBlinds

Here at SelectBlinds.com we pride ourselves on how you feel about us. After all, there’s a reason we love to highlight the fact that we are the highest-rated and most-reviewed window fashions company in the world!

We really enjoy helping people improve their rooms and lives with custom window shades at an affordable price. We can’t help but smile when customers share their excitement with us, and of course becoming a “Happy Customer” is how you get entered into a contest to win a $250 Visa gift card.

(Tap or click here to learn more about that)

But beyond the contest, we really like to know why people not only chose their window coverings, but also what they like best. The best way to find out is to, well, ask, which is what we’re doing here.

So say “Hello” to Sharon Almstrom, who ordered two Select 1″ Blackout Pleated Shades and three Select Double Cell Blackout Shades from us in February 2019.

Sharon told us she was “definitely happy” with the purchases, adding that there were already nice coverings in some of the rooms of her house but that it was time to upgrade the bedrooms “to be as  nice too!”

We asked Sharon to elaborate a bit on her experience with Select Blinds, here’s what she had to say:

Why did you decide to order these window coverings?

“For the master bedroom we knew we needed blackout but wanted something kind of classy looking. Our living room already had 1” pleated light filtering shades and we really liked those. So after ordering a few color samples of the blackout pleated shades, we picked a simple white that will go with everything.

“In our children’s rooms, when we first moved in, all three of the windows had broken mini blinds. We only had one child at the time though. We quickly ran out to a big box store and for about $50 bought some single cell blackout shades. They were okay but a little narrow for the window and hung crooked, even though they were installed straight at the top.

“So when the second child was born and we needed a new shade for her room, we decided to change the older child’s shades to a better version at the same time. So both of their rooms got blackout double cell shades. It’s amazing how dark it is in their rooms now for midday naps!”

Before and After Using SelectBlinds.com

Our blackouts are great at helping the little ones sleep. How about the installation process?

“Installation was pretty easy. Maybe 10-15 minutes per window. Checked to see that all parts were present and would fit and then it was just a matter or measuring and installing!

“The hardest part was not being mad at the extra holes from the previous owner’s lazy installation of cheap window treatments.”

White Honeycomb Shades with Purple Floral Valance and Wall Paint

Our coverings sure do block the perfect amount of light. So, now that they are a part of your home, what do you like best about them?

“The new shades look very nice, crisp, sophisticated. This is a relatively new house for us so being able to upgrade things like the shades to something really nice looking is wonderful. And the blackout feature makes it great for sleeping when it’s daylight, whether it be sleeping in in the morning or an afternoon nap!”

Replacing Broken Bedroom Mini Blinds with SelectBlinds.com Blackout Cell Shades

Looking at the photos it is easy to see why Sharon is so excited about her home’s newest additions.

And with that, we are pleased to share the story of another happy customer!
