So, What Does a Typical Day Look Like for a SelectBlinds.com Design Consultant?

How exactly does your design consultant work?

Your consultant is responsible for:

  • Learning all about your projects and goals and then guiding you forward to get them over the finish line.
  • Engaging with your projects and goals by asking probing follow-up questions.
  • Getting to know you one-on-one and giving you the personalized care and attention you deserve as you work through your projects.
  • Understanding your level of knowledge, and exactly what kind of assistance you need or want.
  • Providing design guidance, recommendations, and troubleshooting obstacles that may arise.
  • Always following up with you, as needed. In other words, one less thing for you to worry about.

Once your design consultant learns more about your goals, the applications, and your desired level of assistance, he or she can customize each interaction to perfectly meet your needs and help save you time.

Your conversations will not be sales-focused, but rather are intended to best educate, guide, and fulfill your goals.

Through the relevant information, your consultant and you will get to know one another, develop a rapport, and you can expect timely follow-ups that you don’t have to plan yourself.

Consult with Confidence

Tools are provided to your consultant to better classify your projects, to better take the opportunity for needed follow-ups, and to better see each of your projects through to completion. Your consultant will also be given omnichannel communication capabilities to help him or her meet a wide variety of customer project needs.

Taking Your Kitchen Windows From Drab to Fab: A Select Blinds Q&A

Thinking of sprucing up your kitchen a bit to the next level of style? Consider updating your traditional kitchen curtains or blinds for newer, more modern window treatments that can instantly liven up your kitchen space

What sort of things should you consider when making a decision?

Q: What is Best to Cover Your Kitchen Windows?

A: You can select from a variety of different types of modern-looking window treatments for your kitchen windows, including cellular shades, Roman shades, sheer shades, dual/zebra shades, solar shades, curtains, or faux wood blinds or shutters.

Have you considered mini aluminum blinds? Aluminum blinds are built to last, with ample light and privacy management potential.

Like other modern window treatments, mini blinds can draw some nice attention to your kitchen windows, and can even tie those windows in to other design features you’ve selected for the room. The classic elements and modern details of mini blinds can offer a much needed balance to your kitchen, and still be budget-friendly. Whatever window treatments you end up selecting, make sure to create a kitchen space you’ll be proud of by enhancing its unique style, colors, and design.

Drab to Fab.

Q: Are Blinds, Shades, or Curtains Better in the Kitchen?

Open plan kitchen area with kitchen units and amenities around, with a counter/dining top surrounded by barstools in the middle of this bright kitchen space.

A: Blinds, shades, and also curtains are well-established window treatments for kitchens. You may consider that blinds, particularly mini aluminum blinds, might be a better choice to meet your damp, potentially messy kitchen space’s needs.

Also, blinds don’t “overcrowd” windows the way curtains sometimes can (with curtains’ fuller look and feel), and they’re much easier to keep clean.

For the sake of easier privacy and light management, consider layering curtains over your mini blinds.

Q: What is the Difference Between Blinds and Mini Blinds?

A: You might be familiar with the term “mini blinds,” but what does it really entail? Mini blinds are window blinds with slats that are about half the width of standard blinds.

Q: How Much Light Do I Need In My Kitchen? What About Colors?

A: Natural light can be an integral part of your kitchen space, and definitely brightens things up for your kitchen’s every day use. Regarding color selection, If your kitchen is smaller, consider light, cool colors to make it look larger and brighter. Darker, warmer colors can help larger kitchen spaces feel more cozy.

Keep in mind that modern design (if that’s what you’re going for) is based in the rejection of mainstream appeal to make way for a more minimalist design aesthetic. You might also consider implementing elements of modern abstract art designs that infuse bold colors. Primary/bold colors can also serve as handsome accents in your kitchen space.

Q: What Other Things Should I Consider Regarding My Kitchen Window Treatments?

A: Consider all the dampness, and sometimes spattering that goes on in your kitchen as a natural part of day-to-day use. The ease with which you’ll be able to keep your kitchen window treatments clean, will depend on the material they are made of. Man-made materials like aluminum and faux wood can be wiped down regularly (use water and some soap … go light on the cleaning solutions).

As far as a design theme is concerned, the Farmhouse/Cottage design aesthetic is popular for kitchens, and curtains/drapes, as well as wood blinds or faux wood blinds can lend themselves nicely to this look and feel. Aluminum mini blinds are not only durable and long-lasting, they also  lend themselves well to a warm, inviting café look and feel.

Modern design themes tend to favor straight, “clean” lines, using materials like aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, etc. Note that a lack of clutter/adornments will also contribute to a minimalist look and feel.

Q: What Type of Window Treatment is Easiest to Clean?

Aluminum blinds are easy to clean, as are just about any window coverings crafted with man-made materials. A damp cloth (even with a little soap) is all you’ll need to regularly keep them free of dust and kitchen grease. Wood blinds are also a great option, but keep in mind that for damp environments like the kitchen (or bathroom), the moisture can cause warping and cracking of natural materials like wood or bamboo/woven wood.

Do New Window Treatments Really Add Value to Your Home?

If you talk to several different real estate agents, you’ll probably get at least several different answers regarding things you can do to help increase the value of your home. One thing they’ll all likely agree on, is that one of the critical factors in maximizing your home’s resale value is to make sure your interior is bathed in good, adjustable lighting

Zillow.com directly mentions lighting on its “Best Home Improvements to Increase Value” list, asserting that: “Good lighting is crucial to showcasing your home’s features…” Zillow continues by stating that one of the best ways to invest in a better resale value for your home is to “Spruce up the décor with window treatments.”

But new window treatments can be an expensive endeavor for your home – not to mention a seemingly overwhelming task. And the cost can add up quickly if you’re paying someone to do your measurements and installation for you. Window installation can start at $20 per window, or for “by the hour” cost, up to $40 per hour. It might even cost you more if you don’t have your window treatments installed by the same company you bought them from.

But you can take better control of the costs if you do things right. You can find budget-friendly blinds and save yourself a ton if you’re willing to “DIY” it. And DIY doesn’t mean “all by yourself.” Select Blinds is here to help, for every step of your design project journey

Consider that window fashion for your home is actually a very worthwhile investment. Read on for reasons why new, stylish window treatments will not only add a breath of fresh air to your home’s interior décor, but why they’re also a smart way to add curbside appeal and increase the resale value to your home (especially louvered shutters).

Why Are Window Treatments a Good Investment?

Why are fashionable window treatments such a sought-after feature in a home? Nothing adds a welcoming sense of warmth and comfort to a space like beautiful custom window treatments. They’re the finishing touch of personalization on a well-designed space that you put your heart and soul into. A space you can be proud of!

Here are some more key reasons window treatments are such a great investment:

  1. Style

Window treatments are a perfect way to add color, depth, visual appeal and a personal sense of design style to any space. They can complement and accent your interior design motif.

  1. Light Control & Privacy

We’ve mentioned how important lighting is to highlight features in your home. And from a functionality standpoint, maybe you want blackout shades to help you or your children sleep in when you want to. Or maybe you want to watch your favorite movie without an annoying glare shining in.

Then there’s privacy. You should be able to easily and conveniently manage how well you can see outside, and prevent others from looking in from your home’s exterior.

  1. Energy Efficiency

Regardless of what type of climate you live in, or what time of year it may be, you can always find energy-efficient window covering options for your home that will help you reduce your energy bills significantly. What a great return for investing in your windows!

According to the United States Department of Energy: “In heating seasons, tightly installed cellular shades can reduce heat loss through windows by 40% or more, which equates to about 10% heating energy savings. In cooling seasons, cellular shades can reduce unwanted solar heat through windows by up to 60%, reducing the total solar gain to 20% when installed with a tight fit.”

Any type of window treatment blocks out the incoming heat from the sun’s rays and heat during warm weather months to help keep your indoor space nice and cool. For colder months, window treatments can keep the cold drafts out, and in some cases, like cellular / honeycomb shades, they can trap the heat to keep it indoors.

  1. Convenience

For homes with several windows, it can be time consuming to spend each day raising and lowering them all. Why not try motorized window treatments, or better yet, try automated ones. Tie all of the shades in an area of your home to a single remote control button, or better yet, all of your window treatments to an app, so you don’t even have to think about it.

  1. Protect Your Furniture and Interior

Everyone loves sunny weather. However, the sun’s harmful UV rays can inflict lasting damage on your furniture and on your home’s interior. Excessive UV exposure can cause premature drying, cracking, and fading. Keep your furniture and interior looking their best for a long time to come with protective window treatments (especially solar shades for your interior and exterior solar shades for your outdoor areas).

Home Office Ideas: What Is a “Cloffice” and What About the Lighting?

by SelectBlinds

“The Cloffice” sounds like it could an episode of one of your favorite
sitcoms (imagine a character turning a closet into an office … hilarity ensues!), but there actually is such a booming, must-have home office
design trend. And it makes perfect sense.

A byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic, working and attending school
from home have emphasized the importance of making the best use of
familiar indoor spaces. A “cloffice” (closet + office) is a space within a home that has craftily converted a closet, corner, or other nook into a trusty
office/workspace.

That storage space that is by far underused? Voila! New cloffice. That
empty space around from the bottom of the stairs? Hello, cloffice. The
seldom entered walk-in closet in the basement guest bedroom? Cloffice.
You get the idea.

Faux Wood Blinds in Cloffice
Faux wood blinds provide adjustable shade in your home office.

Benefits of a Cloffice

Well, the pandemic has definitely taught us how to be more content in
our existing indoor space. Maybe to appreciate being at home more.
Some pluses of creating a cloffice space include:

• Having a fun new DIY project to look forward to
• Using the space you already have (and not having to build on an
additional room to your home)
• Enjoying a designated, (at least somewhat) private space while
working or doing school from home
• Helping keep office supplies, books, etc. organized and in one
place
• Making the most of unused interior space
•Adding value to your home

Home Office Ideas for Small Spaces

You’ll want a reliable home office desk to work on. Maybe you need
shelving for your cloffice. Perhaps some file cabinets. Definitely a comfy
chair that doesn’t ruin your posture. There are tons of great cloffice ideas
out there for you to choose from. One feature of the mysterious closet office is taking an otherwise lifeless space, putting your personal signature on it, and making it truly “yours.” If you find yourself creating a cozy cloffice in a dark corner, you might want to add a favorite lamp for light.

A closet office window view, draped across the English countryside.

Or maybe your cloffice is nestled up against an often-ignored window. You don’t want to be squinting into your computer screen because of the glare caused by the incoming sunlight, right? Get control of the light in your home office design.

Keeping Your Cloffice Cool

Now that you’ve got your design almost complete, don’t forget about the glass! If you have a large window (compared to your cloffice size) you’ll most likely lose heat/cold through it. For great insulation and noise cancellation, try custom honeycomb shades. If you love the temperature and atmosphere of your closet office space, go for an easily-installed, unobtrusive roller shade to control light, any time of day!

2019 Select Blinds Scholarship Winner Claire King

Winner of 2019 $1000 SelectBlinds.com Scholarship
SelectBlinds.com 2019 Scholarship Winner, Claire King

After sifting through a handful of finalists for this year’s SelectBlinds.com $1000 Scholarship, the shimmering winner rose to the top of our list! Meet Claire King. Claire is currently attending The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., where she’ll graduate in 2023 with a degree in English Language and Literature.

This year, we put a slightly different spin on our scholarship, requiring entrants to use our window treatment samples to create an inspiration board for a room design that spoke to each individual’s style. Claire’s submission encompassed everything we expected from the winning entry, so we’re pleased to award her with $1000 toward taking her education to the next level. Here’s a little bit more about Claire, and be sure to check out her submission at the bottom of this post!

1. What inspired you to enter our Scholarship Program?

I love design and art, so it was refreshing to find a scholarship that allowed me to express myself with creativity but also with purpose. I also instantly knew what my idea would be, because I had thought about it before.

2. What influenced you to attend the Catholic University of America?

There are dozens of reasons why I love the school. I consider it my dream school. It’s located in Washington, D.C. (my favorite city), its association with Catholicism, and the honors program offers many different educational benefits. Also, the people there are really kind and welcoming because of the small size of the school.

3. What are some of your hobbies outside of school/work?

I love working with kids in the arts. I work at different centers in my community to work with kids at art camps. I also volunteer abroad teaching English to kids. I do art within the community, like mural painting and collaborations with other artists. I am going to continue this at Catholic U, because the school is in the center of the arts district of Washington, D.C. (another reason I love it).

Congrats, Claire! We hope that this scholarship helps you follow your passion! Click below to check out Claire’s entry and keep an eye out for your chance to win our 2020 college scholarship, opening up next month!
