What Even Are Cellular Shades?
Cellular shades are constructed by several soft-spun lace fabric “cells” that resemble a honeycomb. (Some people also call them honeycomb shades.) They act similarly to an accordion in that they expand or compress when you raise or lower them. The cell construction traps air and heat and provides insulation, which makes them the most energy-efficient window covering. In addition to their functionality, cellular shades come in a variety of colors, and they can be framed with curtains or drapes to create dimension.
Types of Cellular Shades
Single Cell vs. Double Cell
SelectBlinds cellular shades come in single- or double-cell constructions. Double cells simply means there is twice the amount of cells. It traps more air and adds another layer of insulation.
Light Filtering vs. Blackout
Both light-filtering and blackout shades block harmful UV rays. Light-filtering shades softly filters in light and creates a soft glow in the room. For blackout shades, the inside of the of the cells are lined with mylar, and it blocks up to 99 percent of incoming light.

Top Down Bottom Up cellular shades maintain your privacy while allowing incoming light. They utilize a mounted top rail along with a second floating rail that can be operated independently. To adjust them, you pull the tab down to lower the top of the shade and up to raise the bottom of the shade.
Trishades
Eliminate the need for multiple coverings with this two-in-one custom window treatment. Trishades can both filter light or black it out entirely, depending on how you adjust the sections. Simply pull down the light-filtering handle to let light in, or pull up on the handle for the blackout feature.

How to Choose the Right Cellular Shades for Your Home
When choosing the shade, factor in the climate where you live, where in the home the shade is going, and the size of your window.
If you’re somewhere temperamental, a double-cell shade will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If you live somewhere warm, a single-cell shade may provide enough insulation for you.
SelectBlinds cellular shades come in a variety of pleat sizes, from ⅜” to 2” wide. Typically, double-cell construction means smaller pleats, and single-cell means larger pleats. Smaller pleats will look more natural in shorter window frames; while the wider pleats are more proportional for larger sized windows.
Wider pleats are also lighter per square foot, which makes them ideal for large sliding doors and wider windows. This principle also applies when using them for skylight blinds and arches and window arches.
Because of their fabric material, cellular shades can absorb moisture and even odors. They’re not ideal for rooms exposed to condensation, such as kitchens or bathrooms. They are great though for rooms by busy streets because they reduce sound, and blackout cellulars help support a better night’s sleep.

Buying blinds is an investment! After all, window coverings can last 10-15 years before they need be replaced. So how do you choose the right blinds for your home? That’s what we’re here for.
Let’s start with some big-picture questions:
Aesthetic: What’s your current interior design style? Is your window covering going to match, or are you going for an eclectic approach?
Placement: What room is the shade going in? Certain factors, like exposure to humidity, will affect the type of blind or shade you should consider.
Texture: Are you looking for something light and airy, or something with more depth?

Once you land on those answers, it’s time to decide between custom-made blinds or ready-made blinds. However, you might not find exactly what you want with pre-cut blinds. As an online custom blinds retailer, we are obviously biased and here’s why:
SizeMatters
Custom-made shades aren’t built until we receive your measurements. Meanwhile, pre-cut shades are constructed based on standard window sizes. They have limited sizes, which makes them readily available for whenever you need them. (But just because they’re available, does that really mean they’re right for you?)
Color Options
Both types come in limited colors; however, custom-made companies typically have more colors and prints to choose from. At SelectBlinds, we set you up for success with free samples. The six extra weeks of winter are almost over, and we cannot wait for warmer weather. (That’s saying a lot given SelectBlinds is based in Arizona.) As you’re getting ready for more sun, consider incorporating solar shades into your home.
Solar shades operate like roller shades; however, the material is often less dense than rollers. This means solars can be fully lowered and still provide an outside view (more on that later). Other features include:
UV Protection: Solar shades reflect light and can block up to 95% of harmful UV rays. They keep furniture from being damaged while also reducing the glare on screens.
Energy Efficient: In the hot weather months, interior solar shades can reduce incoming heat by 30 to 70 percent, which will help decrease energy costs.
Kid Friendly: All our shades are available with a Cordless Lift, which is the safest style for homes with young children. Some solar shades have an option to upgrade to Motorization.

1. Where is the placement of the shade?

A basic but important question. Are these shades going inside or outside? That will determine if you need interior or exterior solar shades.
Both are made of durable PVC materials, but exterior solar shades are generally constructed from weather-proof materials. Interior shades are moisture and mold-resistant, so they can be in rooms regardless of humidity.
2. What level of openness do you want?

Openness refers to the tightness of the fabric weave, which is an indication of the percentage of light that can penetrate through. Our blinds range from 1% to 14%.
A low number, or low openness percentage, means the fabric is tightly woven. The low percentages (i.e. 1-5%) block out more UV rays and offer more privacy. With a low openness, the outward visibility through the shade is limited.
A high openness percentage (i.e. 14%) has a looser fabric weave, which means there’s more visibility and still a decent glare reduction.
Tip: Lighter colors for interior or exterior solar shades can block more glare, and darker colors improve your visibility to the outside.
3. Should you add a layer?

Remember, solar shades reflect light. During the day, it blocks a view into your home from the outside while allowing you to see from the inside out.
The effect is reversed during the evening. The solar shades reflect the lights in your home, which blocks your outward view and allows visibility from outside the home.
So, should you add a layer for privacy? It’s really up to you!
If the solar shade faces your backyard, privacy may not be a big concern. If your solar shade faces a street and you want privacy, consider layering curtains so that you can close them at night and block visibility from the outside.
