As we approach the halfway point for 2022, we thought it would be fun to showcase some of the most exciting trends in window treatment patterns, and to show off some of our most popular patterns this year so far.
What sort of trends have been prominent so far in 2022? Let’s talk about some of them.
1. Bold Botanicals
We love flowers and natural botanicals (and who doesn’t?). See what a bold botanical or floral print can do for your interior. Seize the day to accent and accompany your own unique, beloved decorating design with something memorable.
Go outside and enjoy nature, but then bring it back into your home for 2022. Bring a natural and organic vibe into your home with natural wood colors, along with earthy tones to bring a relaxing touch of the outdoors indoors.
Green: reminiscent of living flora and a refreshing touch of nature. Many designers consider green to be a go-to neutral color, so they can include the color in a wider selection of motifs.
You’ve got the perfect pattern for your window treatments so that they blend in beautifully with your interior. Now make your life easier with motorization or automation. Relax and let the motors do all the work.
Keep your décor and your eyes safe from the harsh glare of the sun. A choice between 1%, 3%, and 5% weaves can help you find the best level of light-blocking solar shades for your windows. Trending Pattern: Pearl.
*Our Signature Tier products feature thoughtful designs in trendy styles. Made with durable materials, Signature Tier products are the perfect place to start when looking for a beyond basic solution that is also affordable.
Enjoy added dimension for your windows and interior with these light filtering fabric shades that come standard with cordless lift. 2022 Trending Patterns: Mojave Sand or Stone Harbor.
You’ll love the custom options available with this premium quality roller, like the side tracks to block light around the edges, or the matching fabric cassette headrail. 2022 Trending Pattern: Magnetic Gray.
Shed some light on the illusion of added depth and dimension for your windows when you enjoy these light filtering fabric shades with cordless lift included. 2022 Trending Pattern: Natural.

Every journey begins with a first step, so let’s walk through the Select Blinds customer journey together starting with . . .
1. Measuring Your Windows
The first step (or one of the first steps) you will take with your DIY project is to measure your windows. We custom make your window coverings and need as accurate a measurement as you can provide to ensure the best fit. Don’t worry, it’s easy!
Maybe at this point, you will have your window coverings already selected, maybe not. No matter.
Having accurate window measurements will not only help with a good fit, but also helps determine how your window covering is priced, and will also help determine the variety of options available to you.
2. Choosing the Best Window Coverings for Your Needs + Ordering Samples
You will want to select the right window coverings to meet your unique needs. Are you looking for energy-efficiency? Are you needing a dark cool room for your child’s naptime? Maybe you want a quieter work environment for your home office. Are these window treatments replacing older ones, or are they for a brand new home?
Here are some things to consider:
Which room are you needing new blinds, shades, shutters, or curtains for?
How many windows are you needing to cover?
What unique needs does your room (or rooms) have? Privacy? Quiet? Is it a child’s room? Talk to one of our design consultants for free, and get some input and tips for what would work best for what you’re trying to accomplish.
Once you have a window treatment style and color/design/texture selected, be sure to order free samples! You can order up to 15 free samples daily, shipped to your door for free, and on top of that, ordering samples ensures you can lock in a daily promo for up to 30 days after your samples arrive.
3. Finding the Best Price
So many online blinds stores, so little time. There are any number of brands out there, so how do you know which is best? Should you go with a full-service brand (which includes measuring and installation), or should you go with more of a DIY brand?
Custom window treatments are priced based on the cost of materials–the larger the dimensions, the higher the cost. Most brands of window treatments offer many of the same styles and types, and don’t vary very much in terms of quality. Retailers tend to offer a broader range of differences, including customer experience. The “best” choice for a homeowner ultimately depends on his or her desired result and budget. Keep in mind that measuring, installation costs, and shipping fees can quickly add up toward the final price tag for your home design update project.
The average cost of hiring help for blinds installation can average you around $700 for your entire home. Cut out the middleman! Doing your own measuring and installing yourself is the most efficient and cost-effective way to approach the dressing of your windows. Spearheading your own project and doing it yourself doesn’t require any expertise or special tools. It’s super easy, and we’re here to make it even easier! And remember, any promo you see on any given day? Just order free samples, we’ll ship them to you for free, and you can lock in any promo for 30 days after your samples arrive. We want to make sure you get the best price possible.
We offer you all kinds of helpful online resources for easy-to-follow instruction, and hassle-free measuring and installation. Plus you’ll have access to our top-notch customer service team, along with free design consulting, 7 days per week!
Many companies also charge shipping fees, especially for “oversized” items. At SelectBlinds.com, you always get free shipping to anywhere in the contiguous United States, no matter how large your items are!

What Protections Do You Have if You Submit Your Window Measurements Incorrectly?
We’ve even got you covered if you should happen to submit inaccurate window measurements. We call it our Select Blinds F.I.T. Guarantee.

Note that if the dimensions of the remake are larger than your original blinds, there may be a small price increase due to material costs. Remakes under this guarantee are limited to one (1) per order and a total of four (4) per household per customer lifetime, whether for the same or different product(s). As far as light control goes, window treatments typically fall within one of three categories: light filtering, room darkening, and blackout. Where do room darkening roller shades fall on the light-control spectrum? Room darkening shades are known for being not too dark, and not too light. They can help set a tranquil mood, and offer the right amount of privacy any time, day or night.
While room darkening shades offer more light control than light filtering shades, they don’t block out light as fully as blackout shades (i.e., room darkening shades block out up to 95 percent of incoming light, while blackout shades can block out up to 99 percent).
What’s the Difference Between Room Darkening and Blackout Shades?
Roller shades are known to let light in through gaps between mounting hardware and the top of the shade. To achieve a full blackout effect with your window treatments of choice, you’ll probably need to mount them above your window frame or use a valance. Woven-wood shades, and shades made of lighter materials, will typically need a liner to effectively block out light and to provide privacy at night. As mentioned, room darkening shades do a great job of blocking out up to 95% of incoming light, while blackout shades can block out up to 99%.
Wirecutter says: “We like cellular shades because they look good, effectively block light, and are easy to install. Our panel unanimously agreed that the Select Blinds’ Cordless Blackout Cellular Shades [are] the [ones] they’d most like in their homes. The polyester shade looks and feels noticeably better in quality than other shades we considered. Among the shades we tested, it has one of the widest selections of sizes and colors, and it’s covered by a three-year warranty, the longest of any model we considered.”
How do I Stop the Light From Coming Up On the Side of My Roller Shades?

Relaxing white living room features corner stone fireplace lined with tan walls accented with lower wall white wainscoting framing large windows with gorgeous view. Luxury interior.
Personalize your house and turn it into your dream home – we can help! No need to break the bank to do it, either. Sharpen those interior DIY design instincts, and save yourself plenty of money in the process. You got this! Custom-craft a home that you’re proud to live in. It’s easy, and you’ll find all the helpful resources you’ll need at selectblinds.com. Treat your windows right with the right window treatments.
Window treatments are one detail of an interior design that may not seem very important, but the truth is, nothing warms up a room and makes it feel inviting more than stylish blinds, curtains, shades, or shutters. Window treatments can add a personalized finishing touch to a space, as well as provide privacy and incoming light management to meet your unique needs. They can help cut your energy costs throughout the year, help protect your interior and furniture from damage caused by UV rays, and they can even help you sleep in on weekends and keep your room dark and cool for naptime. One classic, yet popular and stylish type of window covering is fashionable roller shades.
Are Roller Shades Expensive?
Theater room in luxury home with wide screen
Roller shades are relatively inexpensive when compared to other window treatment types (which is one reason they are so popular among homeowners and designers). What you end up paying for them will depend upon upgrades you may add on, and whether or not you pay to have someone install them for you. You can save yourself plenty of money if you are willing to take some time to do your own window measurements and your own installation. Select Blinds makes it so easy for you!
What makes one window treatment or roller shade more expensive than another?
What Determines the Cost of a Roller Shade?
The type of roller shade you cost (i.e., basic vs. designer), plus upgrades, will obviously have an impact on the final cost of your window coverings. Following are some additional factors that can affect how much roller shades end up being priced.
Size
None of our products are “off-the-shelf.” Every product we sell is custom-crafted just for you and your windows. The larger the surface area you need to cover, the more material will be needed for your custom roller shade.
Fabric/Material
Roller shades crafted with more expensive fabrics and materials tend to be priced higher.
Upgrades
Maybe you want to upgrade to a 6” valance for your roller shades. Maybe you want to upgrade to Kid-friendly cordless lift. Or maybe you want to spoil yourself with a motorized lift system so you can open and close your shades from the couch across the room. Upgrades will bring your cost up somewhat. Some products include upgrade features, as do our Premier and Luxury tier products.
We’ve compiled some pricing for four different roller shades available on our website to show you what your cost per window will be before sales tax and before upgrades. Remember, shipping is always on us!

Roller shades for windows come in countless different colors, textures, and patterns to perfectly complement and top off your own unique design style. Nothing adds the perfect finishing touch to a space better than beautiful custom window coverings, and stylish roller shades can make all the difference in this regard. Homeowners and designers alike should consider some key factors when selecting roller shades:
Inside or outside mount
Texture/weave/craftsmanship
Color/pattern
What Are Roller Shades?
Basically, roller shades are simple, solid, continuous window coverings. They don’t open and close through their main surface, the way blinds can do when you open and close their slats or vanes, but rather they open and close up and down using a roller mechanism, retracting toward or unfurling away from their headrails. The materials used to custom craft our roller shades is not sheer (see-through) at all.
Roller shades are popular for their simple, clean appearance and stylish budget-friendliness. As with any fashionable window treatments, they can add depth and a nice, personalized accent to your space, with unlimited options for trendy materials, colors, and fabrics.
How Are Solar Shades Different Than Roller Shades?
Solar shades are also pretty simple window coverings, and they cover windows and function using a roller mechanism as roller shades do–without slats or vanes.
Solar shades tend to carry a slightly higher price tag than roller shades, mainly because of the materials used for their construction: woven material (usually PVC), similar to a window screen, is used to craft solar shades.
This loosely woven screen material allows for some transparency through the shade… it can reflect sunlight away from the screen, provide coverage from UV rays, and still allow for a view to the outside. Solar shades help protect your furniture and interior from UV ray damage, and help keep your interior cool. The “openness percentage” can vary, allowing for more or less coverage, in exchange for more or less outward visibility (e.g., the higher the visibility percentage, the more see-through capability).
Inside or Outside Mount?
Depending on your window frame’s depth and size, you can choose to mount your roller shades on the inside of the frame or on the outside (above the window, attached to the wall, or attached to the ceiling above the window). Keep in mind that outside mount usually allows more light in from the sides, and also leaves a bit of a wider gap for less privacy, but light blocking side tracks can help keep tighter closure for light and privacy management.
Texture/Weave/Craftsmanship
Textures can add a nice element of depth to an interior design motif. See what a lovely array of textures and fabrics you have to choose from for your roller shades. Creating a layering effect can also add depth to your window/space.
Speaking of craftsmanship, we at Select Blinds don’t sell “prefabricated sized” off-the-shelf window treatments. All of our window products are custom-crafted with care to fit your unique window sizes perfectly. We’ll also be there with you to help you DIY your house into your dream home, so you can save money and take pride in the newly designed gorgeous space you’ve created.
Colors/Patterns
You’ll also have a vast number of colors and patterns to choose from. If you want your window treatments to be the focal centerpoint of your room, then go with bolder colors or patterns. If you don’t want your roller shades to detract from any interior elements, go with more subtle colors and patterns.
A couple of things to keep in mind regarding your roller shade color of choice:
Neutral Colors can help Roller Shades Blend Into Your Design
Creamy whites, natural browns, greys, charcoals–these are all good color selections to help your blinds blend in more seamlessly into your interior. Think balance. Colors like grey or silver can also add an additional metallic element of color to your interior if you have a design with primarily wood fixtures.
Accent Colors Can Add Your Own Unique Touch To Your Design
Neutral tones can be difficult to top in regard to balancing out your colors in a space, but bright colors can help with balance, too. A splash of color can liven up an otherwise heavy, drab décor.
What Color Roller Shades Make a Room Look Bigger and Brighter?
If you are going for an enlarging effect in your space, you’ll want to select softer, lighter shades of color (e.g., white, off-white, cream, etc.), as darker shades can make an area feel more enclosed. Lighter colors always give an airy, spacious feeling to a room. Something else you might try is to paint your window trim and moldings in lighter shades than your wall color.

Make your home all yours by turning it into your dream home. Without breaking the bank. Nothing fills a space or makes a home or outdoor deck or patio area feel warmer and more welcoming than our beautiful window treatments. Solar shade fabrics are generally referred to in the context of “opacity” and in percentages of “openness.” Solar shades (and exterior solar shades) operate like roller shades, and are known for providing excellent UV ray blockage (and privacy), while still allowing a view to the outside. They are also known for helping your energy bills (block out heat and light in the summer when closed, or open them in the winter to let sunlight in to help keep your interior warm).
Openness indicates the tightness of the fabric weave, which is an indication of the percentage of light that can penetrate through (e.g. 1%, 3%, 5%, etc.). Low openness means a more tightly woven fabric, with less visibility through the shade and a higher opacity. Higher openness percentages indicate a looser fabric weave, and therefore, greater visibility.
The corresponding number to an openness percentage is the opacity of a fabric: a fabric with 1% openness has an opacity of 99% (97% opacity to 3% openness, 95% opacity to 5% openness, etc.) – the opacity is the percentage of light blockage the fabric is capable of. For more flexibility in managing your interior privacy and incoming light, you may consider dual (or zebra) shades, which display their versatility in combining the functionality of a solid roller shade with the adaptability of horizontal blinds. A layer of sheer stripes alternates with a layer of solid stripes – imagine a continuous fabric shade that you can open and close, as you would window blinds.
Visualizing the Openness Factor
Lower openness percentages (e.g., 1% – 5%) block out more of the sun’s UV rays, offering more protection for your furniture/interior finishes, and they also offer more privacy – they do, however, limit outward visibility.
Medium openness percentages (e.g., 10%) maintain a good amount of your view to the outside, while still offering suitable protection for your furniture/interior.
A high openness percentage (e.g., 14%) provide the best visibility to the outside, as well as decent glare reduction.
Do Solar Shades Provide Privacy During the Day?
Beautiful Luxury Home, Exterior Patio Lounge at Sunset
Solar shades are effective at reflecting sunlight during the day, so as to block a view into your interior from the outside, while allowing you to see from the inside out. Keep in mind that at night, with your interior lights on, the effect is opposite: the interior light is reflected off of the solar fabric, blocking your outward view, while allowing visibility from the exterior.
If you should install solar shades and are concerned about privacy, consider implementing a layering effect, by adding opaque curtains between your shade and interior, so you can close them at night to block visibility from the outside.

Solar shades, generally speaking, are known for being designed to protect from harsh UV rays that can damage eyesight, skin, and furniture. They provide privacy, while still maintaining an exterior view. Note that lighter colors for both types of these shades can block more glare, while darker colors improve your visibility to the outside. There are both interior solar shades and then those for use outdoors – these two kinds of solar shades offer similar benefits, though there are some differences. Look for custom-crafted solar shade options to fit your unique needs.
Solar Shades
Solar shades are mounted indoors, mainly to help protect your interior and furniture from fading and discoloration. Interior solar shades tend to work well in climates where it gets cold in the winter; in the summer months, you can keep your solar shades closed to block out the sun’s rays. In the hot weather months, these shades can reduce incoming heat by 30 to 70 percent. In the wintertime, you can open them up, to let the sun’s rays in to help keep your house warm. Think of a two-in-one shade that offers privacy, as well as protection from exterior glare.
Exterior Solar Shades
Exterior solars are mounted outside, attached to your home like an awning, and they are usually better for warmer climates. Not only do they block out the sun’s glare, they can help protect your furniture from sun damage (exterior solars are best utilized over decks, patios, and south-facing windows). They can reduce incoming heat by about 80 percent. Exterior solar shades are generally constructed from weather-proof, durable PVC to keep them looking new for years to come, but be sure to double check – you don’t want to mount exterior solars constructed with interior solar shade materials.

Let Us Help You “DIY” Your House Into Your Dream Home
Nothing fills a space or makes a home feel warmer than our beautiful window treatments. Fine tune those interior DIY design instincts, and save yourself plenty of money in the process. It’s easy! We can help you transform your house into your dream home! Treat your windows right with the right window treatments – by themselves, or layered for a rich, deepening effect!
So, you think you know window treatments (curtains, shades, shutters, and blinds), but what happens when you double them up for a layering effect? Layering isn’t a functional necessity of décor, but if you do it right, it adds dimension and an alluring final touch to any living space. Layering also invites a distinct softening effect into a room, and takes your capacity for privacy and light control up to the next level. And never forget, layering simply brings more style into your space, right? Nothing warms up and personalizes a space like beautiful window treatments, and the results are even better with a well-done layering effect.
Layering is most commonly done with curtains or drapes layered over blinds, shades, or even shutters – it is one of the easiest ways to give your space a unique look, one that perfectly reflects your style and your personality. Think of bamboo or cellular shades layered with full-length curtains, for example. With the layering in place, you can open or close one or both layers for interesting lighting effects, and to manage privacy, especially at night.
It’s not difficult, either. Following are three pro tips about how to achieve a successful design-centric layering effect.
1. Think Function: What Do You Need From Your Window Treatments?
Think about what you need. A virtually full blackout effectfor a nursery or your bedroom so you can sleep in? Maybe you need privacy in the daytime, but you still want to let some natural light in.
2. Think in Terms of Your Optimal Focal Point
Among the many ways you can layer windows, keep in mind that you’re not just layering for the sake of layering. In addition to increased functionality, you probably want to create a visual effect. To do so, let one of your layers be the main focal point and let the other layer fade into the background. You might go with a bolder color or pattern for the outer layer curtains, so then consider a neutral color of blinds, shades, or shutters for the inner layer. Voila! You’ll have a visually appealing, yet subtle layering effect.
Also be cognizant of how you decorate the rest of the room. Your window treatments should complement and/or accent your interior design motif. If you’re going bold on the curtains, you don’t want them to clash with or detract from a colorful rug you want to show off.
3. Ensure Each Window Treatment is Installed Correctly
If you really want to pull off a successful layering effect, your first step is to make sure your window treatments are installed correctly. Install the curtain rod to hang your curtain layer “high and wide” (above the window and extended beyond the window frame on each side). If you have the space to go high and wide, you can also achieve an enlarging effect for your space. Your windows can appear wider, and your room can appear taller.
4. Stay With the Same Window Treatments Throughout A Space
In large part, window treatments help define a space. To avoid clashing effects, and making your space look disjointed, you’ll likely want to keep the same kinds of window treatments (and layering effects) in the same space. Remember to think in terms of your optimal focal point–this applies even for large spaces and rooms. If you are intending to divide up a space into distinct areas, using different coverings might work for defining each separate space.
Though you may go with different window treatments for different rooms in your home, keep in mind that a home with matching window treatments typically looks more uniform and therefore appealing from the street – especially for traditional-style homes, with exterior aesthetics reliant upon symmetry. Using the same window treatments for all street-facing windows tends to give a house a consistent look, without the distraction of windows that look different than the others.
5. How Do You Mix and Match Window Treatments?
Blinds, Shades, or Shutters
For the most common layering effect, start by dolling your windows up with your favorite blinds, shades, or shutters – wood (or faux wood) blinds or shutters, maybe bamboo shades, maybe Roman shades, or cellular shades. As long as you love them, it doesn’t matter what you choose!
Optional Cornice
You can add a cornice, if you like, depending on how much of a layering effect you want (adding a cornice is optional). Some homeowners like the finished look a cornice gives a space, but you may want to go more minimalist. Using a cornice is just another way to add depth to your space and to your window treatments.
Curtains or Roman Shades
The final step is to add a top layer of curtains, drapes, or even Roman shades. Find a combination that you love!

DIY Your House Into Your Dream Home
Nothing fills a space or makes a home feel warmer than our beautiful window treatments. Fine tune those interior DIY design instincts, and save yourself plenty of money in the process. We can help you transform your house into your dream home! Treat your windows right with the right window treatments – by themselves, or layered for a rich, deepening effect!
You might find yourself challenged to find just the right functional and stylish window treatments for your wide glass patio door or sliding glass door. Have you considered panel curtains? Curtains/drapery give you the option to go traditional, but also to go with a more contemporary style for your wide–windowed doors.
These large glass windows let in a lot of beautiful, natural light and are a sought-after feature in many of today’s homes, but you still need to account for privacy and light control. Just because there are options for covering your sliding glass door or wide–windowed doors, they may not fit in with your décor, or be user friendly. Vertical blinds are a common choice for wide windows and glass patio doors, for example, but maybe you’re looking for a different look and feel.
Do You Put Curtains on Patio Doors?
Short answer: absolutely! Whether decorating a space, showcasing your amazing view, or managing privacy needs, there’s a window treatment to suit your every need. But don’t ever underestimate the power of stylish curtains and drapes.
Curtains are an incredibly cost-effective solution for large windows and glass doors/sliding doors.
What Curtains to Select for a Sliding Door: Some Things to Consider
Before settling on curtains or drapery for your patio doors, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Make sure your curtains and curtain rod are sized correctly. For example, if your curtain rod runs just to the edge of the frame of your glass patio door, the curtain stack may get in the way of your entrances and exits through that door. Be sure your curtain rod is long enough to extend beyond the door frame to allow your curtains to fully open, allowing free use of the door. Also, measure your curtains accurately, so they have width enough to close completely without looking like they’re drawn too tightly.
Pro Tip: Hang your patio door curtains so they extend downward to about an inch above the floor – this will help keep them clean and out of the way.
Be judicious in your color selection. Since sliding glass doors and glass patio doors are known to have a sizable surface area, be aware of this when you decide your curtain color. Bold colors or patterns that look amazing on a smaller window might be overwhelming amidst your interior design when covering a larger area.
Pro tip: You might consider coordinating your curtains with your wall color for a more contemporary, seamless look.
Should your curtains open to the left or to the right? A good rule of thumb is to have your curtains open in the same direction as the door. If your door opens from the left to the right, make sure your curtains open that way.
Use curtain tiebacks to get more out of your curtains. When patio doors are open, curtains may get blown around in the breeze, exposing them to dirt and dust – flowy curtains can also create a tripping hazard. Keep your curtains drawn back and held in place with curtain tiebacks. More style and more functionality.
Try to avoid pocket-style curtains for patio doors. Pocket-style curtains look great on many kinds of windows, but they don’t easily open and close. Grommet-style or pinch pleat curtains are your best options.
