Dear Select Blinds,

We have within the past 2 years purchased 10 rooms of Premium Smooth Vertical Blinds from your company. We have recommended your products to many of our friends and family. The product that you offer is so easy to install and looks absolutely GREAT! Everyone comments on them when they see them. The Color selections and measurements are the best, especially when we had a 10 foot window to have to install and could not find anyone in the area to get what we were looking for. Pricing can’t be forgotten. Attached are some photos of some of the rooms with your product. Keep up the good work for customers in need like us.

Thank you

Choosing the Right Cell Size for Honeycomb Shades

by Charlene 21 Feb 2014

Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are modern, energy efficient, and stylish. But knowing which cell size is right for your windows can be tricky. Ordering the wrong cell size can lessen its energy-saving efficiency, look wrong in the window, and even cause damage to the shade itself. Don’t let that overwhelm you. Figuring out the right cell size is easy. Here’s what you need to know.

Double versus Single Cell

Double cell honeycomb shades offer more insulation, saving you even more money on energy costs. However, this also means the shades are much heavier than their one-cell counterpart. Choosing double cell shades for a large window can make it difficult and too heavy to operate. As a result, it can cause cord strain and even some bowing because of its weight. So, leave double cell shades for small to midsized windows.

Single cell honeycomb shades are obviously much lighter, as was already mentioned. Even though they provide less insulation than the double cells, they still are great options if you want added insulation. No matter if you choose a cellular shade with single or double cells, you’ll still get the same great look and the same great benefits, just to different degrees.

Small Cell Sizes

Smaller cells mean the pleats are narrower, which makes it perfect for a smaller window. Our smallest cell size is 3/8”. Using small cell shades for big windows can make it look chaotic because of the excessive number of cells and pleats. If you have a narrow window sill, go with small cell shades so they fit naturally.

Medium Cell Sizes

If you have a medium-sized window and are looking for a cellular shade that reflects that size, go with 1/2" or 9/16” cell sizes. These sizes are the most popular because they provide good balance for all sizes of window, all without being too overwhelming.

Large Cell Sizes

Large windows should be covered with 3/4" single cell shades. Because of the distance these shades will need to cover, you want to make sure they will be light enough so they won’t need extra support and that they’re still easy to use. This cell size is also great aesthetically because of its large pleats, bringing refinement and sophistication to any large window. If you have deeper window sills, choose large cell shades to make use of all that space.

I had asked for these for my birthday and my daughter Nikki ordered them for me. The blinds were the 2" Express Faux Blinds - Premium Colors (oak). They are so beautiful! Three years later and I love them as much today as the day I got them. They were the perfect fit, perfect color, and I measured and hung them myself! The price can't be beat either. VERY happy customer!! These are all in my Living Room.

It is easy to be happy with your products.  I bought two top down-bottom up blinds last November. They were perfect! So I ordered 4 more corded blinds for two more rooms. That was back in January.  They too came in good time and in fine condition. Your store is the only one I will use from now on!! Thanks so much.

I just want to convey that I am so happy with my blind purchase. I purchased your 2" Designer Faux Wood blinds for our dining room and kitchen. I couldn't be more happier with the look. The headers that were included are like the icing on the cake. The cuts were perfect and the overall look is very classy.

The order process was very efficient, the cost for the four blinds I purchased can not be beat. I highly recommend Select Blinds to anyone looking for new blinds.

Using Hideous Rooms as Decorating Inspiration

by Charlene 18 Feb 2014

Looking at pictures of beautiful rooms can be inspiring. But did you know that hideous, outdated rooms can also be a source of inspiration? It may not be your first instinct, but how can you know what you like if you don’t know what you dislike? It’s a part of the same package, but it’s often neglected. Not sure what to look for? Here’s how to start:

Take Pictures of Your Own Home

Your home may not have hideous rooms, but there are probably rooms that aren’t your favorite. This is your chance to figure out why. Take pictures of your least favorite rooms. Then, study them on your computer. Find the areas of each room that don’t work. Once you can pinpoint those areas, the next step is to determine why you don’t like that space. Here are some questions to consider:

  • Does it have to do with the wall color? Accent or furniture colors?
  • Is it too boring or too eclectic?
  • How’s the natural light in the room?
  • Does the furniture placement make the room feel disjointed?
  • Do you have too much furniture in one room? Not enough?

If you need help pinpointing the problem, ask a friend to help. It can be difficult to view your own decor objectively. Letting someone else give their insight can help you see your home in a different way. Remember that you don’t have to do everything they suggest. Consider their opinions. Whether you use them or not is up to you.

Scour the Internet

If you’re looking for more ugly home inspiration, it’s time to scour the internet. It won’t be difficult to find large compilations of hideous rooms. Just as you did with your own pictures, start identifying what doesn’t work and why. Most likely, these will be easier to pick out than with your own pictures. Have fun with this part.

Here are a few to get you started:

1. What do you learn from the picture below? Be careful when experimenting with painting techniques. It’s great to try something new, but sometimes it’s best left to the professionals.

Photo Credit: Sears Ugly Room Contest

2. Bright colors are great, but they have to be used effectively. Instead of painting this much fluorescence on the walls, opt for bright accents to create a subtler, yet bold, look. You don’t have to use bright colors sparingly, but make sure there’s a method to your madness.

Photo Credit: Sears Ugly Room Contest

3. There’s nothing wrong with a minimalistic style. However, sometimes it can become a little too extreme. When this happens, a room can easily feel empty and boring. Is there anything about this room that makes you want to spend time in there? Minimalism can be done beautifully, but this isn’t it.

Photo Credit: Sears Ugly Room Contest

4. The individual components aren’t bad. The red walls could look great in another room, but not in this one. The room is too dark to have such dark paint, and it makes the room feel dreary and cave-like. What works in one room may not work in another. There are so many factors that can affect the outcome. Proper planning and experimentation can help you find the perfect home décor choices for each room.

Photo Credit: Sears Ugly Room Contest

Now that you’ve looked at plenty of ugly rooms, you know what to avoid. The more rooms, both ugly and beautiful, you look at, the more things you'll know to avoid. Don't forget to reward yourself by looking at fashionable, modern rooms for even more inspiration. And then create the dream home you've always wanted, one room at a time.

Home Automation and Improving Quality of Life

by Charlene 14 Feb 2014

Home automation used to be the stuff of science fiction, but now it’s actually possible for the masses. Home automation is about using modern technology to simplify daily tasks, like turning the lights on and setting the home security system. These technological advancements have allowed people to turn their homes into smart homes, where most everything that can be automated is automated.

But home automation is more than that, at least for some people. It’s also about improving the quality of life for those with handicaps, illnesses, and the elderly. Tasks that may be simple for many can be complicated, tedious, and frustrating for those who need a little extra help. Home automation gives the everyday control back to those who need it most.

If you’re considering home automation for yourself or a loved one, here are some upgrades that should be at the top of your list:

Motorized Window Coverings

Window coverings are important for light control, insulation, and privacy. Choosing motorized window coverings allows you to raise, lower, and tilt blinds according to your needs. Because motorized window blinds and shades are cordless, they are a natural choice if you have children or pets in the home. You can choose to use a remote or add it to your home automation system. From there, you could set it up so the blinds opened or closed at certain times of the day so you or your loved one won't have to worry about it, and it would still provide the needed light control and privacy the blinds were designed for.

Automated Interior Lighting

Set up your interior lights to be sensitive to motion. This means they’ll turn on when you walk into a room and turn off when you leave, helping you lower electric costs. Or you could set up your lighting to turn on or off at certain times to coincide perfectly with your schedule. Or better yet, set up your lighting so it automatically adjusts based on the amount of natural light in each room.

Selective Phone System

Not every call that comes through needs to be answered. You can program your phone to only ring when select numbers call. Schedule it for your busiest times, so you can get more work done, or make it a permanent feature to weed out all unwanted calls. These callers will still get to leave a message, even if they’re not on the approved caller list.

Just a few little improvements and your quality of life or that of your loved one will skyrocket. Life is hard enough already. Simplify it with home automation.

I could not be happier with the experience and my new blinds. Select Blinds made the process very easy: order samples, watch the How To Measure video, order online, voila! My beautiful custom blinds arrived in no time. I loved that since I had typed each room name into the field on the order form, I simply looked at the sticker on the blind and put the correct blind in each room in preparation for installing. The easy to follow installation instructions were included as well as the hardware needed for each blind. So straightforward!

I purchased Cordless 9/16" Single Cell Blackout Shades in Moonlight for the bedroom. I have included day and night shots. As a sensitive sleeper, I love how these blinds block out the light and also how beautiful they look with my furnishings.

I purchased Cordless 3/8" Double Cell Light Filter Shades in Snowflake for my dining area. These are the very first thing people notice when they walk into my new place and everyone comments on how awesome they are. Visitors seemed "wowed" by the cordless top down/bottom up feature. In addition to an interior shot, I included a shot from my deck so folks could see how much privacy they offer, and how nice they look from the exterior as well as the interior of a home.

Should You Decorate in Neutral or Vibrant Colors?

by Charlene 4 Feb 2014

The right color scheme is important in creating a cohesive style throughout your home. But what’s right for one home may not be the right choice for your home. Which colors you choose—wall color, furniture, and accents—will create the overall statement of the room. What do you want your home to say? Before you get to specifics, first figure out the basics.

Decorate in Neutrals or Vibrant Colors?

If you start out answering the most generic question, it will lead you to more specifics. So, will you decorate your home in neutrals or vibrant colors? Here are the pros and cons of each choice.

Pros of Neutrals:

  • Can give a rustic, warm feeling to any room.
  • Neutrals make a great canvas to bring more attention to your unique décor pieces.
  • They're versatile and allow you to change your color scheme and style of furniture easily. And without having to buy all new things and paint the entire interior of your home.
  • Neutral colors can provide balance for eccentric and eclectic pieces or architectural features.
  • Can be calming and peaceful.
  • If paired correctly, it can be dramatic and sophisticated. Think of a black and white room.

Cons of Neutrals:

  • Can easily become boring and bland.
  • Can make your home feel washed out.
  • If too neutral, your home will feel like it’s devoid of personality or even lacking unique style.

Pros of Vibrant Colors:

  • Vibrant colors can add instant energy.
  • They easily become the focal point in the room, drawing the eye toward it immediately.
  • If kept on-trend, it can bring a modern vibe to the space.
  • It’s easy to add personality when integrating vibrant colors into your décor.
  • A little goes a long way in creating flair.

Cons of Vibrant Colors:

  • It can easily get out of hand and overwhelming. Too many vibrant colors close to each other can make your home look like a circus.
  • Trendy colors are replaced quickly, so you might be left updating your color scheme more often than you would prefer.
  • The wrong color can create imbalance in a room.

What Did I Choose?

I’ve always preferred bright, retina-burning color. It just makes me happy. So, when I bought my condo four years ago, I knew adding color was at the top of my to-do list. As much as I would’ve loved to have vibrant colors surrounding me, I knew I needed to mix in some neutrals to achieve the right balance.

I decided to go for it with the bathroom and completely douse it in obnoxious color. And that was the first room our realtor made us paint before listing our condo, of course. Not saying the color choices were the best options in general, but it's what I felt reflected who I was at the time.

Now that we’re selling our condo, it’s time to redefine my color preferences and style all over again. The house we’re hoping to buy is newly painted and completely neutral, including tans and browns in the floor tiles, kitchen, bathrooms, wall paint, and light fixtures. I understand that a neutral home is more appealing to homebuyers. However, because the home we want to buy is newly remodeled and painted, my husband wants to keep it neutral for at least a few years, taking advantage of the work already put into the house. Unfortunately, it’s not even the neutral colors that I prefer, like gray and black.

But I’ve decided to make the best of it and find ways to add color to create the perfect neutral-color combination. Until I can add some vibrant accent walls, I will add pops of color in new ways. New for me, at least. I've been eyeing these for my windows, maybe in the "striped wine" color option.

Now it's your turn. Which do you prefer, neutrals or vibrant colors?

Fascinating Facts about the History of Blinds

by Charlene 31 Jan 2014

Window blinds have been used for thousands of years. Although they started out as purely functional tools, they have transformed to being a combination of style and function. But to understand how window blinds have become what they are today, you must first understand how they began and why they were used.

Ancient Egyptians

It’s believed that wealthy ancient Egyptians, like pharaohs, had woven blinds made from reeds. This was done mainly to limit the view from outsiders. Privacy is still a common reason window blinds are used today. These reed blinds probably also helped keep out some of the heat and the extreme, blinding sunlight, keeping the Egyptian elite more comfortable throughout the long Egyptian summers and dry during their harsh monsoon season.

Chinese Bamboo

The Chinese have used bamboo blinds for many centuries. While many think bamboo blinds or shades are a modern option, they are rooted in Chinese cultural history. The ancient Chinese used them to keep the interiors of their homes cool during the summer. Chinese bamboo blinds were expertly crafted, not haphazardly thrown together.

Korean Bamboo

It’s been said that bamboo blinds became a symbol for the powerful in ancient Korea. This symbol came from one ruler who couldn’t rule without the help of wife. Because of that, he concealed her behind bamboo blinds while she gave him wise advice to make him a great, powerful leader.

Venetian Blinds

It’s argued that Venetian blinds actually didn’t come from Venice originally. They’re believed to have come from Persia, by way of Venice. Just like with all other ancient window blinds, they started as providing privacy and another barrier against nature. Then, they morphed into something more aesthetically pleasing and stylish. In J.L. Gerome Ferris’ 1787 painting called, “The Visit of Paul Jones to the Constitutional Convention,” you can actually see wooden venetian blinds on the top window.

Modern window blinds have come a long way, both in style and functionality, but their history is rich. It will be exciting to see how window blinds improve and morph as years and generations pass.

Why Window Coverings are the Secret Ingredient

by Charlene 28 Jan 2014

Have you ever wished there was a secret ingredient to take your home décor from ordinary and dull to exciting and unique? You don’t have to wish anymore. Window blinds and shades are the secret ingredient to any room, and here’s why:

Light and Privacy Control

Window blinds and shades allow you to control the amount of light that comes into your home. You can choose to leave the blinds or shades wide open, letting in all the natural light or adjusting the shades or blinds to allow some warm light to come through, giving a soft glow to your space. The right amount of light can highlight accents in your home, creating a homey, welcoming vibe throughout your entire house. An added bonus is that you can also control your privacy while letting in the perfect amount of light.

Adds Texture

Sometimes a room just needs a little more texture. Opt for woven or bamboo shades like these to add sophisticated and natural texture. They are subtle enough that it won’t compete with any of your décor, but noticeable enough to add value to your existing décor.

Easily Interchangeable

Want an easy new look? Switch out your window blinds or shades with the season, opting for new colors, fabrics, materials, wood stains, patterns, or styles. Your options are endless, so you can have a whole new look whenever you want it.

Not Just for Windows

You can use window shades and blinds as closet doors or to hide less attractive things from visitors. Window blinds and shades are versatile, so wherever you decide to put them, they’ll look fantastic.

Completely Customizable

Have an odd shaped window? Do you want to make a small space look bigger by exaggerated window coverings? You can do that because window coverings at SelectBlinds.com are customizable. Make the unique statement you want, and do it easily.

These days, window coverings can be whatever you want them to be: understated accents, bold focal points in your decor, or a way to add depth and texture to any space. Creating a Beach-Inspired Bedroom

by Charlene 24 Jan 2014

You don’t have to own a beach house to have a beach-inspired bedroom. You don’t even have to live near a body of water. It simply takes a few unique elements to create a clean, airy, and calm vibe. With beach-inspired décor, keep it subtle. Too many beach-themed items can easily become too much for a room. Instead of a literal beach theme, opt for a figurative theme, giving the vibe but without having to cover the walls with seashells. Simplicity will keep the feel of the room fresh and modern while giving you a relaxing space.

The Right Colors

Use white, blues, light greens, and browns. You can incorporate darker versions of these colors, but make the majority of them light. This is what will give your bedroom an airy feel.

Woven Accents

Woven accents are a great way to incorporate theme-worthy color and interesting texture. Use a few well-placed woven baskets, a woven chair or headboard, or even woven window shades. These accents will bring an earthy feel and help balance out the blues and greens used throughout the bedroom.

Relaxed Bedding

You can control the feel of your bedroom with how you present your bedding. You don’t have to dress a bed to perfected extravagance. Keep it casual. Keep it comfortable. A good rule of thumb for bedding is to make it look effortless. That’s where the relaxed vibe comes from, but make sure it’s done with purpose to avoid simply looking disheveled. Linen bedding just might do the trick.

Wood Furniture

Every piece of furniture in your bedroom doesn’t have to be wood. But just a few prominent wood or driftwood-like pieces can solidify the beach feel without being too overwhelming. Consider incorporating driftwood into a table or even a piece of wall art.

You can find beach inspiration all around you. Don’t be afraid to mix in brighter colors for extra interest or experiment with unique accents and accessories. When you hit the perfect beach-inspired pitch, you’ll know. Then all you have left to do is relax and enjoy your new space.

Tips for Measuring Custom Blinds to Perfection

by Charlene 21 Jan 2014

Windows aren’t created equal, and neither are window blinds. Finding the right fit and color can be a tedious task if you’re not sure where to start. But starting with SelectBlinds makes it easier. All you have to do is find the blinds you like and then measure your windows. If measured correctly, you’ll have blinds that perfectly fit your windows, no matter their sizes. With just a few specialized tips, you can measure for your custom blinds perfectly.

Tip #1: Determine the Mount

Before you can measure, you have to decide whether you want an inside mount or an outside mount. The chosen mount will affect the measurements, so be sure of your decision as you’re measuring. If you’d prefer an inside mount, don’t use the window molding or frame in the final numbers. If you want an outside mount, make sure to measure using the molding, and go out as far as you’d like the window blinds to sit.

Tip #2: Reference the Measuring Guides

Each type of window covering has a unique and specific measuring guide. Thoroughly reading the guide for your custom blinds, whether they’re aluminum, wood, or vertical blinds, will ensure proper measuring for that specific product. Here’s a great resource list. Just pick which mount you want and the type of window coverings you’re measuring for, and the right measuring guide is at your fingertips.

Tip #3: Use a Steel Tape Measure

When you’re ready to measure your windows, opt for a steel tape measure over a cloth or fabric one. A steel measuring tape won’t allow gaps from not being pulled tight enough. A steel tape measure is more apt to give you true measurements. Using steel is also a benefit if you have taller windows because you can measure without always getting a chair or a ladder, depending on the window’s height.

Tip #4: Use a Friend

Using a friend to confirm measurements is a fantastic way to make sure you measured correctly. If you have particularly large or tall windows, have your friend hold one side of the steel tape measure, so you don’t have to try to do it all by yourself.

Tip #5: Write it Down

You may have a good memory, but write those measurements down anyway. It will save you possible measuring hassles in the long run. If you have someone helping, call out the measurements to your friend to write down right away, saving you from having to climb up and down a ladder.

Tip #6: The Rule of Three

To ensure accuracy, measure the height and width of each window three times. When measuring the height, measure the left side, middle, and right side of the window, writing down the measurements as you go. For the width, measure the top, middle, and the bottom. The three window measurements might be different from each other, but there’s nothing to worry about. Next, watch this video. It will tell you which measurements to use.

Measuring for window blinds is easy. With the six tips above, you’ll be well on your way to having the best fit blinds you’ve ever had.

4 Killer Must-Haves for Super Bowl Sunday

by Charlene 17 Jan 2014

The Super Bowl is about good company, great food, and a fantastic game. To have the best Super Bowl viewing experience, you might have to do a bit of planning and preparation. But it will all be worth it on game day. Want a killer Super Bowl Sunday? Here’s what you need:

Game-Worthy TV

Sure, the big game can be watched on any TV or even your phone or computer, and these work great in a pinch, but it’s just not the same. You need a big, beautiful TV so you can see every detail and replay perfectly. You don’t want your guests squinting at the TV. It’s a long game, and your guests will have a headache before halftime at that rate. It’s the perfect time of year to upgrade your TV, even if for the day. If you want a quick, inexpensive fix, rent a big, beautiful flatscreen. You could even have the guests chip in, making it a cheap, easy necessity for the Sunday of all Sundays.

Streaming System

In front of the TV is the best spot to experience the game, but you and your guests won’t stay put the whole time. They’ll be heading to the restroom and maybe to the kitchen to get more food. You can set up a streaming system, plug in a laptop or tablet, and put it in the kitchen. You and your guests won’t miss a single pass or a single play. Your whole house will be football central.

Talking Remote Meat Thermometer

What’s Super Bowl Sunday without the grill getting fired up? Whether you’re cooking steaks or hamburgers, you can keep the talking remote meat thermometer near you, so you know when it’s time to flip and when they’re ready for consumption. This killer gadget allows you more game time in front of the TV, diminishing the need to check the grill over and over, and your steaks and hamburgers will be cooked to perfection.

Glare-Reducing Window Shades

Nothing’s worse than having to move your head back and forth to see the game because the glare is right in the way. While you could pull the curtains and make it dark and cave-like, people still need to see their food, right? But you can have the best of both worlds. Extreme Solar Shades filter the light, so you get the natural light, but you don’t get the glare or the harmful UV rays. They’re also insulated, so they keep out the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. And there you have it: a glare-free Super Bowl Sunday.

Make your Super Bowl party one for the books. Who knows? With all these upgrades, game day might be held at your place every February from now on.

Simplicity is Sophistication When Choosing Window Coverings

by Charlene 14 Jan 2014

Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” He may not have been talking about home décor, but it certainly applies. Decorating your home, no matter the room, can be a hit-and-miss game. You try mixing patterns to create a more dynamic space, but perhaps it turned out too complex or eclectic for your taste. Trends come and go. What is trendy today may look outdated an odd a few years down the road. But while these trends are temporary, you can reach true sophistication and style when you focus on simplicity.

Home décor simplicity can stand the test of time. It can create a space that is the Audrey Hepburn of rooms: stylishly simple and classic. It comes down to that well-known saying, “Less is more.” Perhaps there is more wisdom in those words than we generally give it credit for. Home décor style is closely linked to fashion. You’ll see similar trends and interests circulate through someone’s wardrobe and then their home. So it only makes sense to look at the most famous fashion icons for inspiration, the fashion icons who left a legacy of style and simplicity.

The Fashion Greats

Coco Chanel famously said, “Before you leave the house, take a look in the mirror, and take one thing off.”  The same goes for your home. Instead of cluttering your home with trends and accessories, take a step back and remove an item. Then reevaluate the room and the style you’re conveying. Don’t be afraid to keep things simple.

When Audrey Hepburn was asked how other women could achieve her idolized look, she simply said, “My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses.” With just a few adjustments, any woman could have an Audrey-inspired look. If Audrey were still with us, perhaps she would have offered the same type of advice for your home décor: a few minor changes and simplicity. Simplicity brought an understated elegance and sophistication to Audrey, and it can do the same for your home.

A Starting Point

So how do you now take these long-lasting ideas of simplicity and incorporate them into your home vision? To follow Audrey’s line of thought, start with just a few simple changes:

Window Coverings – Choosing the right blinds or shades for your windows may not seem like a noticeable change. It may be subtle, but it can pull an entire look together. The window blinds you choose should have the right feel. So, if you want a clean rustic feel, consider faux wood shutters to add lightness to a room. For a deeper elegance, try a real wood blind with a dark stain, which would be a great contrast with light-colored décor.

Color Palette – Attaining simplicity doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate color into your décor. It does mean, however, that you should be aware of how that color affects the feel of the room. Color is great, but a little black dress never goes out of style, and both Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn embodied that idea. The trick is finding a color palette that is your home’s little black dress.

From there, you can find new ways to add simplicity and sophistication into your home, whether that’s by making a few small adjustments, like Audrey Hepburn, or taking one thing away, like Coco Chanel.

Winterize Your Windows

by Charlene 10 Jan 2014

Winter is here. And sometimes, winter is harsh and unforgiving. Winter can leave your home cold and drafty, with every bit of warm air escaping as quickly as it can. But there are ways to keep your electric bills low and still have a comfortable, warm home. And the best part is that you have options.

Drapery

When you hear the word “drapery,” you might think of your grandmother’s house, but drapes have been modernized to include interesting and fashionable fabrics and patterns, making them a great, customized fit for every home. With drapes, you can:

  •  Keep the warmth in and block the cold out.
  •  Update your room instantly and create a whole new look with one simple change, with 100s of color, pattern, and fabric options.
  • Add liners for your needs, like blackout and privacy liners.

Honeycomb, Cellular, and Solar Shades

Honeycomb, cellular, and solar shades provide added insulation for your windows, but using these shades doesn’t mean you have to spend your winter in darkness. With these shades, you can:

  • Maintain a comfortable home temperature and block out harmful UV rays.
  •  Choose a blackout shade option for added privacy.
  • Filter and diffuse the bright sunlight to create a warm, inviting glow.
  • Reduce glare, making it perfect for viewing computer and television screens.

Combining both the shades and the drapes can give your home the barrier it needs from the cold. Winterizing is easy. All it takes is a few changes and updates, and you’re looking at a toasty and comfortable winter season inside your home.

Boring Bathroom? Spice It Up with the Right Window Covering

by Charlene 7 Jan 2014

Many people first think of the kitchen or bedroom when it comes to redecorating. Sure, the bathroom is a popular choice for remodeling, but what about decorating? You may have your color scheme and your theme already integrated into your bathroom, but you may have noticed that something is missing, some style, some panache, some flair. Really it comes down to two words: window coverings. The right window covering can take your boring bathroom and give it any vibe you want: modern, traditional, or warm and cozy.

The amount of choices you have can easily leave you overwhelmed, but it doesn’t need to be. Here’s a short breakdown that can help you follow the right decorating path for your lifestyle needs and your vision.

Shutters

If a warm, country feel is what you’re looking for, shutters will be the perfect addition to your bathroom. Shutters are reminiscent of a time past, perhaps a simpler, less hectic time, but they also have a more modern feel than you might expect, so your bathroom won’t look outdated. The combination of traditional and modern will make your bathroom unique and make it feel clean and open.

Bamboo or Woven Shades

Depending on the rest of your décor, bamboo or woven shades can make your bathroom feel rustic and earthy, or pair it with contemporary pieces for a one-of-a-kind look. If the bathroom is bland, a bamboo or woven shade will give the room much-needed texture that can make any bathroom pop. Combining texture, color, and pattern can give your bathroom the panache you’re looking for.

Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades

Want natural light, but you don’t want to sacrifice your privacy? Top Down Bottom Up shades will give you the best of both worlds. The shades can be moved, for instance, halfway down your window so that the top lets in the light, but the bottom of the window is covered appropriately. Or if you want to allow different amounts of light in from each window, these shades allow you to make those adjustments effortlessly. A bonus to using this window shade is energy efficient and keeps your bathroom at a comfortable temperature without using any unnecessary energy. Plus, a cellular shade provides more privacy at night than different types of shades, which is perfect for a bathroom.

Wood or Faux Wood Blinds

With so many color and wood options, like Cherrywood, Honduras Mahogany, or American Walnut, wood blinds can work with any bathroom décor. Using wood blinds, or even faux wood, will give your space a more luxurious feel. And it adds some extra flair. Wood blinds are warm, inviting, and rich, which makes them the perfect addition if you like to relax in the tub after a long day.

Your bathroom doesn’t have to be boring any longer. With the right window covering, it will become your favorite statement room in the house, and the bathroom ambiance can flow into other areas of your house, making you one step closer to your dream home.

SelectBlinds - Our year in review

by AL__-S 18 Dec 2013

Hi. I’m the CEO of SelectBlinds, and I’d like to take a moment of your time to share with you some of the things we implemented in 2013 as a way to help you find the best window covering solutions for your specific need. Please read this with the thought in your mind that that this information sharing is being done as a way to get some feedback from you.

We sell window blinds and window shades, as well as drapery and curtains. Blinds and shades are not like cell phones, computers or televisions. Those types of products have major technological improvements each year. Window coverings do improve, but more so in regards to their fashion correctness, or safety worthiness. Select Blinds confirms our decisions in a very basic way. We present our window covering selection on our website, and based on your buying habits, we make a determination as to the validity of our assortment. So, having said all of that, we’d be thrilled to get your feedback on the following:

Cordless shades

We challenged the window covering engineers to make more products with cordless lift systems. There are two main reasons for this. The first is safety. If there is no cord on your window shade, there is no possible way that a child or pet will get tangled up in it. That is not to say that shades or blinds with lift cords are a hazard. They are not. We have taken precautions to insure that we are offering the safest window coverings possible. The second reason for cordless is fashion. I’m going to go way out on a limb here, and make the comment that there has yet to be a situation where someone has put up new window shades, and had a friend or relative see them and say, “Wow, I really like your new shades, and what an attractive lift cord”.

Lift cords are ok, and they can be wound onto a cord cleat to keep them from just laying out on the floor, but for me, I’ll go cordless, if possible. So, the selectblinds brand offers more products as cordless only, and more products with the cordless option, than ever before.

Partnerships

We have expanded our partnering to include The Good housekeeping label, and the Disney brand. These are both well known and well respected names that are a great way for us to showcase more than just our own highly rated SelectBlinds brand. The Disney shades can be ordered with your child’s favorite Disney character on the face of the roller shade or honeycomb shade. And of course, these shades are only offered with a cordless lift system. Everyone trusts the Good Housekeeping seal, and so far, the results have shown us that our visitors like the label. The SelectBlinds @Home Collection, inspired by the renowned designer, Carriann Johnson, continue to bring fashion forward products to the mix.

Draperies

Window blinds and shades look great by themselves, and all of our window coverings include an attractive head rail, and/or valance. Sometimes you just want more, and draperies are one of the best solutions. We just launched this line in November, and so far the verdict is very positive.

Thanks for allowing me to encroach upon your valuable time. If you are so inclined, please let us know if you believe that we are headed in the right direction, and also let us know what else we can do to make the SelectBlinds on-line store better.

 With sincerity and appreciation,

Al Silverberg, CEO of Select Shops

Should I Choose Faux Wood or Real Wood Blinds?

by Nate K 19 Aug 2013

Two of the most popular products people choose when ordering window treatments are faux wood blinds and wood blinds. It is very difficult to understand the differences between these products and it is my goal to share some insight in to the benefits of each product as well as their optimal utilization.

Benefits of Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood or vinyl blinds are an extremely versatile product. They come in a variety of styles and each style has its benefits. The Express Faux Wood Blinds are a great value and provide a very economical way to get the appearance of a wood blind without the cost of buying real wood blinds. They are very durable and provide a high resistance to moisture. This makes them ideal for bathrooms and areas of the country that experience high level of humidity. There are some retailers selling a foam product which will warp and turn yellow. It is critical that you buy this type of blind from a reputable retailer. The one drawback to these blinds is the weight of the product. They can require significantly more ladders to support the weight and can be heavy to raise when ordered for large windows.

The Polymer Wood Blinds are manufactured from a combination of real wood and engineered poly-thermal material. This product is the most durable type of faux wood blinds and provides the best UV protection of any product on the market today. This product is fantastic in environments with temperature extremes like the desert southwest and the cold northeast. This product is also the most humidity resistant faux wood blind available online today. This product is heavy and will require more ladders for support, but if durability is what you want, this is the product for you.

Benefits of Real Wood Blinds

Real wood blinds are still extremely popular and for many people there is no substitute to the warmth they can provide a room. They are much lighter than faux wood and require far fewer ladders giving you a more uniform look in a house with varying window sizes. Wood can warp in high humidity areas where faux wood proves to be a much better performing option to cover your windows. Wood blinds also tend to struggle with high UV exposure and can fade over time. If you live in an environment where this is a concern and want the timeless look of real wood blinds you will want to buy Deep Wood Blinds. This product is the most durable, warp, and scratch resistant product available today. These blinds are even manufactured to resist dust which will require significantly less time with that feather duster.

This is one of the rare instances in decorating that there is a product for all environments. Faux Wood Blinds and Wood Blinds come with great decorating options like cloth tapes to add a touch of flair. The most important thing is to make sure you are happy with the color and texture of the blinds before you buy them. Thankfully, SelectBlinds.com offers free sample swatches which allow you the opportunity to touch and see the product up close. They also provide the industries best lifetime warranty with every order. Always remember to have fun in your decorating and choose the product that best fits you and your home.

Select Blinds Reviews - Why This Company is Great to Work For

by Lisa Hs 26 Jul 2013

Work is work, right? Another day, another dollar. Let's face it, there are very few people that can actually claim that they love their jobs and the company that they work for. I have to admit though, after coming to work at Select Blinds, it is refreshing to work for a company that actually cares about their customer and people as a whole.

As a retailer, the company can boast about their new Google Trusted Store "A" rating for reliability and excellent service, or their Better Business Bureau accreditation and A+ rating. But really, when I am shopping online for products, I am not always interested in what the "company" is saying about themselves. What sets Select Blinds apart from other custom window covering companies is the amount of positive 3rd party reviews that the company has collected over the years from ACTUAL customers, who are excited enough about their purchase to take the time to write a helpful review for other people looking to make the same purchase.

SelectBlinds.com really is the highest rated and most reviewed blinds company in America. It is obvious online when you look at websites like:

Google Checkout (over 5,250 reviews!) "Awesome! Their service was quick and efficient. Even when I had mismeasured and called to correct my order, they were very courteous."

Reseller Ratings (over 3,500 reviews!) "Great looking, easy to install, directions to measure were spot on."

Price Grabber (over 2,500 reviews!) "Great quality and a great price! I shopped around and this was by far the best company."

Nextag (over 1,350 reviews!) "Expected good for the price. GOT outstanding for the price!"

After working closely with our customer service team, I can see why the site has gotten such great reviews. Of course the company is proud of their high quality products, but the best sign of a good company is the happiness of their customers. So, while it may be a job.. and WORK.. watching the attention and care that is given to site visitors and customers makes me feel like I am doing something valuable. And I appreciate that!

How to Open Up a Small Bedroom

by Chris S 27 Jun 2013

Your bedroom is supposed to be the place where you can shut the door and escape to your own private refuge, but if you’re dealing with a small space, it can be difficult to fully relax and breathe deep. Not all houses come equipped with grand master bedrooms, but don’t lose hope just yet; there are many tricks and resources you can utilize that will help open up your bedroom and allow it to transform into the safe haven it’s meant to be.

Bring in the Light

A small room with poor lighting is bound to feel like a closed-in cave, so be generous with the light you’re utilizing. If you have a window, avoid covering it with dark curtains or shades, but instead, consider investing in a decorative set of blinds. Wooden blinds add a sophisticated touch, but unlike curtains, they allow you to have complete control over the amount of light you’re bringing in. Natural light creates a fresh and open feeling in any room, so try and maximize any sunlight that’s available.

For evening hours and cloudy days, you can still have access to natural looking lighting by replacing a few of your incandescent bulbs with halogen bulbs (they produce the most sun-like glow). The right set-up of lamps, sconces, or chandeliers can make a room appear much larger than it really is. The trick is to make sure the room is evenly lit to avoid dark shadows from occupying certain corners of the room.

Stick to Light Colors

If your room is already small, a dark color scheme will add to the claustrophobic experience, so stick to light, airy colors. Pastels work great in helping a room feel more expansive, so find a combination of lighter shades of greens, creams, blues, or purples that you like and keep those in mind when you pick out paints, linens, furniture, and décor.

Organize and Decorate Vertically

Decorating vertically allows a room to appear to have more depth, so always try and decorate from top to bottom instead of side to side. A tall, vertical mirror is a great choice to place in a small room because it will help reflect any light which creates an illusion of a bigger space.

Vertical tapestries, paintings, and family portraits are other options that that will help add a comfortable touch to your personal space, but it’s imperative to avoid adding too many ornaments to your room as this will create a congested feel that will defeat the purpose of your original intention.

Minimize to Open

A small room packed full of furniture, decorations, and clutter is going to appear even tinier than it already is, so take a minimalist’s approach to your bedroom. As mentioned before, decorate sparingly, but also reduce the amount of furniture you’re bringing it; try only allow room for your bed, a vertical bookshelf, a nightstand, a dresser(if that can’t fit in your closet), and if it’s absolutely needed, a chair for reading or lounging. If you have a TV, consider trying to hang it up on your wall so that you can avoid a TV stand in the middle of the room. Lastly, never let your room get too cluttered with dirty laundry, dishes, or any other odds and ends that easily find their way onto the floor. A clean and tidy space always appears larger than one that’s unorganized and messy.

Just because you happen to have a small bedroom to work with doesn’t mean it can’t be a space for you to feel free, open, and more importantly, relaxed. By using some lighting and color tricks, as well as keeping up with a minimalistic and vertical approach to decorating, you’ll have no problem turning your bedroom into a larger and more comfortable paradise where you can unwind and de-stress.

Wood Woven Shades

by Chris S 24 Jun 2013

I want to commend Select Blinds for doing a top notch job in all respects. I ordered woven wood shades and they were absolutely beautiful. I made a mistake in measuring and used the fit guarantee to send them back. Select Blinds re-cut them at no charge and sent them back to me, also at no charge. Amazing, amazing customer service. I'm on the website now to order more shades. You will love dealing with this company.

Just installed aluminum mini-blinds on two bathroom windows...soooo easy! I loved that I didn't have to do any fancy math to measure...just send you the measurements and go! After installing them, my husband, the reluctant installer, said "they sure are making blinds easier to install than I remember!". Yes, these were so simple and the brackets are completely hidden behind the top rail. Love, love, love this product!

How to Clean Your Window Blinds the Quick and Easy Way

by Chris S 10 Jun 2013

clean your window blinds to make them last longer

Although most of us remember to clean our windows regularly, we often forget about our window blinds. Regular cleaning will keep them looking and working like new; however, this is a chore most people would rather avoid. The secret is to keep dust and grime from building up over time, creating a layer that is tough to remove. When it comes to keeping window blinds clean, prevention is the best tool, so make it part of your regular weekly housecleaning.

Know Your Blinds

Window blind manufacturers create instructions for a reason, so read them carefully and follow the cleaning tips that come with them. Also, look for specific tips and recommendations, so you’ll avoid any potential problems down the road. Manufacturers test their guidelines and can give you the best advice available on how to care for your blinds. As a rule, give your blinds a thorough cleaning every four months, or at the very least, twice a year.

Grandma’s Green Cleaning Method

If your grandmother is like mine, she uses vinegar for everything, including cleaning window blinds. Here’s how:

  • Fill a small bowl with white vinegar and find a pair of clean cotton gloves or socks.
  • Put your hand inside one of the gloves or socks and dip the tip of the sock, or your fingers into the bowl.
  • Run your hand or fingers along each slat to remove the dust and grime. You may need to rinse the sock or glove a few times.
  • Switch back and forth between the two socks or gloves, soaking one sock or glove while you use the other.

Important: Although this method is safe for most materials, do not oversaturate the blinds, especially if they are wooden. Water warps wood, so squeeze as much out as possible and dry immediately. Avoid letting the vinegar come into contact with your eyes or skin.

Material Matters

It’s important to know what your blinds are made of, and then to clean them accordingly. Here are some material-specific tips:

  • Wooden Blinds – Excess moisture is wood’s worst enemy, so avoid getting wooden blinds wet. To dust them, use a clean, soft cloth, a feather duster or a vacuum brush. To put more life into the wood, use a cleaner made specifically for wood, such as lemon oil. Reading the manufacturer’s guidelines is more important than ever with wooden blinds, so check to see what products the company recommends before you use anything on them. Run a dryer sheet along each slat to keep dust and grime from sticking.
  • Faux Wood Blinds – Faux wood blinds are the easiest to clean, because they are durable and resist warping. You can dust them just as you do wooden blinds, but you can also spot clean them using a mild detergent with warm water on a slightly moistened cloth, blotting dry afterwards. Use a dryer sheet to keep dust at bay.
  • Vinyl and Aluminum Blinds – Dust often and spot clean stains with mild detergent using warm water and then blot them dry. Tilt the slats up and down slightly to dust both sides, moving along each slat. Avoid pressing down too hard, so you don’t bend or break them. If the dirt is hard to remove, take the blinds off the window and soak them in a bathtub filled with warm, soapy water. Rinse them and wipe dry, or hang them and leave them open to air dry.
  • Fabric Vertical Blinds – Dust often with a vacuum brush to avoid build up. Spot clean as directed using a clear detergent to avoid staining, then blog dry. Although you cannot immerse them in water, check the manufacturer’s recommendations to see if you can have them dry cleaned.

Regular cleaning according to the manufacturer’s guidelines will keep your blinds looking as beautiful as the day you got them, as long as you take special care and clean on a regular basis. By avoiding dirt and dust buildup, it will be easy to give them a quick cleaning whenever you clean the rest of your home.

Brand Name Window Blinds for your Home

by AL__-S 28 May 2013

Window coverings are purchased less often than a new car. When buying a new car you normally start with the brand. If you want a new Cadillac, you don’t go to a Chevrolet dealer. We all have some perception of what each car brand stands for. Window coverings have brands as well. But really, who knows what each brand stands for. I’m a 34-year-old man and I shopped for window coverings for the first time in my life just last week. What an eye-opening experience.

Brand Name Window Coverings

I’m not as savvy as a teenager when it comes to computers, but I know how to shop online. So to the home office went I, in search of the right window coverings for my new house. I found certain brands that I was familiar with like Levolor, but discovered that just like cars, these window blinds brands do not address all types of window coverings.

I cruised through several sites that sold national brands as well as their own brand. In most cases, their own brand was just a generic version with less features than the national brands that they also carried. All in all, those sites confused me more than anything.

I did visit one site, SelectBlinds.com, that carried only their own brand. At first I hesitated to dig deeply into their offerings because I never heard of SelectBlinds. There were a couple things about their website that brought me back a second time and then a third. First of all, they claim to be the most reviewed, highest rated brand on the Internet. Do a Google search for window blinds or window shades and you’ll see that the claim is true. They have more reviews than all of their competitors combined. So just for kicks I started putting together an order. Much to my surprise, they fulfilled every window covering need that I had.

Real Basswood wood blinds went into my home office. A faux wood blind covered a window in my garage. Honeycomb shades in a blackout fabric went into my bedroom. I’m a single guy now, but I was married, and have a little girl. So obviously I have a bedroom for her, and I found a Disney window shade for her room. Every single window covering that I ordered was comparable or better than any national brand, including Hunter Douglas, that I could find on any other site.

I was still not sure that I was going to buy from SelectBlinds, and had a couple questions regarding inside mount versus outside mount. So I called their customer care department. They answered the phone, they were courteous, they knew their stuff, and helped with the last couple of issues I was unclear on.

Buying blinds is not a fast endeavor. I had spent approximately 2 hours measuring, ordering, on the phone with customer service, and creating an account. So I figured what the heck, put in my Amex number, and placed my order.

All of the blinds showed up within two or three days of each other, and I hung them myself. All in all it was a really satisfying experience. In my opinion SelectBlinds.com is the number one brand of window coverings on the Internet. Come to my house and you’ll see why.
