Best Window Treatments for Large Windows

by Charlene 12 Aug 2014

Large windows are beautiful and let in a lot of natural light, but they can also be difficult to cover. If you don't choose the right window coverings, it can be impossible to lift and the weight of the window coverings for the large window can cause damage and bowing.

Let us take the mystery out of window coverings for large windows. It's easy once you know what you're looking for.

Continuous Cord Loops

Blinds and shades with a continuous cord loop lift system are great for large windows. Because of the lift mechanism, you'll be able to raise and lower your window coverings easily and evenly. You won't have to worry about one side lowering or raising faster than the other side. Your blinds or shades will look great and last longer.

Multiple Blinds on One Headrail

Another option to consider for large windows is one headrail with two or three blinds. This will give you full coverage, but let you operate the individual shades or blinds separately. Installing multiple blinds on one headrail will eliminate the bowing problem that can accompany heavy window coverings.

Lighter Materials

A good rule of thumb for covering large windows is to choose lighter materials, like single cell honeycomb shades, real wood blinds, and sheer shades. The lighter the window coverings, the less bowing will occur and the easier it will be to use. Of course you want your window coverings to look nice, but you also want them perfectly functional, and lighter materials will help you have both.

Just because you have large windows doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style for functionality. Here at Select Blinds, you can choose the look you want and make it a perfect fit for your larger-than-life windows.

2 Shades in 1 - A Detailed Look at the 1/2" Day/Night Cordless Cellular Shades

by Charlene 1 Aug 2014

Did you know you can get two blinds in one? It's true. With our 1/2" Day/Night Cordless Cellular Shades, you get both a light filtering shade and a blackout shade, all with one install.

How it Works

The Day/Night Cellular Shades consist of a very long shade, half being light filtering and half being blackout. This allows you to switch between the two. When the shade is completely raised, the light filtering section is stacked on top of the blackout shade.

If you want light filtering, simply pull down on the light filtering handle. It will condense the blackout shade at the very bottom. If you want the blackout shade, pull up on the handle and push the light filtering section to the top of the shade.

You don't have to choose from light filtering and blackout, however. You can use both at once. Customize your light blockage by adjusting the sections of the shade however you want.

Best Places to Use Them

You can use the Day/Night Shades in every room of your house, but they are particularly beneficial in these spaces:

Bedrooms

Just because you like to sleep in complete darkness doesn't mean you want it that way when you're not sleeping. With this cell shade, you can use the blackout section at night and the light filtering section during the day. That way, you room is still bathed with beautiful natural light when it counts the most.

Media Rooms

No one likes a glare on the television when trying to enjoy a movie. While the light filtering shade does help reduce the glare, just having light in the room can make it just as annoying. So, why not lower that blackout shade while you're enjoying your favorite movie? Then when you want to have a family get-together, just use the light filtering shade to retain your privacy but also give your home that beautiful natural light.

My Own Home

I have the 1/2" Day/Night Cordless Cellular Shades in my own home - in my family room, to be exact. My husband loves them because he can watch sports without the glare, since the windows sit directly across from the television. I love them because I can make them light filtering whenever he's not watching sports.
After using them, I wish I got them for the rest of the windows in my home. They're fantastic!

Have you tried the two shades in one? Do you love them?

Father's Day Gift Guide - Think Outside the Box

by Charlene 10 Jun 2014

Father's Day is a time to celebrate, honor, and thank all those father figures in our lives. It isn't always easy being a father, and it's time to think of those men and fathers who have made a difference in our lives. One way to show that love and appreciation is through a thoughtful gift.

Not sure what to get the fathers in your life? It might be time to think outside the ordinary. It's time to leave those ties, wallets, and tools on the shelves. This Father's Day is all about comfort, convenience, and style.

1 - Give the Gift of Undisturbed TV Time

Do the fathers in your life like to kick back, relax, and watch TV every once in a while? If there's a window in the TV or even computer room, solar shades are a must. Solar shades get rid of the glare on the screen, so your father can enjoy his favorite movie or television show even more, without that annoying glare. And you don't even have to choose a blackout option to get the best viewing experience. Depending on the solar shade you choose, your father can still retain the view to the outside and let natural light filter through.

2 - Give the Gift of a Better Night's Sleep

If your father prefers sleeping in near-complete darkness and wakes up at the first glimmer of light coming through the window, then blackout window shades are the perfect gift. A well-rested dad means a happy dad.

3 - Give the Gift of Saving Money on Energy Costs

Energy costs in the summer can be brutal. Instead of letting your father sweat it out this summer as he tries to keep money in his pocket, upgrade his current window coverings to honeycomb shades. With their cell construction, honeycomb shades add another layer of insulation, keeping the heat out. A cool, comfortable home is now within reach, and all within budget. What father wouldn't love that?

4 - Give the Gift of Modern Convenience

Have you ever sat down but forgot to adjust the window coverings? Maybe the light is shining right in your eyes or you have high windows in your home and you can't manually adjust them. Chances are the fathers in your life have experienced it, too. So why not give the gift of modern convenience with motorized blinds and shades? Controlled with a remote, your father could tilt or even open or close the blinds without ever leaving the couch. Talk about convenient.

5 - Give the Gift of Team Loyalty

Whether your father, your husband, or your father-in-law loves baseball, football, or basketball, you can find sports bedding to match. Nothing says team loyalty than having a team-inspired space, whether it's the bedroom or the man cave.

See? Buying unique gifts for your father isn't hard at all. As much as he loves the ties you buy him, maybe it's time to get creative and give him a gift that he can enjoy for many years to come.

The Perfect Window Coverings for Summer

by Charlene 9 May 2014

There are a lot of great, easy ways to prepare your home for summer. You can swap out throw pillows, change your bedding to lighter fabrics, and switching your area rugs to lighter, brighter ones. But there's another change you can make for summer that can update your home's look and even save you money. It all comes down to your window coverings. With the right choice in window coverings, you can save money each month and have a more comfortable home interior all summer long. So how do you know which window coverings are right for your home? To make the selection easier, we've broken it down for you.

Cellular Shades

Also called honeycomb shades, cellular shades add another layer of insulation to keep the heat outside where it belongs. The honeycomb structure not only keeps the heat from coming in, but it also filters or blacks out the natural light, which only blocks out even more heat. If you don't like the idea of blacking out the majority of light, you can still have natural light and a more comfortable home. That's the beauty of cellular shades. You can have the best of both worlds.

Pleated Shades

Pleated shades give you the look of cellular shades, but with a little less insulation. If you live in a location that doesn't get too warm in the summer, these are the perfect option. They still provide insulation, so don't feel as though you're missing out by choosing pleated shades. They look great and they serve their purpose.

Solar Shades

One of the many benefits of solar shades during the summer is that you can still have your view outside, even with your shades drawn. It also blocks harmful UV rays and it will protect your furniture from sun damage and unnecessary fading. Or, you always have the option to choose blackout solar shades, which would be perfect in bedrooms and media rooms.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice style for summer functionality. And now you don't have to. Stay cool, comfortable, and stylish this summer.

How to Clean Your Window Shades

by Charlene 21 Mar 2014

We've already discussed cleaning your window blinds, so now it's time to tackle cleaning your window shades. At first you may think you can use the same techniques as cleaning wood or faux wood blinds, but there are specific ways to clean specific types of shades, including honeycomb, solar, and even bamboo shades. Using the incorrect cleaning method can actually damage your shades, so here's what you need to know:

Honeycomb/Cellular Shades

Regular cleaning of your cellular shades is important. Without it, they can develop a yellowish tint. Regularly vacuum the shades with the brush attachment. Make sure to be gentle and not tug on the shades. You want to keep the honeycombs looking nice. You can also dust the shades to keep the dust from accumulating. If you see that dust has gotten into the middle of the cells, use a blow dryer to get it out. But only use it on the softest, lowest air flow and only use cool air, never warm or hot. The most important thing to remember is be gentle.

Solar Shades

Many of the solar shades we offer here at Select Blinds are resistant to both mold and moisture. So that means you can use a damp cloth to clean them, both the front and the back, and you won't have any problems. You can also use a feather duster or a brush attachment on your vacuum, but a damp cloth will be your best, most effective bet for solar shades.

Bamboo Shades

No water should be used on bamboo or woven shades at all. This will cause ample irreversible damage. Instead, limit yourself to a light dusting or very light vacuuming with the brush attachment. Too much pressure or moisture on the bamboo shades can break the natural fibers apart, eventually causing droops and gaps.

Roman Shades

Because roman shades are made of fabric, it's generally OK to spot clean using a damp rag and gentle detergent or soap. However, be mindful of the type of fabric of your roman shades, like those made of silk or other delicate materials. You can also use a duster and the brush vacuum attachment for a light cleaning.

Keeping your window shades clean and looking fresh is easy. With the right cleaning technique, you'll be able to maintain that new look you had when you first installed them. It will also prolong the life of your shades, so you'll get the most use for your money, all while keeping your shades looking great!

The Perfect Window Coverings for Your Breakfast Nook

by Charlene 11 Mar 2014

It doesn't matter whether your breakfast nook is perfect for two or spacious enough for an entire family. You can create a lovely, calming space. One major component of the ideal breakfast nook is the natural morning light shining through the windows. So choosing the right window covering is crucial to creating the right ambiance for your breakfast nook. You don't want to just cover up the windows. You want to accentuate and control the natural light, creating a radiant little nook.

Honeycomb Shades

If the morning sun through your window is too bright, honeycomb shades will help you filter the light so you get the soft, warm glow without having to squint while eating breakfast. Honeycomb shades also add insulation to your window, so you can sit comfortably without the hot summer sun heating up the room or the cold winter weather making your home too chilly. These are also great options if your breakfast nook window faces the street or a public area, so you can have privacy and still have light filtering through.

Solar Shades

Select solar shades let you have your privacy, keep the heat out, and let you maintain your view to the outside. Solar shades are perfect if you live in a particularly sunny location or if the morning sun hits your windows just right. Solar shades are designed to reduce glare, so you don't have to worry about facing the window and having the sun in your eyes or the sun reflecting off a metallic tabletop. But you'll still get great light and keep your awesome view.

Shutters

Want a more classic, traditional look for your breakfast nook? Shutters are the way to go. From folding shutters to café style shutters, you'll create a beautiful, breezy feel to your little nook. Depending on the amount of natural light that you have on that side of the house, faux wood shutters might be your best option. They are more durable than real wood and are great in heat and in direct sunlight.

Sheer Shades

Sheer shades are a great way to showcase your windows. They are stylish and modern, and they're well-designed for functionality. You have a choice between light filtering and room darkening, but for a breakfast nook, you still want that natural light, just not all of it at once. Sheer shades are light and whimsical, and they can give a clean feeling to your space.

Bamboo Shades

Give your breakfast nook a unique look with bamboo shades. Without a liner, these shades let ample light through. If you want some light, but you still want your privacy, simply add a privacy liner. Bamboo shades are perfect in any modern or contemporary home. They have a way of meshing well with almost any décor style.

Make your breakfast nook your new favorite place in your home. And it all comes down to which window coverings you use.

Which one is your favorite breakfast nook look?

Using Window Coverings as Closet Doors

by Charlene 25 Feb 2014

Looking for an easy way to spice up any room? It can be as simple as thinking outside the box when it comes to your closet doors. Traditional closet doors are great, but you can change the entire look of your room by using window coverings instead. Using curtains, blinds, or shades as your closet doors can give your room a more elegant, sophisticated, and even modern look and feel. And some of the great things about using window coverings are that they’re versatile, stylish, and easy to use for all ages. Find your style muse in these examples:

Curtains

With the right draping, curtains can look soft and elegant or bold and act as a statement piece. Curtains are great for closet doors because you can pull them open to showcase your organized closet or pull the closed to give the illusion of organization without the required effort.  Out of all your window covering options for closet doors, curtains give you the most design choices, including patterns, colors, textures, and fabrics.

Roman Shades

With roman shades, you get the look of curtains but with usefulness of traditional blinds and shades. You can raise them all the way to give a nice frame to the top of the closet or you could lower them halfway for more closet coverage. When you need to, you can let them down completely. Roman shades give you the ability to choose the look you want when you want. You can further customize your look by choosing from one of the four available folds: European, flat, hobbled, and classic.

Roller Shades

These are also easy to use, which makes them perfect for a child’s room. You can raise and lower according to your needs. It really is as easy as that. You can choose from different patterns and colors to make it fun, exciting, and lighthearted. You could even choose Disney roller shades to add a little oomph to your child’s room.

Woven Shades

Want a more natural feel with lots of texture? Woven shades are the answer. This will give a fun, modern, and rustic vibe, which is perfect for a contemporary home or even a teenager’s room. Make your closet and your space unique. Woven shades are the perfect way to do that. If you like the look of roman shades, but you want natural texture, woven shades actually raise and lower just like roman shades, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Paneled Vertical Blinds

Traditional vertical blinds are a great choice, but paneled vertical blinds are better suited to be used as closet doors. The panels are much wider than the traditional vanes, and it create a cohesive streamlined look.

Show your closet some love with new, modern closet doors. Closet doors don’t have to blend into the walls anymore. Make a statement that reflects your personality. And if you ever want a new look, simply swap them with something new. For double closet doors, you'll need to use multiple shades on one headrail, but that's easy to do.

Choosing the Right Cell Size for Honeycomb Shades

by Charlene 21 Feb 2014

Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are modern, energy efficient, and stylish. But knowing which cell size is right for your windows can be tricky. Ordering the wrong cell size can lessen its energy-saving efficiency, look wrong in the window, and even cause damage to the shade itself. Don’t let that overwhelm you. Figuring out the right cell size is easy. Here’s what you need to know.

Double versus Single Cell

Double cell honeycomb shades offer more insulation, saving you even more money on energy costs. However, this also means the shades are much heavier than their one-cell counterpart. Choosing double cell shades for a large window can make it difficult and too heavy to operate. As a result, it can cause cord strain and even some bowing because of its weight. So, leave double cell shades for small to midsized windows.

Single cell honeycomb shades are obviously much lighter, as was already mentioned. Even though they provide less insulation than the double cells, they still are great options if you want added insulation. No matter if you choose a cellular shade with single or double cells, you’ll still get the same great look and the same great benefits, just to different degrees.

Small Cell Sizes

Smaller cells mean the pleats are narrower, which makes it perfect for a smaller window. Our smallest cell size is 3/8”. Using small cell shades for big windows can make it look chaotic because of the excessive number of cells and pleats. If you have a narrow window sill, go with small cell shades so they fit naturally.

Medium Cell Sizes

If you have a medium-sized window and are looking for a cellular shade that reflects that size, go with 1/2" or 9/16” cell sizes. These sizes are the most popular because they provide good balance for all sizes of window, all without being too overwhelming.

Large windows should be covered with 3/4" single cell shades. Because of the distance these shades will need to cover, you want to make sure they will be light enough so they won’t need extra support and that they’re still easy to use. This cell size is also great aesthetically because of its large pleats, bringing refinement and sophistication to any large window. If you have deeper window sills, choose large cell shades to make use of all that space.

Why Window Coverings are the Secret Ingredient

by Charlene 28 Jan 2014

Have you ever wished there was a secret ingredient to take your home décor from ordinary and dull to exciting and unique? You don’t have to wish anymore. Window blinds and shades are the secret ingredient to any room, and here’s why:

Light and Privacy Control

Window blinds and shades allow you to control the amount of light that comes into your home. You can choose to leave the blinds or shades wide open, letting in all the natural light or adjusting the shades or blinds to allow some warm light to come through, giving a soft glow to your space. The right amount of light can highlight accents in your home, creating a homey, welcoming vibe throughout your entire house. An added bonus is that you can also control your privacy while letting in the perfect amount of light.

Adds Texture

Sometimes a room just needs a little more texture. Opt for woven or bamboo shades like these to add sophisticated and natural texture. They are subtle enough that it won’t compete with any of your décor, but noticeable enough to add value to your existing décor.

Easily Interchangeable

Want an easy new look? Switch out your window blinds or shades with the season, opting for new colors, fabrics, materials, wood stains, patterns, or styles. Your options are endless, so you can have a whole new look whenever you want it.

Not Just for Windows

You can use window shades and blinds as closet doors or to hide less attractive things from visitors. Window blinds and shades are versatile, so wherever you decide to put them, they’ll look fantastic.

Completely Customizable

Have an odd shaped window? Do you want to make a small space look bigger by exaggerated window coverings? You can do that because window coverings at SelectBlinds.com are customizable. Make the unique statement you want, and do it easily.

These days, window coverings can be whatever you want them to be: understated accents, bold focal points in your decor, or a way to add depth and texture to any space. by Charlene 10 Jan 2014

Winter is here. And sometimes, winter is harsh and unforgiving. Winter can leave your home cold and drafty, with every bit of warm air escaping as quickly as it can. But there are ways to keep your electric bills low and still have a comfortable, warm home. And the best part is that you have options.

When you hear the word “drapery,” you might think of your grandmother’s house, but drapes have been modernized to include interesting and fashionable fabrics and patterns, making them a great, customized fit for every home. With drapes, you can:

  •  Keep the warmth in and block the cold out.
  •  Update your room instantly and create a whole new look with one simple change, with 100s of color, pattern, and fabric options.
  • Add liners for your needs, like blackout and privacy liners.

Honeycomb, Cellular, and Solar Shades

Honeycomb, cellular, and solar shades provide added insulation for your windows, but using these shades doesn’t mean you have to spend your winter in darkness. With these shades, you can:

  • Maintain a comfortable home temperature and block out harmful UV rays.
  •  Choose a blackout shade option for added privacy.
  • Filter and diffuse the bright sunlight to create a warm, inviting glow.
  • Reduce glare, making it perfect for viewing computer and television screens.

Combining both the shades and the drapes can give your home the barrier it needs from the cold. Winterizing is easy. All it takes is a few changes and updates, and you’re looking at a toasty and comfortable winter season inside your home.

Boring Bathroom? Spice It Up with the Right Window Covering

by Charlene 7 Jan 2014

Many people first think of the kitchen or bedroom when it comes to redecorating. Sure, the bathroom is a popular choice for remodeling, but what about decorating? You may have your color scheme and your theme already integrated into your bathroom, but you may have noticed that something is missing, some style, some panache, some flair. Really it comes down to two words: window coverings. The right window covering can take your boring bathroom and give it any vibe you want: modern, traditional, or warm and cozy.

The amount of choices you have can easily leave you overwhelmed, but it doesn’t need to be. Here’s a short breakdown that can help you follow the right decorating path for your lifestyle needs and your vision.

Shutters

If a warm, country feel is what you’re looking for, shutters will be the perfect addition to your bathroom. Shutters are reminiscent of a time past, perhaps a simpler, less hectic time, but they also have a more modern feel than you might expect, so your bathroom won’t look outdated. The combination of traditional and modern will make your bathroom unique and make it feel clean and open.

Bamboo or Woven Shades

Depending on the rest of your décor, bamboo or woven shades can make your bathroom feel rustic and earthy, or pair it with contemporary pieces for a one-of-a-kind look. If the bathroom is bland, a bamboo or woven shade will give the room much-needed texture that can make any bathroom pop. Combining texture, color, and pattern can give your bathroom the panache you’re looking for.

Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades

Want natural light, but you don’t want to sacrifice your privacy? Top Down Bottom Up shades will give you the best of both worlds. The shades can be moved, for instance, halfway down your window so that the top lets in the light, but the bottom of the window is covered appropriately. Or if you want to allow different amounts of light in from each window, these shades allow you to make those adjustments effortlessly. A bonus to using this window shade is energy efficient and keeps your bathroom at a comfortable temperature without using any unnecessary energy. Plus, a cellular shade provides more privacy at night than different types of shades, which is perfect for a bathroom.

Wood or Faux Wood Blinds

With so many color and wood options, like Cherrywood, Honduras Mahogany, or American Walnut, wood blinds can work with any bathroom décor. Using wood blinds, or even faux wood, will give your space a more luxurious feel. And it adds some extra flair. Wood blinds are warm, inviting, and rich, which makes them the perfect addition if you like to relax in the tub after a long day.

Your bathroom doesn’t have to be boring any longer. With the right window covering, it will become your favorite statement room in the house, and the bathroom ambiance can flow into other areas of your house, making you one step closer to your dream home.

Ready your Home for the Holidays

by AL__-S 3 Dec 2012

Update your blinds for Christmas

Do you have holiday guests staying with you this season?

If so, you probably are freaking out a little bit about making sure that your house is going to look as good as possible. And unless you have just redecorated, you know that there is some room for improvement. Well time is running out, and the things that you can do to ready your home for company, shrinks with every passing hour.

Window coverings. What a great idea! Transform your home with new window blinds and window shades and accomplish more than just impressing your company, which you will surely do. New window coverings are a good idea for several reasons. Please allow me to share some thoughts.

Window shades give the entire room a feeling of transformation. The visual impact of going from a horizontal blind, whether a real wood bind, mini blind, or faux wood blind, to a fabric shade, such as a Roman shade or honeycomb shade, is impactful.

Window blinds and shades are easy to change out. Each window covering can be replaced in a matter of minutes, and unlike new wallpaper or paint, changing the window coverings requires no prep work. Either one, paint or wallpaper, will require so much more time to prep than the required brackets being changed in order to hang new shades. Plus new paint will smell up your house for a period of time.

The visually pleasing impact and the ease of installation are enough in the way of reasons to make a change to your window coverings, but there is more. Energy efficiency will likely be better than your current situation, making the new window covering idea even more appealing. If you already have a fabric window shade installed, the impact might be negligible, but if you are going from a horizontal blind to a fabric shade, there will be a positive difference.

It all sounds good, right? I know what you’re thinking . Thanks for the tip, but it must be too late to order window fashions for delivery by Christmas. For the most part, this is true, but at SelectBlinds.com you can order with a guaranteed delivery by Christmas, or FREE!! So get those windows measured, jump on-line, and visit www.selectblinds.com.

Use Window Shades for Energy Efficiency

by AL__-S 15 Oct 2012

Double Cell Blackout Shades for Energy Efficiency

Window shades provide a certain level of energy efficiency. Energy efficiency, in the case of window shades, relates to two main benefits, which are summarized here, in the order of how they affect you.

Energy Efficient Window Shades

  1. Cover your window with an insulating window shade, and the first thing you will notice, when standing by the window, is that you are not feeling the weather outside. Honeycomb shades are good insulating window coverings, and the double cell honeycomb shades are better at insulating, than the single cell shades. The insulating benefit is realized in every season. The window shade, whether it’s a room darkening shade, or a blackout shade, will provide the insulating, energy efficiency, from both the heat and the cold.
  2. The second noticeable benefit of a window shade is true energy efficiency. To varying degrees, depending on the construction of the shade, your energy costs will be less than if you did not have a window shade covering that window. This is true even if your window is covered with a real wood blind. Window blinds are great, and I have several in my home, but a real basswood wood blind will be trumped in the insulation factor, by a cellular shade, every time.

Window shades offer benefits beyond energy efficiency, including privacy and light control. And for the record, a window blind is not the same thing as a window shade. Both are window coverings, but a shade is made of a fabric material, and a blind is made of a more solid material, like wood or faux wood, or even aluminum. Another characteristic of a window blind is that it will have slats. Horizontal blinds have horizontal slats, and vertical blinds have, well you know, vertical slats.

Winter is fast approaching, so if there are drafty areas in your home, that are originating at a window, now is a good time to consider changing your window covering for an energy efficient, insulating window shade.

Is it Time to Update those Window Coverings?

by Chris S 7 Sep 2012

Window coverings is a great term. It is very descriptive, in that you know exactly what it means. Window coverings, simply put, cover your window. At the same time, window coverings is an incredibly vague term. One could be talking about blackout blinds, or one could be talking about draperies. I speak from personal experience here, as I actually searched for new window coverings recently. Let me get to the end result, and then share some facts about the word window coverings. If you’re shopping for custom blinds and shades, do it online, and go directly to SelectBlinds.com. They have virtually every window covering product that you could possibly need, other than draperies.

Blinds vs. Shades

Blinds and shades is another example of a phrase that is both very descriptive, and very vague. If you yourself are using the term, you obviously know to what you are referring. But it is entirely possible that someone else could be confused. Are you looking for blinds, or are you looking for shades. And if you are looking for blinds, are they custom blinds, which are made utilizing several types of materials, or are you looking for the old fashion, somewhat cheap blinds looking, vinyl mini blinds. My message here is that you should be specific, if you know what you want. Window shades are totally different than window blinds.

Window shades allow the option of providing a blackout window covering. Blackout blinds don’t really exist. A window blind is made of slats, whether a horizontal blind or a vertical blind. No matter how tightly you close the slats, there is no way to achieve the effect of a true blackout blind. First of all, you would have to order no holes privacy, which wraps the lift cords around the slats, rather than running thru the slats, which requires a tiny hole being drilled into each slat in multiple locations. The other challenge is the way blinds are cut. They just will not get snugged up enough to the sides of the window casing to achieve a true blackout blind effect.

Blackout shades and room darkening shades will provide the best light blocking in pretty much every situation. Roller shades, honeycomb shades, and Roman shades, can all be ordered as either room darkening shades or blackout shades. The Roman shades are made with a liner that provides the different levels of light blockage, while roller shades and honeycomb shades use an entirely different fabric from light filtering to room darkening, to blackout.

Back to Select Blinds for a minute. This is an easy to understand site. If you know what you’re looking for, you can click directly on the category. If you are not sure which type of window covering is right for you, they have a way to shop by the feature that is important to you. You can shop by blackout, cordless, lift style, like top down / bottom up, or several other methods. Selectblinds even has a measuring guarantee, in the unlikely event that you measured incorrectly.

Shutters now available at SelectBlinds!

by Chris S 21 Sep 2011

Faux Wood Cafe Style Shutters

SelectBlinds, the most reviewed and highest rated blinds in America, adds plantation shutters to their already impressive line of window fashions.

Select Blinds understands the additional complexities in ordering shutters on-line, as compared to ordering window blinds or window shades. We have put together an offering of three distinct shutter styles that are easy to measure for, with features that are easy to understand, installation instructions that make sense, and backed by the world class customer care department that has earned this company the coveted Stella Service award.

Plantation shutters by Select Blinds are available in four neutral colors, and are made of durable, warp resistant faux wood. Contrary to popular belief, faux wood does not come from the South American Faux tree. The SelectBlinds faux wood is a man-made material utilizing the scratch proof, moisture proof, Polyresin 3 material. All three faux wood shutter styles are available with either 2 ½”, 3 ½”, or 4 ½” louvers. The louver is what is referred to as a slat in a horizontal blind.

Faux wood standard folding shutters are the most popular style of plantation shutters. These standard folding shutters are available in multiple panel configurations, making them perfect for any window in any room.  The most popular panel configuration is the single panel plantation shutter. Single panel shutters offer the greatest range of light control, as there are no breaks in each panel. Bi-fold panels are basically halving the singe panel. Bi-fold panel shutters are quite handy when there is limited “swing” space in the room for opening your plantation shutters.

Faux wood café style shutters are ideal for those settings where an unobstructed view from the top portion of a window is desired. Imagine a bay window in a breakfast nook where total light control is not an issue, and privacy is only a concern to a certain level. The SelectBlinds faux wood café style shutter is the perfect solution. The café style plantation shutter offers the flexibility to go up as high as desired on the window, affording privacy and light control to your specific instructions.

Standard Folding Shutters

Shutters on any window end a certain air of sophistication to any environment, but nothing in the window fashion word says wow like a French door shutter. The SelectBlinds French door shutter can be ordered in all three louver sizes because you can specify door handle cutouts to allow for obstacle free shutter operation.

Plantation shutters are safe; there are no lift cords with which a child might get caught up in. faux wood plantation shutters will not warp, making them ideal for extreme climates. Plantation shutters are timeless in their design, making them a viable window fashion statement no matter how you choose to decorate your home. The Select Blinds plantation shutters are backed by the industry setting satisfaction guarantee, and a limited lifetime warranty, making ordering shutters from Select Blinds a worry free endeavor.

Enjoy your new Shutters!

A Shade Cooler than the Rest!

by Lisa Hs 12 Aug 2011

Cordless Blackout Shades

There are many styles and varieties of window shades. Window shades to hide the sunlight or window shades that let the sunlight shine in to illuminate a particular room. They are highly decorative and deco

rators of today use them to highlight the completion of their workmanship. Soft, genteel looking, and attractive, they display a personality of their own when added to a room.

Most window shades are custom fit, so measuring them correctly is the key.  A consumer must remember that measurements are either taken from the inside of the frame of the window, or the outside of the frame. This depends on what look they may be trying to achieve. Plus, they need to take into the consideration what kind of pull they want to use, and where it should be placed on the window shade for easy up and down use.

Some of the fabric used for window shades is quite unique. An attractive eye popping fabric is the lace window shade, looking especially well in an antique décor room. This window shade is elegant and will give your room an old fashioned, take you back in time, look. There is no lining needed with this window shade as it is perfect without it, and it is a great alternative to the sheer fabric window shade. This gorgeous lace window shade is desired by many decorators adept at antique decor. Roller shades and roman shades work especially well in the eye popping white lace window shade. It is difficult to see in from outside with this lace window shade, which allows for privacy. If you want to enhance an unattractive window, install lace window shades. “Body and substance is what it is all about”, say the decorators.

Solar control window shades are exceptional and a much needed item in the Southwest. This is where the sun shines on a constant basis, and the heat is intense. These shades will not fade out, or allow the sunlight to fade or discolor the furniture, and are easy to keep clean. The newest advances in technology are implemented into this solar control window shade. They will filter out the heat, glare and harmful UV rays, but still allow the flood of natural light to enter the room. The glare on the television is also drastically reduced. This window shade allows a person to see the outside world, and still have their privacy at all times of the day and night. This ability is called the ‘openness factor’ with this solar controlled window shade. They can be custom made in a cast of colors, such as grey, white, chalk and a light tobacco brown. The lighter colors are said to enhance thoughts and energize intelligence, and are perfect for study areas or libraries.

Blackout fabric window shades are especially popular with day sleepers. They will completely eliminate the light from a bedroom, or media room, and allow complete darkness for sleep, movie watching or privacy. These window shades feature a contemporary design and a continuous loop chain instead of the standard spring roller. This allows the window shade to glide easily with trouble free elevation and is perfect for that pitch black room. These are available in various prices and sun control factors depending on the purpose, and the room. The blackout window shade can be purchased in a three percent factor, allowing very little light in the room, to a fourteen percent factor which allows maximum light to enter.

Window shades are the perfect answer in cutting back on energy costs of the home or office space. Practical, stylish, durable, easy to clean and low cost window shades are still the wave of the future for home and offices.
