by Charlene 8 Jul 2014

It’s tempting to skip the free samples and just order the window coverings you want. Let’s be honest; we all like shortcuts. We’re busy and we have things to get done, so why take longer than necessary to order the blinds or shades you need for your windows? Colors can have minimal to severe variations when seen on computer or phone screens. The only way to see a product’s true color is to see it in person. And that’s why we offer free samples! Maybe the color you see on the screen would complement your wall color perfectly. But when you get your order, the color could be all wrong and not as perfect as you originally thought. While your computer screen can change the product’s color, so can your home’s lighting. Light can change how everything looks. Father's Day Gift Guide - Think Outside the Box

by Charlene 10 Jun 2014

Father's Day is a time to celebrate, honor, and thank all those father figures in our lives. It isn't always easy being a father, and it's time to think of those men and fathers who have made a difference in our lives. One way to show that love and appreciation is through a thoughtful gift.

Not sure what to get the fathers in your life? It might be time to think outside the ordinary. It's time to leave those ties, wallets, and tools on the shelves. This Father's Day is all about comfort, convenience, and style.

1 - Give the Gift of Undisturbed TV Time

Do the fathers in your life like to kick back, relax, and watch TV every once in a while? If there's a window in the TV or even computer room, solar shades are a must. Solar shades get rid of the glare on the screen, so your father can enjoy his favorite movie or television show even more, without that annoying glare. And you don't even have to choose a blackout option to get the best viewing experience. Depending on the solar shade you choose, your father can still retain the view to the outside and let natural light filter through.

2 - Give the Gift of a Better Night's Sleep

If your father prefers sleeping in near-complete darkness and wakes up at the first glimmer of light coming through the window, then blackout window shades are the perfect gift. A well-rested dad means a happy dad.

3 - Give the Gift of Saving Money on Energy Costs

Energy costs in the summer can be brutal. Instead of letting your father sweat it out this summer as he tries to keep money in his pocket, upgrade his current window coverings to honeycomb shades. With their cell construction, honeycomb shades add another layer of insulation, keeping the heat out. A cool, comfortable home is now within reach, and all within budget. What father wouldn't love that?

4 - Give the Gift of Modern Convenience

Have you ever sat down but forgot to adjust the window coverings? Maybe the light is shining right in your eyes or you have high windows in your home and you can't manually adjust them. Chances are the fathers in your life have experienced it, too. So why not give the gift of modern convenience with motorized blinds and shades? Controlled with a remote, your father could tilt or even open or close the blinds without ever leaving the couch. Talk about convenient.

5 - Give the Gift of Team Loyalty

Whether your father, your husband, or your father-in-law loves baseball, football, or basketball, you can find sports bedding to match. Nothing says team loyalty than having a team-inspired space, whether it's the bedroom or the man cave.

See? Buying unique gifts for your father isn't hard at all. As much as he loves the ties you buy him, maybe it's time to get creative and give him a gift that he can enjoy for many years to come.

The Perfect Window Coverings for Summer

by Charlene 9 May 2014

There are a lot of great, easy ways to prepare your home for summer. You can swap out throw pillows, change your bedding to lighter fabrics, and switching your area rugs to lighter, brighter ones. But there's another change you can make for summer that can update your home's look and even save you money. It all comes down to your window coverings. With the right choice in window coverings, you can save money each month and have a more comfortable home interior all summer long. So how do you know which window coverings are right for your home? To make the selection easier, we've broken it down for you.

Cellular Shades

Also called honeycomb shades, cellular shades add another layer of insulation to keep the heat outside where it belongs. The honeycomb structure not only keeps the heat from coming in, but it also filters or blacks out the natural light, which only blocks out even more heat. If you don't like the idea of blacking out the majority of light, you can still have natural light and a more comfortable home. That's the beauty of cellular shades. You can have the best of both worlds.

Pleated Shades

Pleated shades give you the look of cellular shades, but with a little less insulation. If you live in a location that doesn't get too warm in the summer, these are the perfect option. They still provide insulation, so don't feel as though you're missing out by choosing pleated shades. They look great and they serve their purpose.

Solar Shades

One of the many benefits of solar shades during the summer is that you can still have your view outside, even with your shades drawn. It also blocks harmful UV rays and it will protect your furniture from sun damage and unnecessary fading. Or, you always have the option to choose blackout solar shades, which would be perfect in bedrooms and media rooms.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice style for summer functionality. And now you don't have to. Stay cool, comfortable, and stylish this summer.

How to Clean Your Blinds

by Charlene 19 Mar 2014

Remember when you first installed your blinds and they looked fabulous and clean? Unfortunately, it doesn't take too long for blinds to collect dust. But cleaning your blinds can be a pain, especially if you're not sure you're using the proper cleaning method. After all, blinds are made from a variety of materials and each requires a unique way of cleaning. But it doesn't have to be a pain any longer. Here's what you need to know:

Wood Blinds

Even though wood blinds have been treated and sealed, using water on them is still not a good idea. Avoid cleaning wood blinds with water or even a spray cleaner. All your wood blinds need is a little dusting. Use a feather duster, dusting mitt, or a clean rag. Simply run the rag or duster across each slat, starting from the lowest slat to the highest. This will help you avoid pushing the dust onto the already-cleaned slats below.

If you want to take it one step further, you can always clean your wood blinds with a vacuum with a brush attachment. This will give you a deeper clean and it won't leave the dust you've pushed off the blinds on the floor or windowsill.

Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood is more durable than real wood when it comes to using water. With faux wood blinds, you can use a warm, damp cloth to clean the individual slats. If you'd like to add a miniscule amount of soap or detergent to the mixture, you can do that, too. But never use an abrasive sponge or cleaning tool. This can scratch the faux wood and cause damage, eventually letting the water into the core of the slats.

Just as with wood blinds, you can also use your vacuum's brush attachment to clean your faux wood blinds. Take it one slat at a time and you'll be done in no time.

Aluminum Mini Blinds

These are some of the most durable blinds out there and they're some of the easiest to clean. You can use both warm and cold water to clean them, and feel free to use soap. Because of the smooth finish of aluminum mini blinds, the dust should wipe off easily. However, if you need more cleaning power, you can take the aluminum blinds off the headrail and soak them in the bathtub. This is a sure-fire way to get your mini blinds sparkling again. However, as you're cleaning, try not to bend the slats. You'll want to avoid causing any damage to the blinds as you're cleaning them, no matter how minor it may seem at the time.

Fabric Blinds

Because fabric blinds aren't as firm as aluminum or even faux wood or wood blinds, they can be a little difficult to clean. First, try to clean them with the brush attachment on your vacuum. This may be all you need to get them clean. However, if that doesn't work as well as you had hoped, you can always take them to the dry cleaners. You won't need to do this every time you clean your fabric or cloth vertical blinds, but it's nice to know it's always an option.

Cleaning your blinds doesn't have to be a hassle. With the right knowledge and tools, you can tackle an average cleaning day or more in-depth spring cleaning.

What are some of the best ways that you've found to clean your blinds?

The Perfect Window Coverings for Your Breakfast Nook

by Charlene 11 Mar 2014

It doesn't matter whether your breakfast nook is perfect for two or spacious enough for an entire family. You can create a lovely, calming space. One major component of the ideal breakfast nook is the natural morning light shining through the windows. So choosing the right window covering is crucial to creating the right ambiance for your breakfast nook. You don't want to just cover up the windows. You want to accentuate and control the natural light, creating a radiant little nook.

Honeycomb Shades

If the morning sun through your window is too bright, honeycomb shades will help you filter the light so you get the soft, warm glow without having to squint while eating breakfast. Honeycomb shades also add insulation to your window, so you can sit comfortably without the hot summer sun heating up the room or the cold winter weather making your home too chilly. These are also great options if your breakfast nook window faces the street or a public area, so you can have privacy and still have light filtering through.

Solar Shades

Select solar shades let you have your privacy, keep the heat out, and let you maintain your view to the outside. Solar shades are perfect if you live in a particularly sunny location or if the morning sun hits your windows just right. Solar shades are designed to reduce glare, so you don't have to worry about facing the window and having the sun in your eyes or the sun reflecting off a metallic tabletop. But you'll still get great light and keep your awesome view.

Shutters

Want a more classic, traditional look for your breakfast nook? Shutters are the way to go. From folding shutters to café style shutters, you'll create a beautiful, breezy feel to your little nook. Depending on the amount of natural light that you have on that side of the house, faux wood shutters might be your best option. They are more durable than real wood and are great in heat and in direct sunlight.

Sheer Shades

Sheer shades are a great way to showcase your windows. They are stylish and modern, and they're well-designed for functionality. You have a choice between light filtering and room darkening, but for a breakfast nook, you still want that natural light, just not all of it at once. Sheer shades are light and whimsical, and they can give a clean feeling to your space.

Bamboo Shades

Give your breakfast nook a unique look with bamboo shades. Without a liner, these shades let ample light through. If you want some light, but you still want your privacy, simply add a privacy liner. Bamboo shades are perfect in any modern or contemporary home. They have a way of meshing well with almost any décor style.

Make your breakfast nook your new favorite place in your home. And it all comes down to which window coverings you use.

Which one is your favorite breakfast nook look?

How to Use Different Slat Sizes for Blinds

by Charlene 4 Mar 2014

All blinds offer different slat sizes. Slats are the horizontal pieces that you tilt, raise, and lower when operating your blinds. The difference in slat sizes may not seem like a lot, but the right, or even the wrong, slat size can make a world of difference for your windows. Don’t leave it up to chance. Instead, you simply have to learn which sizes will work best for each window of your home.

Small Slats and Windows

If you need to cover a small window, go with smaller slat sizes. If you order larger slats, it can disproportionate and odd. Smaller sized slats mean you’ll have more slats per blind than you would with larger slat sizes. Smaller slats also mean that you have less room between each one, so you can block more sunlight than with bigger slats. However, it also means that when you have the slats open, your view to the outside won’t be as open, but you can always completely raise the blinds when you want to.

Small slats are also ideal for window with narrow window frames and windowsills. If you want to mount the blinds inside the window frame, you’ll be able to do so with smaller slats, even if the window is small or medium sized. Choosing smaller slats can also help the blinds blend in more, and that’s perfect if you’re looking for subtlety.

If small slats are what you’re looking for, go with ½” or 1” slats, like these products below:

1/2" Micro Aluminum Mini Blinds

1" Veneto Wood Blinds

Medium Slats and Windows

This is the most common sized window, and you can get away with any slat sizes. But the most common slat size is 2 inches, and that’s the size you’ll find the majority of blinds and shades. Keep in mind that you may have a medium sized window but with a shallow or narrow windowsill. 2” blinds may not fit. But you always have the option to choose a smaller slat size or simply use an outside mount.

For a better view to the outside when your blinds are released and the slats are parallel to each other, medium-sized slats are the way to go. If you want to make more of a style statement, go with larger slats on a medium window. this will give it a chunkier, bolder look. But if you want something more proportioned, match medium slats to a medium-sized window.

Here are some of the most popular 2” blinds:

2" Express Wood Blinds

2" Premium Aluminum Blinds

Large Slats and Windows

Large window are some of the hardest to cover effectively. If you choose a slat size that’s too small, it can look chaotic and too busy. Another problem those with larger windows run into is the heaviness of the blinds. Blinds that are too heavy can begin to bow or even break under the strain. The perfect solution for this is to use multiple blinds on one headrail. This will alleviate the excessive weight and still give you a great looking window covering.

For blinds, 2 ½” slats are considered large. If you want only one blind to cover your large window, choose a lighter material, like real wood blinds. While faux wood is great for many situations, it’s actually heavier than real wood.

Take a look at these blinds perfect for large windows:

2 1/2" Deep Wood Blinds

2 1/2" Premium Faux Wood Blinds

Have you experimented with slat sizes for your windows? Tell us all about it in the comments below!

Fascinating Facts about the History of Blinds

by Charlene 31 Jan 2014

Window blinds have been used for thousands of years. Although they started out as purely functional tools, they have transformed to being a combination of style and function. But to understand how window blinds have become what they are today, you must first understand how they began and why they were used.

Ancient Egyptians

It’s believed that wealthy ancient Egyptians, like pharaohs, had woven blinds made from reeds. This was done mainly to limit the view from outsiders. Privacy is still a common reason window blinds are used today. These reed blinds probably also helped keep out some of the heat and the extreme, blinding sunlight, keeping the Egyptian elite more comfortable throughout the long Egyptian summers and dry during their harsh monsoon season.

Chinese Bamboo

The Chinese have used bamboo blinds for many centuries. While many think bamboo blinds or shades are a modern option, they are rooted in Chinese cultural history. The ancient Chinese used them to keep the interiors of their homes cool during the summer. Chinese bamboo blinds were expertly crafted, not haphazardly thrown together.

Korean Bamboo

It’s been said that bamboo blinds became a symbol for the powerful in ancient Korea. This symbol came from one ruler who couldn’t rule without the help of wife. Because of that, he concealed her behind bamboo blinds while she gave him wise advice to make him a great, powerful leader.

Venetian Blinds

It’s argued that Venetian blinds actually didn’t come from Venice originally. They’re believed to have come from Persia, by way of Venice. Just like with all other ancient window blinds, they started as providing privacy and another barrier against nature. Then, they morphed into something more aesthetically pleasing and stylish. In J.L. Gerome Ferris’ 1787 painting called, “The Visit of Paul Jones to the Constitutional Convention,” you can actually see wooden venetian blinds on the top window.

Modern window blinds have come a long way, both in style and functionality, but their history is rich. It will be exciting to see how window blinds improve and morph as years and generations pass.

Why Window Coverings are the Secret Ingredient

by Charlene 28 Jan 2014

Have you ever wished there was a secret ingredient to take your home décor from ordinary and dull to exciting and unique? You don’t have to wish anymore. Window blinds and shades are the secret ingredient to any room, and here’s why:

Light and Privacy Control

Window blinds and shades allow you to control the amount of light that comes into your home. You can choose to leave the blinds or shades wide open, letting in all the natural light or adjusting the shades or blinds to allow some warm light to come through, giving a soft glow to your space. The right amount of light can highlight accents in your home, creating a homey, welcoming vibe throughout your entire house. An added bonus is that you can also control your privacy while letting in the perfect amount of light.

Adds Texture

Sometimes a room just needs a little more texture. Opt for woven or bamboo shades like these to add sophisticated and natural texture. They are subtle enough that it won’t compete with any of your décor, but noticeable enough to add value to your existing décor.

Easily Interchangeable

Want an easy new look? Switch out your window blinds or shades with the season, opting for new colors, fabrics, materials, wood stains, patterns, or styles. Your options are endless, so you can have a whole new look whenever you want it.

Not Just for Windows

You can use window shades and blinds as closet doors or to hide less attractive things from visitors. Window blinds and shades are versatile, so wherever you decide to put them, they’ll look fantastic.

Tips for Measuring Custom Blinds to Perfection

by Charlene 21 Jan 2014

Windows aren’t created equal, and neither are window blinds. Finding the right fit and color can be a tedious task if you’re not sure where to start. But starting with SelectBlinds makes it easier. All you have to do is find the blinds you like and then measure your windows. If measured correctly, you’ll have blinds that perfectly fit your windows, no matter their sizes. With just a few specialized tips, you can measure for your custom blinds perfectly.

Tip #1: Determine the Mount

Before you can measure, you have to decide whether you want an inside mount or an outside mount. The chosen mount will affect the measurements, so be sure of your decision as you’re measuring. If you’d prefer an inside mount, don’t use the window molding or frame in the final numbers. If you want an outside mount, make sure to measure using the molding, and go out as far as you’d like the window blinds to sit.

Tip #2: Reference the Measuring Guides

Each type of window covering has a unique and specific measuring guide. Thoroughly reading the guide for your custom blinds, whether they’re aluminum, wood, or vertical blinds, will ensure proper measuring for that specific product. Here’s a great resource list. Just pick which mount you want and the type of window coverings you’re measuring for, and the right measuring guide is at your fingertips.

Tip #3: Use a Steel Tape Measure

When you’re ready to measure your windows, opt for a steel tape measure over a cloth or fabric one. A steel measuring tape won’t allow gaps from not being pulled tight enough. A steel tape measure is more apt to give you true measurements. Using steel is also a benefit if you have taller windows because you can measure without always getting a chair or a ladder, depending on the window’s height.

Tip #4: Use a Friend

Using a friend to confirm measurements is a fantastic way to make sure you measured correctly. If you have particularly large or tall windows, have your friend hold one side of the steel tape measure, so you don’t have to try to do it all by yourself.

Tip #5: Write it Down

You may have a good memory, but write those measurements down anyway. It will save you possible measuring hassles in the long run. If you have someone helping, call out the measurements to your friend to write down right away, saving you from having to climb up and down a ladder.

Tip #6: The Rule of Three

To ensure accuracy, measure the height and width of each window three times. When measuring the height, measure the left side, middle, and right side of the window, writing down the measurements as you go. For the width, measure the top, middle, and the bottom. The three window measurements might be different from each other, but there’s nothing to worry about. Next, watch this video. It will tell you which measurements to use.

Measuring for window blinds is easy. With the six tips above, you’ll be well on your way to having the best fit blinds you’ve ever had.

Boring Bathroom? Spice It Up with the Right Window Covering

by Charlene 7 Jan 2014

Many people first think of the kitchen or bedroom when it comes to redecorating. Sure, the bathroom is a popular choice for remodeling, but what about decorating? You may have your color scheme and your theme already integrated into your bathroom, but you may have noticed that something is missing, some style, some panache, some flair. Really it comes down to two words: window coverings. The right window covering can take your boring bathroom and give it any vibe you want: modern, traditional, or warm and cozy.

The amount of choices you have can easily leave you overwhelmed, but it doesn’t need to be. Here’s a short breakdown that can help you follow the right decorating path for your lifestyle needs and your vision.

Shutters

If a warm, country feel is what you’re looking for, shutters will be the perfect addition to your bathroom. Shutters are reminiscent of a time past, perhaps a simpler, less hectic time, but they also have a more modern feel than you might expect, so your bathroom won’t look outdated. The combination of traditional and modern will make your bathroom unique and make it feel clean and open.

Bamboo or Woven Shades

Depending on the rest of your décor, bamboo or woven shades can make your bathroom feel rustic and earthy, or pair it with contemporary pieces for a one-of-a-kind look. If the bathroom is bland, a bamboo or woven shade will give the room much-needed texture that can make any bathroom pop. Combining texture, color, and pattern can give your bathroom the panache you’re looking for.

Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades

Want natural light, but you don’t want to sacrifice your privacy? Top Down Bottom Up shades will give you the best of both worlds. The shades can be moved, for instance, halfway down your window so that the top lets in the light, but the bottom of the window is covered appropriately. Or if you want to allow different amounts of light in from each window, these shades allow you to make those adjustments effortlessly. A bonus to using this window shade is energy efficient and keeps your bathroom at a comfortable temperature without using any unnecessary energy. Plus, a cellular shade provides more privacy at night than different types of shades, which is perfect for a bathroom.

Wood or Faux Wood Blinds

With so many color and wood options, like Cherrywood, Honduras Mahogany, or American Walnut, wood blinds can work with any bathroom décor. Using wood blinds, or even faux wood, will give your space a more luxurious feel. And it adds some extra flair. Wood blinds are warm, inviting, and rich, which makes them the perfect addition if you like to relax in the tub after a long day.

Your bathroom doesn’t have to be boring any longer. With the right window covering, it will become your favorite statement room in the house, and the bathroom ambiance can flow into other areas of your house, making you one step closer to your dream home.

Should I Choose Faux Wood or Real Wood Blinds?

by Nate K 19 Aug 2013

Two of the most popular products people choose when ordering window treatments are faux wood blinds and wood blinds. It is very difficult to understand the differences between these products and it is my goal to share some insight in to the benefits of each product as well as their optimal utilization.

Benefits of Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood or vinyl blinds are an extremely versatile product. They come in a variety of styles and each style has its benefits. The Express Faux Wood Blinds are a great value and provide a very economical way to get the appearance of a wood blind without the cost of buying real wood blinds. They are very durable and provide a high resistance to moisture. This makes them ideal for bathrooms and areas of the country that experience high level of humidity. There are some retailers selling a foam product which will warp and turn yellow. It is critical that you buy this type of blind from a reputable retailer. The one drawback to these blinds is the weight of the product. They can require significantly more ladders to support the weight and can be heavy to raise when ordered for large windows.

The Polymer Wood Blinds are manufactured from a combination of real wood and engineered poly-thermal material. This product is the most durable type of faux wood blinds and provides the best UV protection of any product on the market today. This product is fantastic in environments with temperature extremes like the desert southwest and the cold northeast. This product is also the most humidity resistant faux wood blind available online today. This product is heavy and will require more ladders for support, but if durability is what you want, this is the product for you.

Benefits of Real Wood Blinds

Real wood blinds are still extremely popular and for many people there is no substitute to the warmth they can provide a room. They are much lighter than faux wood and require far fewer ladders giving you a more uniform look in a house with varying window sizes. Wood can warp in high humidity areas where faux wood proves to be a much better performing option to cover your windows. Wood blinds also tend to struggle with high UV exposure and can fade over time. If you live in an environment where this is a concern and want the timeless look of real wood blinds you will want to buy Deep Wood Blinds. This product is the most durable, warp, and scratch resistant product available today. These blinds are even manufactured to resist dust which will require significantly less time with that feather duster.

This is one of the rare instances in decorating that there is a product for all environments. Faux Wood Blinds and Wood Blinds come with great decorating options like cloth tapes to add a touch of flair. The most important thing is to make sure you are happy with the color and texture of the blinds before you buy them. Thankfully, SelectBlinds.com offers free sample swatches which allow you the opportunity to touch and see the product up close. They also provide the industries best lifetime warranty with every order. Always remember to have fun in your decorating and choose the product that best fits you and your home.

Common Measuring Pitfalls to Avoid for New Blinds

by Nate K 4 Apr 2013

Measuring for window coverings is an extremely simple process when followed correctly. As with anything if the instructions are not understood mistakes can be made. In this article we will share some of the common mistakes we see made on a regular basis and how to avoid them. We have broken them out to inside mount and outside mount to avoid confusion. You must identify which application you are measuring for and this can easily be done on our How to Measure for Blinds and Shades page.

Inside Mount

  1. Customers sometimes attempt to shortcut the measuring process by measuring the size of the blinds or shades they are replacing. In an effort to make the process as simple as possible we take all the difficulty in ensuring a perfect fit by accounting for all the necessary adjustments for mounting hardware at our manufacturing facility. This requires that we are provided the inside dimensions of the window frame as laid out in our How to Measure Video.
  2. The next common hurdle that can be easily avoided is that occasionally customers attempt to compensate for the deductions made at our factory. They try to eliminate light leaking in on the sides of the shades by ordering them slightly wider than the dimensions of their window. When this type of adjustment is made the shades often arrive too wide and have to be sent back to the manufacturer to be corrected. If you are a customer looking for the ultimate in light blockage consider purchasing the products in our Room Darkening Shades category

Outside Mount

  1. One important thing to remember when measuring for an outside mount is to account for the head rail. Often time’s customers forget this which causes the shade to arrive too short for the window. Always add 2” to 4” for the head rail when measuring for this type of blind or shade. To get detailed instructions on how to measure for the exact product you are ordering visit our How to Measure page.
  2. When mounting an outside mount shade it is common for light to leak in as the shades sit in front of the window. In order to minimize this we suggest adding 2” to 3” to the width of the blind or shade when possible. This dramatically reduces the light coming in on the side and will ensure your happiness with the window treatments you have ordered.

Hopefully these simple tips help you through the measuring process. It is our goal to supply you with custom made window treatments that will give you years of enjoyment.

Real Wood Blinds - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

by AL__-S 21 Feb 2013

I recently shared my door blinds experience, of replacing French door roller shades with real wood blinds. It’s been a little more than a month since I hung the blinds, and for anyone interested, they are working out better than the motorized roller shades, and I am quite pleased with the choice I made in wood blinds.

Real Wood Blinds from Select Blinds

Real wood basswood blinds, in the 1” slat size, are the window blinds now hanging as my French door blinds. The good, the bad, and the ugly are as good a way as any to relay my thoughts.

The good is really good. These door blinds, made from 100% basswood, look great. The room in which the blinds hang is a home office. The floors are wood, and the doors are wood. The roller shades that were in use before the wood blinds made their debut also looked good, but the real wood slats trump them easily. Another plus is the fact that the slats are tiltable, so when the sun hits the windows, causing glare, a simple twist of the tilt wand angles the slats to whatever degree necessary to redirect the damaging UV rays.

Ease of installation is another really big “good” feature of the designer wood door blinds. The mounting brackets are simple to figure out, and require but two screws. Inside mount brackets attach to the inside top of the frame, providing a pretty solid template for hanging any window blind exactly level. Door blinds almost always are mounted outside the window frame. You can still use the window frame as a guide to mount the brackets, and they might be perfectly level, but it’s not as sure of a thing as an inside mount. The designer bass wood blinds from SelectBlinds come with valances that have a magnet mount. The beauty of the magnetic mount valance is that you can make any slight leveling adjustment with the valance. A very handy feature for any horizontal blind.

The bad is that I like to raise the door blinds at times, which precludes my using the hold down brackets, which means that when I open and close the door, the blinds swing off the door at the bottom. It’s really not a big deal, as they settle in exactly where they should, but I want to be fair in my assessment. The bad leads to the ugly, which is occurring under the same scenario. When the door blinds are raised, the lift cords have to be wound up on a cord cleat, or they are very ugly laying strewn about the floor.

The good about these door blinds is very strong, while the bad and the ugly are not a big deal at all. I love the real wood blinds, and would not trade them out.

Which Window Covering Is Right For You?

by AL__-S 28 Jan 2013

Window coverings are really anything that covers your window. Most people think of window blinds or shades, plantation shutters, or even drapes. But the fact of the matter is that even an old sheet hanging over your window, is a window covering. I’m not advocating the use of old sheets to cover your windows; I’m just saying that your idea of what should be covering your window is not necessarily the only option.

Solar Shades vs. Wood Blinds

I recently changed the window coverings in my home office. Recently being this past weekend. I can save you reading the rest of this by telling you the end result. My wife was right. But you already knew that. The interesting thing about it is the details. My home office is a nice size room, and two of the walls face outside, and include 4 French doors each. And actually, two of the French doors are faux French doors. I had hung motorized lift solar shades on the windows. They had a handy remote, with which I used to raise them and lower them. The shades were beautiful, and although the privacy factor was less than 100%, they blocked harmful UV rays, and there was the “cool” factor. I mean any time anyone was over, I found the need to raise or lower the shades, and always got the desired response of “wow”.

So my really cool solar roller shades, due to the motorization, had some issues. Although these issues were not a deal killer for me, my wife pointed out the deficiencies in their operation. These shades never seemed to go up or down at the same speed. These window shades were battery operated, and it seemed like there was always one or two shades, out of the eight, that had to have the batteries replaced, which is no easy feat. Oh, and on two of the roller shades, I couldn’t get the battery case to fit behind the head rail, leaving the battery case exposed.

My thinking had been that the solar roller shades were the window covering that made the most sense for the room. Now that I have replaced them, I can easily see that my inclination towards window shades, specifically roller shades, and even more specifically solar shades, was not the best solution. So, I decided on the 1" basswood, real wood blinds to cover the windows of my French doors, and faux French doors.

I love them! The solar shades provided limited privacy. The basswood blinds give total privacy. The solar shades blocked harmful UV rays, but only when they were in the lowered position. The 1” wood blinds have a tilt rod, and I can tilt against the rays of the sun, and still have the ability to clearly see out through the slats. The roller shades had motorization, which eliminates cords, and is really cool. The wood blinds, well, never mind. They do not have motorized lift, but they don’t have to be raised. Just tilt the slats where you want them. The wood blinds look amazing, and I have to admit that they actually enrich the look of the room.

Both the shades and the blinds are great window coverings, and they both can be found at www.selectblinds.com, where you can find all of your window covering needs.

Huge Veterans Day Sale Going on Now!

by Chris S 9 Nov 2012

Veterans Day is a great time to be thankful for all the freedom and security that the citizens of our country enjoy. The men and women of our Armed Forces graciously and selflessly defend our country to protect its freedom. Veterans Day began as Armistice Day and was first proclaimed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919. We leave you with a great quote from President Wilson on the very first Veterans Day:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

If you know a service member or veteran, be sure to let them know that you are grateful for their service to this country.

Blinds and Shades Upgrades

by Lisa Hs 10 Aug 2012

Cellular Shades

Custom blinds and shades have several distinct advantages over the window coverings found in your neighborhood big box retailer. Perhaps the biggest advantage is in the cost to acquire your blinds and shades. The cost can actually be less, if you are willing to put a little effort into shopping on-line.

Pre-Cut vs Custom

The blinds and shades found on the retailer’s shelf are pre-cut to specific sizes. The sizes are the most popular window sizes, so one would think that they will work in every situation. The fact is that a 30” x 60” window might not allow a 30” x 60” pre-cut window shade. The reason is basic. The frame for that window is going to reduce the opening to some degree. That means that the standard blind from the local retailer will be too wide for an inside mount, and not really wide enough for an outside mount.

Custom blinds and shades are exactly what they sound like. They are made just for you, to the exact size necessary for an installation that will give you the privacy and light control that you expect. There are plenty of options available for shopping for custom window coverings. In home consultation from a decorator is at one end of the spectrum, and online do it yourself shopping is at the other end. If you have a tape measure, a drill, and a screw driver, you will get the most for your money by shopping online.

Selectblinds.com comes out on top for online blinds and shades. The selection is broad, covering all styles of shades, from honeycomb to Roman shades, as well as real wood blinds, faux wood blinds, and aluminum mini blinds. Select Blinds offers exclusive designer collections, including a kid’s collection, and their pricing blows away the big box retailer. They make the entire process very easy to understand, they offer helpful videos, and they get your blinds and shades to you fast!

Wood Blinds

There are other distinct advantages to shopping for blinds and shades with SelectBlinds. Shipping is free, there is a price guarantee, and they even have a satisfaction guarantee. They are also the highest rated, most reviewed blinds on the internet.

Everything mentioned so far played a huge part in my decision to trust my window coverings to SelectBlinds. The free upgrades were just icing on the cake. It seemed that whichever custom blind or shade that is looked at offered some kind of free upgrade. Honeycomb shades offered free top down – bottom up. Certain products offered a screaming hot deal of buy three get one free, other products promised to be made in one day, or they were free. Upgraded valances were offered at no charge on several blinds, which I took advantage of, and let me tell you, they made a huge difference in the look.

So the next time that you are standing in the aisle of big box retail looking at the array of shades, make a note of the price, and look at the quality, and then go home and log onto www.selectblinds.com. You will be happy you did.

Most Reviewed and Highest Rated Blinds in America

by Chris S 3 Jul 2012

SelectBlinds.com

SelectBlinds.com sells window fashions online. This includes window shades and window blinds, as well as plantation shutters. Select Blinds offers these custom window coverings under their own brand name. The company claims that they sell more blinds than any other online seller of window coverings.

Consumers care about those statements, somewhat. The fact is that all of the above is information from SelectBlinds. There is another interesting statement that is on their website; "The Most Reviewed, Highest Rated Blinds in America". That is exactly the statement that means something to the consumer. This is a claim that is easily proven. Custom window coverings are a major item for any home. Window blinds and window shades, allow for privacy, provide energy efficiency, and control the level of ambient light in a room.

Window fashions are such an important investment, that you can be sure that when there are customers who are unhappy with their experience, they will write a review. Select Blinds has reviews that are less than stellar, but that is the exception to the nearly 200,000 positively glowing reviews that can be found on their site, and on the sites of the independent review sites. Epinions, Google Checkout, Bizrate, Nextag, and Reseller Ratings all back up this bold claim.

SelectBlinds puts their money where their mouth is. They offer satisfaction guarantees, price guarantees, free shipping, and a suite of products that will satisfy any window covering need. They also offer an exclusive Designer Collection, called the @Home Collection by Carriann Arkowski, a Kids’ Collection, and also a collection of custom shades that carry the Good Housekeeping seal of approval.

Shopping for window blinds and window shades can be an intimidating experience. To take the fear out of this event, try www.selectblinds.com, where your satisfaction is guaranteed!
