Say Hello to Fall with Window Insulation and Warmer Bedding

by Charlene 23 Sep 2014

Fall is finally here! It may not feel like it in some places, but in other places, autumn is in full force. Leaves are changing colors, and soon they'll be scattered on the ground. The air is getting cooler and the daylight hours are getting shorter. So now's the time to prepare your home for that beautiful fall weather, which will inevitably turn to the harsh chill of winter.

Better Insulation

Because the fall season brings with it colder temperatures, you'll want to make sure you have the best insulation possible. This will save you money by reducing your energy usage. One of the easiest ways to better insulate your home is to focus on your windows. By simply adding the right window coverings, you'll save money, energy usage, and still have a beautifully stylish home.

Honeycomb shades, also called cellular shades, provide the best insulation. Their honeycomb construction gives your window shades even more layers, all while trapping the cold weather in the little cells. For even more insulation, choose double cell honeycomb shades.

Don't like the look of cellular shades? You can still get great insulation benefits with other types of window shades, including roman shades and solar shades.

Light Filtering

Fall is beautiful, but it just doesn't offer the same warm natural light that summer did. While you may have wanted to block out the sun and the heat in the summer, blocking out light in the fall will only leave your home cold and dark.

Choosing a light filtering window shade will give your home that soft, warm glow that's perfect for this time of year.  With the decreasing amount of sunlight for the next few months, it's important to use the sunlight you do have with light filtering window shades.

Warmer Bedding

If you haven't yet, now's the time to change out your bedding. Depending on where you live, you may need even warmer bedding than other places. Start with warm sheets. Then you can add blankets, throws, down comforters and duvet inserts. Make your bed as cozy as possible, and you'll have a happy and warm fall while you appreciate the chill in the air, tucked away in your bed.

One of the best, and most fun, benefits of saying hello to fall is that you can choose fall color palettes for everything from your window coverings to your bedding. Isn't it time you prepared your home for fall?

National Assisted Living Week and Regaining Independence with Motorized Window Coverings

by Charlene 9 Sep 2014

This week is National Assisted Living Week! It's all about showing our love, care, and concern for those in assisted living facilities. One way to show that concern is to help increase their level of independence. It can be disheartening to lose independence, so finding small ways to give it back can lighten the hearts of those you love the most.

Motorized window coverings will help your loved ones open, close, and tilt their window coverings, all from the comfort of their beds or chairs. This is a great option for those with limited mobility or physical limitations. Giving those in assisted living facilities the ability to control the natural light that comes into the room at any given moment can bring joy. It may seem small, but for those with limitations can regain some of their confidence.

Motorized window coverings are easy to use. All it takes is the small remote. It can be used from up to 65 feet away, and it's perfect for high windows or blinds or shades that are a little heavier to lift. With just a touch of the finger, those in assisted living facilities can have some control again. And sometimes that's enough to boost their self-worth and help them feel loved and appreciated.

Real Wood Blinds vs. Faux Wood Blinds

by Charlene 19 Aug 2014

Here at Select Blinds, we have a lot of options when it comes to window coverings. A common struggle for many people is deciding if real wood blinds or faux wood blinds are better. In short, there isn't a clear cut general answer. Which one is better depends on your needs, your style, and your lifestyle. So, in order to make that important decision, start with the pros and cons of each.

Real Wood Blinds

Pros

  • Rich, elegant, and warm.
  • Lightweight, making them great for large windows.
  • Comes in a variety of luxurious stains.
  • Generally more stain and paint options than with faux wood blinds.

Cons

  • Warps and bows with humidity, moisture, and extreme temperatures.
  • Less durable than its faux wood counterpart.
  • More expensive than faux wood blinds.

Faux Wood Blinds

Pros

  • Looks just like real wood.
  • Incredibly durable, so they're perfect for homes with children and pets.
  • Moisture and humidity-resistant, so they're ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Great in extreme temperatures.
  • Budget-friendly.

Cons

  • Heavier than real wood blinds, so they're not recommended for large windows, unless you choose the multiple blinds on 1 headrail option.
  • Fewer color choices when compared to real wood blinds.

So which appeals to you more, real wood or faux wood blinds?

Best Window Treatments for Large Windows

by Charlene 12 Aug 2014

Large windows are beautiful and let in a lot of natural light, but they can also be difficult to cover. If you don't choose the right window coverings, it can be impossible to lift and the weight of the window coverings for the large window can cause damage and bowing.

Let us take the mystery out of window coverings for large windows. It's easy once you know what you're looking for.

Continuous Cord Loops

Blinds and shades with a continuous cord loop lift system are great for large windows. Because of the lift mechanism, you'll be able to raise and lower your window coverings easily and evenly. You won't have to worry about one side lowering or raising faster than the other side. Your blinds or shades will look great and last longer.

Multiple Blinds on One Headrail

Another option to consider for large windows is one headrail with two or three blinds. This will give you full coverage, but let you operate the individual shades or blinds separately. Installing multiple blinds on one headrail will eliminate the bowing problem that can accompany heavy window coverings.

Lighter Materials

A good rule of thumb for covering large windows is to choose lighter materials, like single cell honeycomb shades, real wood blinds, and sheer shades. The lighter the window coverings, the less bowing will occur and the easier it will be to use. Of course you want your window coverings to look nice, but you also want them perfectly functional, and lighter materials will help you have both.

Just because you have large windows doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style for functionality. Here at Select Blinds, you can choose the look you want and make it a perfect fit for your larger-than-life windows.

Father's Day Gift Guide - Think Outside the Box

by Charlene 10 Jun 2014

Father's Day is a time to celebrate, honor, and thank all those father figures in our lives. It isn't always easy being a father, and it's time to think of those men and fathers who have made a difference in our lives. One way to show that love and appreciation is through a thoughtful gift.

Not sure what to get the fathers in your life? It might be time to think outside the ordinary. It's time to leave those ties, wallets, and tools on the shelves. This Father's Day is all about comfort, convenience, and style.

1 - Give the Gift of Undisturbed TV Time

Do the fathers in your life like to kick back, relax, and watch TV every once in a while? If there's a window in the TV or even computer room, solar shades are a must. Solar shades get rid of the glare on the screen, so your father can enjoy his favorite movie or television show even more, without that annoying glare. And you don't even have to choose a blackout option to get the best viewing experience. Depending on the solar shade you choose, your father can still retain the view to the outside and let natural light filter through.

2 - Give the Gift of a Better Night's Sleep

If your father prefers sleeping in near-complete darkness and wakes up at the first glimmer of light coming through the window, then blackout window shades are the perfect gift. A well-rested dad means a happy dad.

3 - Give the Gift of Saving Money on Energy Costs

Energy costs in the summer can be brutal. Instead of letting your father sweat it out this summer as he tries to keep money in his pocket, upgrade his current window coverings to honeycomb shades. With their cell construction, honeycomb shades add another layer of insulation, keeping the heat out. A cool, comfortable home is now within reach, and all within budget. What father wouldn't love that?

4 - Give the Gift of Modern Convenience

Have you ever sat down but forgot to adjust the window coverings? Maybe the light is shining right in your eyes or you have high windows in your home and you can't manually adjust them. Chances are the fathers in your life have experienced it, too. So why not give the gift of modern convenience with motorized blinds and shades? Controlled with a remote, your father could tilt or even open or close the blinds without ever leaving the couch. Talk about convenient.

5 - Give the Gift of Team Loyalty

Whether your father, your husband, or your father-in-law loves baseball, football, or basketball, you can find sports bedding to match. Nothing says team loyalty than having a team-inspired space, whether it's the bedroom or the man cave.

See? Buying unique gifts for your father isn't hard at all. As much as he loves the ties you buy him, maybe it's time to get creative and give him a gift that he can enjoy for many years to come.

The Perfect Window Coverings for Summer

by Charlene 9 May 2014

There are a lot of great, easy ways to prepare your home for summer. You can swap out throw pillows, change your bedding to lighter fabrics, and switching your area rugs to lighter, brighter ones. But there's another change you can make for summer that can update your home's look and even save you money. It all comes down to your window coverings. With the right choice in window coverings, you can save money each month and have a more comfortable home interior all summer long. So how do you know which window coverings are right for your home? To make the selection easier, we've broken it down for you.

Cellular Shades

Also called honeycomb shades, cellular shades add another layer of insulation to keep the heat outside where it belongs. The honeycomb structure not only keeps the heat from coming in, but it also filters or blacks out the natural light, which only blocks out even more heat. If you don't like the idea of blacking out the majority of light, you can still have natural light and a more comfortable home. That's the beauty of cellular shades. You can have the best of both worlds.

Pleated Shades

Pleated shades give you the look of cellular shades, but with a little less insulation. If you live in a location that doesn't get too warm in the summer, these are the perfect option. They still provide insulation, so don't feel as though you're missing out by choosing pleated shades. They look great and they serve their purpose.

Solar Shades

One of the many benefits of solar shades during the summer is that you can still have your view outside, even with your shades drawn. It also blocks harmful UV rays and it will protect your furniture from sun damage and unnecessary fading. Or, you always have the option to choose blackout solar shades, which would be perfect in bedrooms and media rooms.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice style for summer functionality. And now you don't have to. Stay cool, comfortable, and stylish this summer.

How to Clean Your Blinds

by Charlene 19 Mar 2014

Remember when you first installed your blinds and they looked fabulous and clean? Unfortunately, it doesn't take too long for blinds to collect dust. But cleaning your blinds can be a pain, especially if you're not sure you're using the proper cleaning method. After all, blinds are made from a variety of materials and each requires a unique way of cleaning. But it doesn't have to be a pain any longer. Here's what you need to know:

Wood Blinds

Even though wood blinds have been treated and sealed, using water on them is still not a good idea. Avoid cleaning wood blinds with water or even a spray cleaner. All your wood blinds need is a little dusting. Use a feather duster, dusting mitt, or a clean rag. Simply run the rag or duster across each slat, starting from the lowest slat to the highest. This will help you avoid pushing the dust onto the already-cleaned slats below.

If you want to take it one step further, you can always clean your wood blinds with a vacuum with a brush attachment. This will give you a deeper clean and it won't leave the dust you've pushed off the blinds on the floor or windowsill.

Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood is more durable than real wood when it comes to using water. With faux wood blinds, you can use a warm, damp cloth to clean the individual slats. If you'd like to add a miniscule amount of soap or detergent to the mixture, you can do that, too. But never use an abrasive sponge or cleaning tool. This can scratch the faux wood and cause damage, eventually letting the water into the core of the slats.

Just as with wood blinds, you can also use your vacuum's brush attachment to clean your faux wood blinds. Take it one slat at a time and you'll be done in no time.

Aluminum Mini Blinds

These are some of the most durable blinds out there and they're some of the easiest to clean. You can use both warm and cold water to clean them, and feel free to use soap. Because of the smooth finish of aluminum mini blinds, the dust should wipe off easily. However, if you need more cleaning power, you can take the aluminum blinds off the headrail and soak them in the bathtub. This is a sure-fire way to get your mini blinds sparkling again. However, as you're cleaning, try not to bend the slats. You'll want to avoid causing any damage to the blinds as you're cleaning them, no matter how minor it may seem at the time.

Fabric Blinds

Because fabric blinds aren't as firm as aluminum or even faux wood or wood blinds, they can be a little difficult to clean. First, try to clean them with the brush attachment on your vacuum. This may be all you need to get them clean. However, if that doesn't work as well as you had hoped, you can always take them to the dry cleaners. You won't need to do this every time you clean your fabric or cloth vertical blinds, but it's nice to know it's always an option.

Cleaning your blinds doesn't have to be a hassle. With the right knowledge and tools, you can tackle an average cleaning day or more in-depth spring cleaning.

What are some of the best ways that you've found to clean your blinds?

The Perfect Window Coverings for Your Breakfast Nook

by Charlene 11 Mar 2014

It doesn't matter whether your breakfast nook is perfect for two or spacious enough for an entire family. You can create a lovely, calming space. One major component of the ideal breakfast nook is the natural morning light shining through the windows. So choosing the right window covering is crucial to creating the right ambiance for your breakfast nook. You don't want to just cover up the windows. You want to accentuate and control the natural light, creating a radiant little nook.

Honeycomb Shades

If the morning sun through your window is too bright, honeycomb shades will help you filter the light so you get the soft, warm glow without having to squint while eating breakfast. Honeycomb shades also add insulation to your window, so you can sit comfortably without the hot summer sun heating up the room or the cold winter weather making your home too chilly. These are also great options if your breakfast nook window faces the street or a public area, so you can have privacy and still have light filtering through.

Solar Shades

Select solar shades let you have your privacy, keep the heat out, and let you maintain your view to the outside. Solar shades are perfect if you live in a particularly sunny location or if the morning sun hits your windows just right. Solar shades are designed to reduce glare, so you don't have to worry about facing the window and having the sun in your eyes or the sun reflecting off a metallic tabletop. But you'll still get great light and keep your awesome view.

Shutters

Want a more classic, traditional look for your breakfast nook? Shutters are the way to go. From folding shutters to café style shutters, you'll create a beautiful, breezy feel to your little nook. Depending on the amount of natural light that you have on that side of the house, faux wood shutters might be your best option. They are more durable than real wood and are great in heat and in direct sunlight.

Sheer Shades

Sheer shades are a great way to showcase your windows. They are stylish and modern, and they're well-designed for functionality. You have a choice between light filtering and room darkening, but for a breakfast nook, you still want that natural light, just not all of it at once. Sheer shades are light and whimsical, and they can give a clean feeling to your space.

Bamboo Shades

Give your breakfast nook a unique look with bamboo shades. Without a liner, these shades let ample light through. If you want some light, but you still want your privacy, simply add a privacy liner. Bamboo shades are perfect in any modern or contemporary home. They have a way of meshing well with almost any décor style.

Make your breakfast nook your new favorite place in your home. And it all comes down to which window coverings you use.

Which one is your favorite breakfast nook look?

How to Use Different Slat Sizes for Blinds

by Charlene 4 Mar 2014

All blinds offer different slat sizes. Slats are the horizontal pieces that you tilt, raise, and lower when operating your blinds. The difference in slat sizes may not seem like a lot, but the right, or even the wrong, slat size can make a world of difference for your windows. Don’t leave it up to chance. Instead, you simply have to learn which sizes will work best for each window of your home.

Small Slats and Windows

If you need to cover a small window, go with smaller slat sizes. If you order larger slats, it can disproportionate and odd. Smaller sized slats mean you’ll have more slats per blind than you would with larger slat sizes. Smaller slats also mean that you have less room between each one, so you can block more sunlight than with bigger slats. However, it also means that when you have the slats open, your view to the outside won’t be as open, but you can always completely raise the blinds when you want to.

Small slats are also ideal for window with narrow window frames and windowsills. If you want to mount the blinds inside the window frame, you’ll be able to do so with smaller slats, even if the window is small or medium sized. Choosing smaller slats can also help the blinds blend in more, and that’s perfect if you’re looking for subtlety.

If small slats are what you’re looking for, go with ½” or 1” slats, like these products below:

1/2" Micro Aluminum Mini Blinds

1" Veneto Wood Blinds

Medium Slats and Windows

This is the most common sized window, and you can get away with any slat sizes. But the most common slat size is 2 inches, and that’s the size you’ll find the majority of blinds and shades. Keep in mind that you may have a medium sized window but with a shallow or narrow windowsill. 2” blinds may not fit. But you always have the option to choose a smaller slat size or simply use an outside mount.

For a better view to the outside when your blinds are released and the slats are parallel to each other, medium-sized slats are the way to go. If you want to make more of a style statement, go with larger slats on a medium window. this will give it a chunkier, bolder look. But if you want something more proportioned, match medium slats to a medium-sized window.

Here are some of the most popular 2” blinds:

2" Express Wood Blinds

2" Premium Aluminum Blinds

Large Slats and Windows

Large window are some of the hardest to cover effectively. If you choose a slat size that’s too small, it can look chaotic and too busy. Another problem those with larger windows run into is the heaviness of the blinds. Blinds that are too heavy can begin to bow or even break under the strain. The perfect solution for this is to use multiple blinds on one headrail. This will alleviate the excessive weight and still give you a great looking window covering.

For blinds, 2 ½” slats are considered large. If you want only one blind to cover your large window, choose a lighter material, like real wood blinds. While faux wood is great for many situations, it’s actually heavier than real wood.

Take a look at these blinds perfect for large windows:

2 1/2" Deep Wood Blinds

2 1/2" Premium Faux Wood Blinds

Fascinating Facts about the History of Blinds

by Charlene 31 Jan 2014

Window blinds have been used for thousands of years. Although they started out as purely functional tools, they have transformed to being a combination of style and function. But to understand how window blinds have become what they are today, you must first understand how they began and why they were used.

Ancient Egyptians

It’s believed that wealthy ancient Egyptians, like pharaohs, had woven blinds made from reeds. This was done mainly to limit the view from outsiders. Privacy is still a common reason window blinds are used today. These reed blinds probably also helped keep out some of the heat and the extreme, blinding sunlight, keeping the Egyptian elite more comfortable throughout the long Egyptian summers and dry during their harsh monsoon season.

Chinese Bamboo

The Chinese have used bamboo blinds for many centuries. While many think bamboo blinds or shades are a modern option, they are rooted in Chinese cultural history. The ancient Chinese used them to keep the interiors of their homes cool during the summer. Chinese bamboo blinds were expertly crafted, not haphazardly thrown together.

Korean Bamboo

It’s been said that bamboo blinds became a symbol for the powerful in ancient Korea. This symbol came from one ruler who couldn’t rule without the help of wife. Because of that, he concealed her behind bamboo blinds while she gave him wise advice to make him a great, powerful leader.

Venetian Blinds

It’s argued that Venetian blinds actually didn’t come from Venice originally. They’re believed to have come from Persia, by way of Venice. Just like with all other ancient window blinds, they started as providing privacy and another barrier against nature. Then, they morphed into something more aesthetically pleasing and stylish. In J.L. Gerome Ferris’ 1787 painting called, “The Visit of Paul Jones to the Constitutional Convention,” you can actually see wooden venetian blinds on the top window.

Modern window blinds have come a long way, both in style and functionality, but their history is rich. It will be exciting to see how window blinds improve and morph as years and generations pass.
