If you're looking for home decorating inspiration, then you need to know more about Holly Mathis. She is a fabulous decorator and stylist, and she has been featured in Better Homes & Garden, HGTV.com, and Good Housekeeping - and that's just a few of them. Just one look at her website, Holly Mathis Interiors, and you'll see clean, timeless, inspiring designs.

To find out a little more about her and her style, she was kind enough to let me ask her a few questions.

1. How would you describe your design aesthetic?

My design look is best described as fresh farmhouse or fresh cottage. I like to use some antiques and vintage but keep it fresh and simple and not too cluttered.

2. What was your favorite project? Why?

Photo Credit: Holly Mathis Interiors. Photo taken by Becki Griffin from Curious Details

...I love the Tropical Isle Blind in bamboo tortoise; it's my fave!  I have used it in my house, which I blogged here. I also used a lot of your product in the Stinson home, which was a really popular blog post for me, and this may be in BHG eventually.

3. What's your favorite trend right now?

My favorite trend continues to be white kitchens and subway tile...I can't get enough!

Father's Day Gift Guide - Think Outside the Box

by Charlene 10 Jun 2014

Father's Day is a time to celebrate, honor, and thank all those father figures in our lives. It isn't always easy being a father, and it's time to think of those men and fathers who have made a difference in our lives. One way to show that love and appreciation is through a thoughtful gift.

Not sure what to get the fathers in your life? It might be time to think outside the ordinary. It's time to leave those ties, wallets, and tools on the shelves. This Father's Day is all about comfort, convenience, and style.

1 - Give the Gift of Undisturbed TV Time

Do the fathers in your life like to kick back, relax, and watch TV every once in a while? If there's a window in the TV or even computer room, solar shades are a must. Solar shades get rid of the glare on the screen, so your father can enjoy his favorite movie or television show even more, without that annoying glare. And you don't even have to choose a blackout option to get the best viewing experience. Depending on the solar shade you choose, your father can still retain the view to the outside and let natural light filter through.

2 - Give the Gift of a Better Night's Sleep

If your father prefers sleeping in near-complete darkness and wakes up at the first glimmer of light coming through the window, then blackout window shades are the perfect gift. A well-rested dad means a happy dad.

3 - Give the Gift of Saving Money on Energy Costs

Energy costs in the summer can be brutal. Instead of letting your father sweat it out this summer as he tries to keep money in his pocket, upgrade his current window coverings to honeycomb shades. With their cell construction, honeycomb shades add another layer of insulation, keeping the heat out. A cool, comfortable home is now within reach, and all within budget. What father wouldn't love that?

4 - Give the Gift of Modern Convenience

Have you ever sat down but forgot to adjust the window coverings? Maybe the light is shining right in your eyes or you have high windows in your home and you can't manually adjust them. Chances are the fathers in your life have experienced it, too. So why not give the gift of modern convenience with motorized blinds and shades? Controlled with a remote, your father could tilt or even open or close the blinds without ever leaving the couch. Talk about convenient.

5 - Give the Gift of Team Loyalty

Whether your father, your husband, or your father-in-law loves baseball, football, or basketball, you can find sports bedding to match. Nothing says team loyalty than having a team-inspired space, whether it's the bedroom or the man cave.

See? Buying unique gifts for your father isn't hard at all. As much as he loves the ties you buy him, maybe it's time to get creative and give him a gift that he can enjoy for many years to come.

Creating a Glamorous Living Room

by Charlene 27 May 2014

Who doesn't love a touch of glamour in their lives? You may not want to live in a glamorous home. After all, there are times for some glamour and there are times for just relaxing and kicking your feet up. So instead of making your whole home glamorous, just focus on your living room. The living room is traditionally the room to receive visitors, so it's a natural choice to live out your dreams of glamour and grandeur.

Here's how to get started:

Pick the Right Color Palette

The easiest way to create a specific mood or feel in a space is by the color palette. To create that glamorous feel, you can choose whites, pale pastels, rich, deep colors, or bright jewel tones. The colors by themselves won't give you pure glamour. It's what you do with the color that makes the real difference.

Add Drama with Furniture

Adding visual interest and drama with your furniture is the perfect addition to a glamorous living room. Add a tufted accent piece or choose a piece with dramatic, extravagant lines. Remember that including an extravagant piece doesn't mean your living room will look over-the-top. With the right balance, glamorous can also be elegant.

Make a Statement

Whether it's a piece of beautiful artwork or it's your area rug, a glamorous room must make a statement. What that statement is exactly is up to you. Don't be afraid to be bold. One quick way to make a statement is by choosing the right window coverings. Roman shades have a natural elegance and glamour, and they're so versatile, they complement every style.

Mix and Match Styles

A glamorous living room can be modern, traditional, or even Mediterranean. With that in mind, mix and match styles and even style eras to create a layered, complex, glamorous feel. Like a piece from the 1920s? Perfect! Add it alongside your favorite décor item from today. Mixing and matching styles also gives the feeling that you've worked on that space over a period of time rather than throwing it all together. And that can give it even more glamour.

A glamorous living room is right around the corner. Don't be afraid to make décor mistakes. Making mistakes is how you learn what works for your space and what doesn't. And the great thing about home décor and even wall paint is it's all easily changed, no commitment necessary.

Benefits of Motorized Window Shades

by Charlene 16 May 2014

Have you ever considered upgrading to motorized window shades? It might be time that you did. Choosing motorization means choosing modern convenience. It actually can make your life easier. Still on the fence about motorization? Here's what you need to know about motorized window shades.

Perfect for High Windows

Do you have high windows that you can't reach? Motorized window shades are perfect for out-of-reach windows, allowing you to still have control over light. Because motorized window coverings are controlled by a remote, you can control it from where it's convenient for you, whether it's on the couch or from your bed.

Ideal for Those with Mobility Restrictions

Motorized window shades are great for the elderly or those with mobility restrictions. Instead of being forced to leave window coverings open or closed, you can now have more independence and decide for yourself when you want natural light and when you want privacy.

Adds Convenience

With motorized window shades, you can lift and lower them all at the same time. Click here to watch motorized shades in action from one of our happy customers! It's much more convenient to lift them all at the same time rather than going to each window separately. Your time is valuable. Why not make the most of it?

Path to Home Automation

Are you curious about the path to home automation? Motorized window coverings are a part of that process. You could eventually set up the window coverings to work on a smart home system, automating everything from turning on your lights before you get home to locking your front door after you leave the house.

Motorized window blinds are easy to use, convenient, and a modern option for any home. Simplify your life. You deserve it.

Creating a Comfortable, Safe Space for Fido

by Charlene 13 May 2014

Your dog is a beloved part of your family. That means he should have a comfortable, safe place to live, too. Decorating for Fido is a great project for the entire family, and it's a great opportunity to teach your children how to keep their dog safe while at home.

But first, take a look at this extravagant dog space.

If you don't have an entire room set aside for your dog, that's OK. You don't need that to keep your dog comfortable, happy, and protected. Here's what you do need:

A Dedicated Space

Every member of your family enjoys having a space to call his own. Your dog is the same. Again, it doesn't have to be an entire room. A little corner will do the trick. Have an unused space under the stairs or an awkward space in the hallway? That can be the perfect doggy nook. Having a dedicated space also helps keep the doggy supplies concentrated, hopefully cutting down the mess and the clutter in your house.

Cordless Window Coverings

Even if there aren't windows near your dog's dedicated space, it's important to be aware of the dangers of corded window coverings for pets. Cordless window coverings are the safest choice for both children and pets, but if you can't upgrade to cordless, you can simply use cord cleats to tie up the dangling cord. Dogs are curious. They love to play and explore. Make sure they're safe, no matter what they're doing.

A Soft Place to Rest

Your dog should have a pillow, bed, or a blanket to sleep on. Give your dog every reason to get cozy and relax once in a while. Once he claims and recognizes that soft place as his own, you'll probably find him there quite often.

Keep Things out of Reach

Have some things you don't want your pet getting into? The simple solution is to put everything up high. Sure, it can be cute to decorate Fido's area with figurines or even low-hanging pictures, but chances are he'll eventually figure out a way to get it, play with it, and destroy it, not to mention the damage it could do to him.

These are all basic suggestions, but they're important. If you're not already doing these, it's time to create an even safer home environment for Fido. What have you done for your pet to keep them safe and comfortable at home? We'd love to see some of your ideas!

The Perfect Window Coverings for Summer

by Charlene 9 May 2014

There are a lot of great, easy ways to prepare your home for summer. You can swap out throw pillows, change your bedding to lighter fabrics, and switching your area rugs to lighter, brighter ones. But there's another change you can make for summer that can update your home's look and even save you money. It all comes down to your window coverings. With the right choice in window coverings, you can save money each month and have a more comfortable home interior all summer long. So how do you know which window coverings are right for your home? To make the selection easier, we've broken it down for you.

Cellular Shades

Also called honeycomb shades, cellular shades add another layer of insulation to keep the heat outside where it belongs. The honeycomb structure not only keeps the heat from coming in, but it also filters or blacks out the natural light, which only blocks out even more heat. If you don't like the idea of blacking out the majority of light, you can still have natural light and a more comfortable home. That's the beauty of cellular shades. You can have the best of both worlds.

Pleated Shades

Pleated shades give you the look of cellular shades, but with a little less insulation. If you live in a location that doesn't get too warm in the summer, these are the perfect option. They still provide insulation, so don't feel as though you're missing out by choosing pleated shades. They look great and they serve their purpose.

Solar Shades

One of the many benefits of solar shades during the summer is that you can still have your view outside, even with your shades drawn. It also blocks harmful UV rays and it will protect your furniture from sun damage and unnecessary fading. Or, you always have the option to choose blackout solar shades, which would be perfect in bedrooms and media rooms.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice style for summer functionality. And now you don't have to. Stay cool, comfortable, and stylish this summer.

How to Keep Cool This Summer

by Charlene 2 May 2014

Summer is on its way, and for some, it's already here. So now is the time to prepare to keep cool this summer. Control the heat before it amplifies to stay cool for the entire summer. The first thing to start with is the interior of your home. After that, move to the outside. You'll eventually have a summer-ready home where you can keep cool and enjoy spending time with your loved ones. Here's how to get started:

Cover Your Windows

A home with open, bright windows can make for a beautiful space. However, even with new windows, outside heat can come in, heating up your house and increasing your energy bills. But to get the best heat reduction, you can't cover your windows with just anything. For optimal energy efficiency, choose cellular shades. If you still want that natural light during the summer, choose light filtering cell shades, and you'll have the best of both worlds.

Keep Your Lights Off

With light filtering shades, you can keep off your lights longer, helping to keep your home's interior cool and comfortable. You may not realize it at first, but leaving your lights on during the day can really heat up your home. Plus, keeping your lights off as long as possible will also save you money each month on your utility costs.

Swap Out Your Bedding

Change out your heavier winter bedding with linens specifically made for warmer weather. Being the right temperature while you sleep will help you to feel cooler the rest of the day. If you're overheated at night, you may feel as though you're catching up to stay cool all day.

Use Outside Misting Systems

Don't let the summer heat keep you from enjoying time outside. Install misting systems around your porch, deck, or backyard sitting area. It will keep you cool and you don't have to hide from the heat inside your house.

Barbeque

Cook outside as much as you can during the summer. Using your oven and stove will heat up your house, and it might be difficult to cool it back down right away. Instead, keep the heat outside where it belongs.

What's your favorite way to stay cool in the summer?

7 Stylish Alternatives to a Traditional Headboard

by Charlene 22 Apr 2014

Traditional headboards are beautiful. But not everyone is the traditional headboard type of person. If you're looking for something new, unique, and fun behind your bed, it's all about getting creative and thinking outside of the box. If you need a little inspiration, take a look at this list. You may not be able to choose just one alternative, and it just might inspire you to buy more beds.

Oversized Art

This will give you a nice balance between your new artistic headboard and the size of your bed. This is also a great way to express yourself and show your personality. Pick your favorite piece of art. If you can't find one big enough, you can always choose two large pieces of art and use those to replace your traditional headboard.

Art or Frame Collage

Want something on a smaller scale? Use smaller pieces of art and empty frames to create your own pattern and design. Add colors and your favorite photos to make the wall space your own. One thing is for sure; no one else will have the exact same design.

Wall Decal

If you can't paint or make holes in the walls, you can still have an awesome design for your headboard. Use a decal. This can be easily put up and taken down. Choose any design you want or create your own. When it comes to decals, you have a lot of options.

Chalkboard Paint

Simply use chalkboard paint behind your bed and you can draw a new headboard design every night. If you are the type who likes change, this is the perfect non-traditional headboard for you. Imagine what you can draw and what colors you could use. Your options really are limitless.

Fences, Gates, and Doors

Add an antique gate for a one-of-a-kind look or look for something more modern to give your space that much-needed flair. It's also a great way to add an interesting detail to your bedroom, a detail that is sure to spark great conversation.

Large Mirrors

Adding a large mirror behind your bed can make your room brighter, lighter, and appear bigger. It can also give your room a luxurious, elegant feel. If done right, a large mirror instead of a traditional headboard can be the statement piece you're looking for.

Window Shades or Curtains

Looking for a more affordable, simple option? Install window shades  or curtains behind your bed. You don't even have to have actual windows. Choose from silky roman shades to roller shades with modern, fun, vibrant prints. With so many options, you will find something that matches your style perfectly.

No longer do you need a traditional headboard to show sophistication and class. You can still have all of that without having to stay within the lines. Don't be afraid to get creative and to try something new. You will never know if it works for your space unless you give it a chance.

Using Pastels in Your Home Decor

by Charlene 15 Apr 2014

When you think of pastels, you probably think of Easter. And with Easter just around the corner, perhaps it's time to incorporate a few more pastels into your home décor. But pastels aren't just for Easter. They're not even just for spring. You can use pastels all year long. But if you want to start small, here are a few ways to use pastels in your home.

Pastel Planters

One easy way to introduce pastels is to paint your planters. If you feel the colors are too much, you can easily repaint them or move them to a more appropriate location, even if that means outside. Planters can be very affordable, so choosing pastel planters will keep you on budget, all while experimenting with color.

Pastel Window Coverings

Did you know that you can find pastel window coverings? And paired with a modern, clean style, they can look fabulous! At first thought, you may consider pastel window blinds and shades a little too much, design-wise, but it can actually work very well. This is one of the best ways to make a statement and create a unique look.

Pastel Furniture

Photo Credit: The Home Style Directory

This doesn't mean you have to have an entirely pastel blue couch, although that could be fantastic. Paint a wooden chair a pastel cover or create a pastel slipcover for your loveseat. Sometimes just a subtle hint of pastel can make all the difference.

Pastel Walls

Whether you decide an accent wall is more your style or you want to immerse yourself in pastel, painting your walls a pastel color can give you the oomph your space needs. Pair it with whites and grays in the rest of the room for balance. Or, if you're feeling extra brave, go for a monochromatic look.

Pastel Bedding

If you're looking to spice up your bedroom a bit, find pastel bedding. The great thing about bedding is that you can switch it out whenever you want a different look. This is a less permanent way to decorate, so it's perfect if you change your mind often or you just want to experiment with pastels a bit before moving forward with pastels in other rooms.

Easter is the perfect time to use pastels. And if you like it, you can find new ways to use it all throughout the year. What are your favorite places in your home to use pastels?

Safe Kids Day Event Photos

by Charlene 8 Apr 2014

We've teamed up with Safe Kids Day and Safe Kids Worldwide to promote child safety. It doesn't take much to make your home child-safe, and it can start with your corded window coverings.

Well-known designer, Carriann Johnson, was our spokesperson for the Safe Kids Day event in Los Angeles. She talked about general child safety, and even discussed our no-cost cord cleat program. Cord cleats allow you to wrap up dangling and dangerous window covering cords, keeping them out of the hands of little ones. Cordless window coverings are the safest choice, but if you do have corded blinds and you can't upgrade to cordless right now, you can use cord cleats to make your home safer.

Do you need cord cleats? We'll send them to you for free. Simply fill out this form. Every life is precious, and we are doing what we can to protect children everywhere. To read even more about our free cord cleat program, read this press release.

7 Spring Cleaning Tips

by Charlene 28 Mar 2014

Whether you love it or you hate it, it's time for some spring cleaning. Every home needs a good deep clean once in a while. But just the thought of deep cleaning your entire house can be overwhelming and stressful. It doesn't have to be, not if you approach it with the right mindset.

Here are the essential spring cleaning tips you'll need to tackle the deep cleaning beast:

1. Organize your closets first.

Closets can be a big project. But it can also be therapeutic to sort through your clothes and shoes, donating the items you don't use anymore. A cleaned, organized, streamlined closet is beautiful, and it just might give you the energy and motivation you need to continue your spring cleaning efforts.

2. Wipe down your walls and baseboards.

You may not notice the gradual dirt or fingerprints that appear on your walls and baseboards. But once you wipe them down with a clean, wet rag, you'll wonder how you didn't notice before. Cleaning your walls is a small task with huge results. Clean walls alone can make your home appear brighter and happier. Give it a try. You'll be pleased with the results.

3. Reorganize your bookshelves or movie shelves.

These won't need much cleaning, but reordering and reorganizing them can give your home a cleaner, tidier look and feel. It also wouldn't hurt to dust while you're at it. Before you know it, you'll be done and moving on to the next task.

4. Clean light fixtures.

You may not notice them as much, but your light fixtures will get just as dusty. Safely climb a ladder or stand on a sturdy chair and wipe them down, light bulbs and all. Then, once you're done, turn on the lights and see how much brighter your home is.

5. Don't forget the outside of your home.

Wash your doormats, sweep and wash your walkways and driveway, and do all that yard work you've been forgetting about. And don't forget to wash the outside of your windows, too. Make the outside of your home just as sparkling as the inside of your home.

6. Dust your window coverings.

Did You Tune in to the "American Dream Builders" Premiere?

by Charlene 26 Mar 2014

Did you watch NBC's new competition show, "American Dream Builders" on Sunday?

Read this if you need a little background on how the show works.

Right out of the gate, the competition heated up. Even designers on the same team were throwing each other under the bus and trying to make each room fit their individual design aesthetic rather than having a unified front.

This week's challenge was to renovate and redecorate two Tudor-style homes that were on the same street. They were supposed to keep the home's décor true to the architectural integrity and style of the home, creating a complete, cohesive look and feel.

But the Tudor-style home wasn't the only common thread between the two houses. Both families in those homes didn't have enough space for everyone living there. In one home, 3 generations were living under one roof-the grandparents, parents, and the children. In the other home lived a family of seven, all of whom shared one small bathroom. It was time to restore the beauty of their homes and create that much-needed space.

Both homes turned out beautifully, even though both had a few minor issues, like turning a hallway into an awkward nook in one home and creating unusable and unfinished storage space in a cramped bathroom in the other home. But the three designer judges weren't the only ones to provide their feedback and make the final decision. The neighborhood joined the judges by doing walk-throughs of both houses and marking their official votes, indicating which team did the best work and stayed true to the Tudor architecture and style.

The judges and the community decided the winner, and the losing team had to send someone home. Tarrick, the site manager for the blue team, ended up going home. Ultimately, his unfinished work on the bathroom vanity was the cause.

What did you think of the show? Did you agree with Tarrick going home?

Don't forget to tune in Sunday to watch the second episode!

How to Clean Your Window Shades

by Charlene 21 Mar 2014

We've already discussed cleaning your window blinds, so now it's time to tackle cleaning your window shades. At first you may think you can use the same techniques as cleaning wood or faux wood blinds, but there are specific ways to clean specific types of shades, including honeycomb, solar, and even bamboo shades. Using the incorrect cleaning method can actually damage your shades, so here's what you need to know:

Honeycomb/Cellular Shades

Regular cleaning of your cellular shades is important. Without it, they can develop a yellowish tint. Regularly vacuum the shades with the brush attachment. Make sure to be gentle and not tug on the shades. You want to keep the honeycombs looking nice. You can also dust the shades to keep the dust from accumulating. If you see that dust has gotten into the middle of the cells, use a blow dryer to get it out. But only use it on the softest, lowest air flow and only use cool air, never warm or hot. The most important thing to remember is be gentle.

Solar Shades

Many of the solar shades we offer here at Select Blinds are resistant to both mold and moisture. So that means you can use a damp cloth to clean them, both the front and the back, and you won't have any problems. You can also use a feather duster or a brush attachment on your vacuum, but a damp cloth will be your best, most effective bet for solar shades.

Bamboo Shades

No water should be used on bamboo or woven shades at all. This will cause ample irreversible damage. Instead, limit yourself to a light dusting or very light vacuuming with the brush attachment. Too much pressure or moisture on the bamboo shades can break the natural fibers apart, eventually causing droops and gaps.

Roman Shades

Because roman shades are made of fabric, it's generally OK to spot clean using a damp rag and gentle detergent or soap. However, be mindful of the type of fabric of your roman shades, like those made of silk or other delicate materials. You can also use a duster and the brush vacuum attachment for a light cleaning.

Keeping your window shades clean and looking fresh is easy. With the right cleaning technique, you'll be able to maintain that new look you had when you first installed them. It will also prolong the life of your shades, so you'll get the most use for your money, all while keeping your shades looking great!

How to Clean Your Blinds

by Charlene 19 Mar 2014

Remember when you first installed your blinds and they looked fabulous and clean? Unfortunately, it doesn't take too long for blinds to collect dust. But cleaning your blinds can be a pain, especially if you're not sure you're using the proper cleaning method. After all, blinds are made from a variety of materials and each requires a unique way of cleaning. But it doesn't have to be a pain any longer. Here's what you need to know:

Wood Blinds

Even though wood blinds have been treated and sealed, using water on them is still not a good idea. Avoid cleaning wood blinds with water or even a spray cleaner. All your wood blinds need is a little dusting. Use a feather duster, dusting mitt, or a clean rag. Simply run the rag or duster across each slat, starting from the lowest slat to the highest. This will help you avoid pushing the dust onto the already-cleaned slats below.

If you want to take it one step further, you can always clean your wood blinds with a vacuum with a brush attachment. This will give you a deeper clean and it won't leave the dust you've pushed off the blinds on the floor or windowsill.

Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood is more durable than real wood when it comes to using water. With faux wood blinds, you can use a warm, damp cloth to clean the individual slats. If you'd like to add a miniscule amount of soap or detergent to the mixture, you can do that, too. But never use an abrasive sponge or cleaning tool. This can scratch the faux wood and cause damage, eventually letting the water into the core of the slats.

Just as with wood blinds, you can also use your vacuum's brush attachment to clean your faux wood blinds. Take it one slat at a time and you'll be done in no time.

Aluminum Mini Blinds

These are some of the most durable blinds out there and they're some of the easiest to clean. You can use both warm and cold water to clean them, and feel free to use soap. Because of the smooth finish of aluminum mini blinds, the dust should wipe off easily. However, if you need more cleaning power, you can take the aluminum blinds off the headrail and soak them in the bathtub. This is a sure-fire way to get your mini blinds sparkling again. However, as you're cleaning, try not to bend the slats. You'll want to avoid causing any damage to the blinds as you're cleaning them, no matter how minor it may seem at the time.

Fabric Blinds

Because fabric blinds aren't as firm as aluminum or even faux wood or wood blinds, they can be a little difficult to clean. First, try to clean them with the brush attachment on your vacuum. This may be all you need to get them clean. However, if that doesn't work as well as you had hoped, you can always take them to the dry cleaners. You won't need to do this every time you clean your fabric or cloth vertical blinds, but it's nice to know it's always an option.

Cleaning your blinds doesn't have to be a hassle. With the right knowledge and tools, you can tackle an average cleaning day or more in-depth spring cleaning.
